<krotaz>
hey guys do yo know wich is the minimum system requirement in the client??
00:25
<sbalneav>
Much below 350 mhz and things get slower
00:25
32 megabytes memory
00:25
pci network and video card
00:27
<krotaz>
so a pentium 166 will be a tutle???
00:27
turtle
00:27
<sbalneav>
It'll be a bit slow.
00:27
<krotaz>
ok
00:27
<sbalneav>
Depends on what you're doing
00:27
<krotaz>
openoffice mp3, web
00:27
<sbalneav>
If it's mainly typing in a word processor, it may be fine.
00:27
<krotaz>
that kind of stuff
00:28
<sbalneav>
Web scrolling will be a little pokey
00:28
but not too bad.
00:28
<krotaz>
programming??? lets say c++ java under eclipse??
00:28
<sbalneav>
Not familiar with any ide's
00:29
I'd suspect they'd be close to a wordprocessor.
00:29
<krotaz>
yes
00:30
<sbalneav>
I guess the thing to do would be to try it and see.
00:30
If you've got a slow processor, though, make sure you've got more ram
00:30
if you've got a slow processor, AND you're doing network swapping, that's going to kill you
00:31
<krotaz>
ok
00:32
by network swaping you mean network traffic???
00:34
<sbalneav>
Swapping over the network
00:35
if you havent got enough ram, you normally swap memory onto a hard disk
00:35
you dont have one on a thin client, so you swap to the network.
00:35
<krotaz>
ok
00:36
so a good combination wil be a 300 mhz pc with 128 or 256 ram
00:36
<sbalneav>
sure
00:36
<krotaz>
cool

JonNoob, where you specify it in your dhcp config.
03:52
<JonNoob>
but is that /opt/ltsp/i386 ?
03:53
it is specified as /ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0 under filename, but there is no directory called ltsp in the root

JonNoob, no. it's usualy in your tftpboot area /var/lib/tftpboot or /tftpboot is common.

<JonNoob>
ok
03:54
<sep>
JonNoob, try looking in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/
03:55
<JonNoob>
found it :-)

Does anybody know how /etc/exports should look like?

usualy something like /opt/ltsp/i386 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0(ro,async,no_root_squash) or something
04:15
replace ip with your configl
04:15
<JonNoob>
mine did't have i386 in the end of the path
04:15
and insterad of ip there was an *
04:17

Hola a todos desde España
04:31
Hello all from Spain
04:45
<JonNoob>
Help!!! I really need help before i start crying :'( I installed edubuntu Feisty amd64, ran ltsp-build-client --arch=i386,
04:46
edited dhcpd.conf to fit my network (172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0)
04:46
Integrated logind with my win2003 AD
04:47
But my thin clients won't boot. They get initram, but when the need to do the nfs mount they failes with the messages rpc failed: 2
04:49
<Envit1>
is the fs correctly exported?
04:50
paste here the /etc/exports line about it
04:50
<floppy1234>
can someone help me to solve my problem?
04:51
<Envit1>
floppy1234: try :)
04:51
<floppy1234>
;)
04:52
this is my problem:
04:52
http://paste.debian.net/34198 here is the scanimage -L and a nmap -sS
04:52
and scanimage -L on the terminal's shell has found the scanner

right
04:54
<ltsppbot>
"JonNoob" pasted "/etc/exports FULL" (17 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/264
04:56
<floppy1234>
Envit1 what can this be?
04:56
<Envit1>
JonNoob: give me an "ls" of your /opt please
04:56
floppy1234: it is normal that the server does not detect a scanner that it DOESN'T have
04:57
<JonNoob>
there is only ltsp in /opt
04:57
<Envit1>
scanimage -L detects local scanners
04:57
or maybe network scanners
04:57
but does not detect scanners connected to other computers
04:57
<floppy1234>
xsane says also there is no scanner
04:57
<Envit1>
xsane uses scanimage so don't mind
04:58
JonNoob: try mounting /opt/ltsp from a full box other than the server itself, e.g. a laptop
04:58
<floppy1234>
i think, the terminal should have open more ports than only the X port
04:58
okay
04:58
<JonNoob>
How do i try that???
04:59
<Envit1>
JonNoob: do you have another computer in the network besides the server?
04:59
<JonNoob>
sure. But what is the command?
04:59
<Envit1>
mount -t nfs 172.x.x.x:/opt/ltsp /mnt (more or less)
05:00
<JonNoob>
ok... Going away to test for a while....
05:00
<Envit1>
floppy1234: maybe. it depends on running services
05:00
16001 for esd
05:00
22 for ssh
05:00
but it all depends on configured services in lts.conf
05:01
AFAIK
05:01
<floppy1234>
moment pleae
05:01
please
05:02
http://paste.debian.net/34201
05:02
;)
05:02
201 is the connected terminal
05:05
<Envit1>
sorry I can't help more, I do not know about XINETD_SERVICES
05:07
besides that, i didn't see anything about opening a different port than X port
05:11
<JonNoob>
Envit1 tried mounting from another independent box. No problems at all
05:15
<Envit1>
JonNoob: are you sure that the box in which you mounted is using the same IP than one of the thin clients?
05:16
<floppy1234>
Envit1 okay
05:16
now it runs
05:16
<JonNoob>
do you mean what ip the independent box have? or do you mean if the thin client is using the same command?
05:16
<floppy1234>
i wrote the saned row into default and comment the seperate machine
05:18
<Envit1>
JonNoob: I mean that you need to check which IP does the thin client have, and which IP does the independent box have, and wether they match or not
05:18
floppy1234: as I said, I can't help more, it's out of my expertise terrain. I'm sorry
05:19
<JonNoob>
the thin client have 172.16.5.92, the independent have 172.16.5.XX
05:24
<Envit1>
JonNoob: ok, it seems you do not have permissions problems. A final test: check if your /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny say something particular about 172.16.5.92 or similar
05:24
<JonNoob>
ok
05:24
Nothing in those files

I was wandering if it was a mistake to choose the amd64 version of edubuntu. Maybe I should reinstall with the i386 version
05:25
What do you think?
05:26
<Envit1>
hm
05:27
maybe, but doesn't know
05:27
<JonNoob>
Just heard java and flash doesn't work on 64bit....
05:28
<Envit1>
the client receives correctly it's kernel, am I right?
05:28
<JonNoob>
yes
05:28
initram and kernel recieved correctly.
05:28
<Envit1>
and it receives correctly its ramdisk via TFTP, am I right again?
05:28
ok
05:28
well
05:29
then it seems that the problem is not in the arch
05:29
if ramdisk is ok, and the nfs disk is for 64bit
05:29
what you will see is a correct pivot-root
05:30
after the disk has been nfs-mounted
05:30
_after_
05:30
and the the client will hang, or crash, or...
05:30
start burning ;)
05:30
<JonNoob>
Just lost me... pivot-root?
05:30
<Envit1>
but your client does not receive the nfs disk
05:31
pivot-root: when the kernel changes the absolute filesystem root from the ramdisk to the "local" disk
05:31
<JonNoob>
it keeps getting the ip, rootpath, filename and so on.... and saying rpc faile: 2
05:31
ok. Thanks for explaining
05:31
<Envit1>
check the /var/log files in the server
05:32
specially the messages one
05:32
to try to find a nfs detailed error explanation
05:32
you will see (i hope) the mount requests
05:32
<JonNoob>
did try that earlier... one moment
05:33
Found somthing i didn't see before.

reboot the entire nfs/rpc system
05:43

05:43
<JonNoob>
sudo /etc/init.d/nfs-kernels-server restart?

huh
05:44

05:44
heh
05:44
it's ubuntu, right
05:44
well
05:44
no
05:44
<JonNoob>
noob :-)
05:44
<Envit1>
don't restart
05:44
stop all nfs services
05:44
nfs-kernel-server
05:44
nfs-user-server
05:44
nfs-common
05:44
<JonNoob>
ok
05:44
<Envit1>
(i think these are their names)
05:45
probably you will have only two of them: one of the servers and the common
05:46
<JonNoob>
got nfs-kernel-server and nfs-common.
05:46
They are stopped
05:46
<Envit1>
ok
05:46
check in which order are they normally started
05:46
in /etc/rc2.d
05:46
and start them again
05:47
<JonNoob>
ok
05:47
nfs-kernel-srver first and then nfs-common
05:48
done
05:48
<Envit1>
ok, taht way :)
05:48
now, tail -f /var/log/messages
05:49
and start the client
05:49
<JonNoob>
same error in messages... Before the client starts....
05:49
<Envit1>
hm
05:50
then you have some kind of nfs/rpc error not related to ltsp, I think
05:50
<JonNoob>
I think so too...
05:57
Envit1 i really appriciate all your help. But i think i have to do a reinstall and see if it does any magic. I must have f... something up.
05:58
and this time with the i386 version

it runs nicely with vesa but I supposed that I will get more performace with the proper driver
06:47
<ogra>
no
06:47
but you get things like xv support for videos etc
06:48
<BlackDark>
so hw acceleration
06:48
can use beryl or similar with that ?
06:48
<ogra>
i have one t1220 here running with the openchrome driver the speed in scrolling etc isnt significantly different to vesa

for beryl/compiz support intel is really the best option

<BlackDark>
F1 F2 del, insert doesn't work
06:50

get a client with an intel910 and you wont want to use anything else anymore :)
06:50
<BlackDark>
are there some terminals with intel video board ?
06:50

i dont think so ... sadly :/
06:50

most of the terminals are via based

but running compiz on a laptop with i910 runs better in ltsp tzhan using compiz locally ... way smoother

16:57
<Gadi>
nonsparker: disable why
16:57
<nonsparker>
I don't want the users to have to log in
16:57
<Gadi>
JonNoob: it will reformat the drive
16:57
<nonsparker>
for like a kiosk
16:57ccherret1 has joined #ltsp
16:57
<Gadi>
JonNoob: you must do this from a rescue cd
16:57ccherrett has quit IRC
16:58
<Gadi>
nonsparker: if you used ltsp-build-client --kiosk, i believe you are running local gdm
16:58
<JonNoob>
ok
16:58
<Gadi>
not ldm
16:58
JonNoob: it will hose the system
16:58
and all info when you do this
16:58
be warned
16:58
<nonsparker>
no i am using edubuntu server
16:58
<JonNoob>
that is fine. Just what i want
16:58
Thanks gadi
16:59
<Gadi>
nonsparker: if you want autologin, you can use my patch to ldm
16:59
<nonsparker>
that would be great
16:59
<Gadi>
that will allow you to have local devices and sound and such
16:59
let me find the link...
16:59
<nonsparker>
where can i find it?
17:00
thank you soooo much
17:01
<Gadi>
http://codebrowse.launchpad.net/~gideon/ltsp/gadi-ldm-mods-ltsp/download/gadi%40ltsp.org-20070521205254-ek710bofdpdtlwlz/x_Matt_Zimmerman_%3Cmatt.zimmerman%40canonical.com%3E_Tue_Jun__7_19%3A59%3A49_2005_32192.0/ldm
17:01
replace /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/sbin/ldm
17:01
then, you can either do:
17:02
LDM_USERNAME=hostname|
17:02
note the | at the end
17:02
<nonsparker>
ok
17:02
<Gadi>
and then set up users on the system that have the same username as the hostnames on the client
17:02
you will need to assign hostnames to the clients using dhcpd.conf and /etc/hosts
17:03
<nonsparker>
ok
17:03
<Gadi>
and then you can either use ssh keys instead of password or use:
17:03
LDM_PASSWORD
17:03
<nonsparker>
is there a way to use one log in for everyone?
17:03
<Gadi>
which will be very insecure and use the same password for all system users
17:03
you dont want to do that
17:04
linux apps wont work properly if you do
17:04
like firefox and others
17:04
linux really wants one user using a username at a time
17:04
<nonsparker>
all these stations are going to do is log into a web front end to Citrix
17:04
ok
17:05
I understand
17:05
<Gadi>
if that is all, you may want to just rebuild the chroot with the --kiosk option
17:05
and then install into the chroot the plugins needed
17:05
that way, all the stations will run locally
17:05
the only downside is you wont have printing
17:06
which i guess you may want
17:06
<nonsparker>
all the prinitng is handled thru Citrix
17:06
<Gadi>
but to local print queues or to network printers
17:06
<nonsparker>
network
17:07
<Gadi>
ah, in that case, you may want to experiment with this-
17:07
mv /opt/ltsp/i386 /opt/ltsp/i386-orig
17:07
sudo ltsp-build-client --kiosk
17:08
that should give you a barebones firefox running locally on each thin client kiosk
17:08
<nonsparker>
ok
17:08
<Gadi>
then, you can add plugins/java, etc to the chroot
17:08
<nonsparker>
Gadi you are the man
17:08
<Gadi>
with sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 apt-get install <pkg
17:08
<nonsparker>
Thank you very much
17:09
<Gadi>
good luck
17:09
<nonsparker>
thanks a bunch!

Gadi.. I am hopeless. I really need to get it step by step.. Sorry.... i booted the rescuecd and ran fdisk /dev/sda
17:17
<Gadi>
hit m for menu
17:17
JonNoob: if all you want to do is delete the partitions, just go through and do:
17:17
<JonNoob>
yep
17:17
<Gadi>
d
17:17
<partition number
17:17
until there are none left
17:17
then 'w'
17:17
and write the changes
17:17
<JonNoob>
ok
17:20
i think that did the trick... thanks

18:05
<nonsparker>
I followed the thinclient nat howto on the ubuntu wiki
18:05
<Gadi>
change it to the ip of the server
18:05
then, you need to nat through the server
18:05
<nonsparker>
