j3p0: that's not really what ltsp does

the client devices either PXE boot, or run a customized linux that connects to LTSP. you just want rdp or vnc, which ltsp doesn't directly do

<ltsp>
question: if you have a question about ltsp, please go ahead and ask it, and people will respond if they can. please also mention the linux distro and release you're using. :)
16:19
<marung>
I am running Centos 5.9 and can PXE with the current computers in my lab, but any other computer I try to set up for PXE on the server Kernel panics at automatic network detection on five different computers/NIC cards.
16:20
external DHCP, receives IP address and loads from ltsp server up to NIC detection.
16:21
<vagrantc>
is it on the same network as the other computers?
16:21
i.e. it's using the same network card
16:21
<marung>
Yes, it is set up on its own VLAN
16:21
<vagrantc>
maybe firewalling?
16:21
<marung>
All disabled
16:22
<vagrantc>
is there a router on the same network that might also be running DHCP?
16:23
<marung>
No, the district only has one DHCP. IP range from 144.0 to 152.250, so plenty of addresses available.
16:24
<vagrantc>
are you using dnsmasq with proxydhcp, then? or is the LTSP server handing out DHCP?
16:24
<marung>
Currently works great with the thin client (old laptops) computers I am using.
16:25
<vagrantc>
marung: just to be clear, the computer downloads the kernel and initrd via tftp, and then fails once it makes a second DHCP request?
16:26
<marung>
DHCP not on LTSP server, Client receives IP, Then starts TFTP.
16:26
<vagrantc>
so you are using proxydhcp, maybe with dnsmasq?
16:27
<marung>
I am not sure. I will have to check on that.

or is the district's server configured to tell your thin clients what to boot LTSP from your server?
16:29
<marung>
The DHCP is pointed to the right TFTP, the existing clients boot fine.

16:30
<marung>
Yes. connected to same network.
16:30
<vagrantc>
marung: without knowing how your DHCP is configured, it makes it rather hard to troubleshoot. hard enough that i don't even know CentOS
16:30
marung: what's the point of the vlan, then?
16:31
<marung>
set up so only one room/lab can PXE.
16:31
<vagrantc>
marung: did you have to do any manual configuration to get your other thin clients to boot?
16:31
i don't see how it can be on a separate vlan, but the same network, and only allow some machines to PXE boot...
16:31
<marung>
No, It has always been plug n play until now.

<vagrantc>
marung: on the district server, or with some other service you've set up?
16:50
i don't know linuxrc, don't use CentOS, but this sounds like you're getting two different DHCP responses... one at PXE time, and then a second from the initrd/initramfs phase, and one of them isn't giving you the correct information
16:50
<marung>
Not sure the question. The LTSP Centos server kernel panics when it reaches linuxrc.
16:50
<vagrantc>
marung: the server kenel panics, or the thin client?
16:53
<marung>
thin clients does
16:56
<vagrantc>
marung: can you get a laptop or other computer to at least get networking information on the networks that are having problems?
16:56
s,networks,subnets, ?
16:57
<marung>
Yes. There are 35 computers in my room that do connect successfully to the ltsp server. If I unplug the cat5 from one and plug in the computers they want to upgrade me to, it kernel panics.
16:59
the thin client computer kernel panics...
16:59
<vagrantc>
so on the exact same network and subnet, with different hardware, you're getting kernel panics...
16:59
<marung>
Yes. that is correct.
17:00
<vagrantc>
but multiple different new hardware all fail
17:00
<marung>
I have since tried with five different NIC cards / brands, all kernel panic.

<alkisg>
bcdonadio: what do you mean "fully featured"? Which distro, version, and what are you missing from it?
19:16
<other_other_joe>
I'd hate to see a less featured busybox :)
19:19
<bcdonadio>
alkisg, I'm booting from a ubuntu-generated initramfs on a thinclient, but it is not booting, so I'm trying to debug it, buuuuuut the busybox on that image doesn't even have "less" bundled, so I'm having a little bit of a headache to read my dmesg...
19:19
<other_other_joe>
more should be there
19:20
"more" that is
19:23
<bcdonadio>
more isn't working :\
19:23
<alkisg>
bcdonadio: one easy way is to download it from the server while still on the initramfs,
19:24
python -m SimpleHTTPServer on the server, and wget on the client,
19:24
but, what's your actual problem?
19:25
<bcdonadio>
alksig, I'm not able to mount the NBD image, and I receive this error: "block ndb0: attempted send on closed socket"
19:25
<alkisg>
Which ubuntu version?
19:25
<bcdonadio>
saucy
19:25
<alkisg>
i386?
19:25
<bcdonadio>
i386 client, amd64 server
19:26
<alkisg>
Can you pastebin stuff from the server?
19:26
<bcdonadio>
also: "mount: mounting /dev/nbd0 on /root failed: Invalid argument"
19:26
<alkisg>
grep -rv '^#' /etc/nbd*
19:26
<bcdonadio>
yes, sure
19:26
<alkisg>
grep nbd /var/log/syslog
19:26
sudo netstat -nap|grep nbd
19:30
<bcdonadio>
http://pastebin.com/VvcUeR3B
19:30
<alkisg>
Seems good, another one: ls -lh /opt/ltsp/images
19:31
And, verify that this doesn't exist: /etc/ltsp/nbd-server.allow
19:31
<bcdonadio>
http://pastebin.com/mWf9LKcW
19:32
/etc/ltsp/nbd-server.allow doesn't exist
19:32
<alkisg>
OK, now client site:
19:32
!nbd-client
19:32
<ltsp>
nbd-client: To try mounting the NBD image from the client initramfs: nbd-client 192.168.67.1 -N /opt/ltsp/i386 /dev/nbd0
19:32
<alkisg>
...not exactly though,
19:32
Ah ok saucy, so just change the IP
19:33
*client side, I meant
19:33
<bcdonadio>
Negotiation: ..size = 325MB\nbs=1024, sz=341176320 bytes
19:34
apparently, it worked
19:34
<alkisg>
So your dhcpd setup has issues
19:34
cat /proc/cmdline on the client, and pastebin your server's dhcpd.conf
19:36
<bcdonadio>
ro initrd=intird.img-3.11....blahblahblah init=/sbin/init-ltsp quiet splash plymouth:force-splash vt.handoff=7 root=/dev/nbd0 BOOT_IMAGE=vmlinuz-3.11....blabhblabh BOOTIF=blahmymacblah
19:36
s/blah/actual information/g :P

19:37
<alkisg>
On the client again, ipconfig -n eth0
19:37
Check the rootserver there, is that your dhcp server?
19:38
*ltsp server?

<bcdonadio>
weeeee, indeed, it was a problem with the dhcp.conf!
19:40
im running two different ltsp installations, and I didn't override the root-path for this client
19:40* alkisg notes that the busybox wouldn't help very much there :)
19:41
<bcdonadio>
thank you, alkisg ^^

<digitalirony>
so, im seeing this issue on our 12.04 ltsp, where our users can't open evince
22:50
its giving an error about no supported authenticaion protocols
22:51
(evince:20545): EggSMClient-WARNING **: Failed to connect to the session manager: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
22:51
like that
22:52
I found a link suggesting setting the homedir prefix in apparmor
22:52
but it didn't seem to have any effect
22:53
and if I do it remotely with ssh -X, I get that it rejected the connection from X11 because of wrong authentication
22:59
nvm
