alkisg vagrantc: I have a very unusual situation with a lab I am working on
06:35
We are having some strange SSH issues, and only one user can log in
06:42ben-nabiy has left IRC (ben-nabiy!~ben-Nabiy@host-204-93-116-117.AMNOLT4.epbfi.com, Ping timeout: 256 seconds)

<alkisg>
ben-nabiy, good luck :)
06:44
JerryT, all of them work with ltsp-pnp, personally I'm using MATE
06:56ben-nabiy has joined IRC (ben-nabiy!~ben-Nabiy@host-204-93-116-117.AMNOLT4.epbfi.com)
07:00
<alkisg>
ben-nabiy: what issues?
07:08
<ben-nabiy>
alkisg, we have only one user which can log in, and even trying to ssh into the lab is not working unless going out and back through the router
07:08
<alkisg>
Ah, if ssh isn't working then it doesn't sound like an ltsp issue...
07:08
<ben-nabiy>
ssh works to the server from the lab network
07:08
but only for 1 user
07:09
and not for a fresh user
07:09
<alkisg>
Right, if ssh doesn't work for other users then it's not an ltsp issue
07:09
<ben-nabiy>
Updating /var/lib/tftpboot directories for chroot: fat64

cp: cannot stat '/tmp/tmp.GlPm0x0yYk/boot/.': No such file or directory

<alkisg>
Check for other error messages, like disk full etc
07:12
<ben-nabiy>
no disk full
07:12
df -H shows nothing approaching full
07:12
<alkisg>
So you run ltsp-update-image and you only see the cp error, nothing else?
07:12
<ben-nabiy>
grub errors
07:13
<alkisg>
Can't you pastebin the whole output?
07:15
<ben-nabiy>
http://pastebin.com/fvtQtxU0
07:16
as far back as I can bring up
07:16
<alkisg>
ben-nabiy: ah, you're talking about ltsp-build-client, not about ltsp-update-image
07:17
<ben-nabiy>
alkisg, yes
07:17
<alkisg>
OK, not interested in that, I'm using ltsp-pnp :)
07:17* ben-nabiy sighs
07:17
<alkisg>
It's probably going to be removed in ltsp 6
07:18
Packages have all sort of issues when ran in chroots, that's why I didn't like the method and decided to implement ltsp-pnp...
07:18
Now it might be that grub doesn't see /sys mounted
07:19
But I really don't want to invest the time to troubleshoot it :)

ok, so in a ltsp-pnp generated image, I cannot login, but I can ssh
07:44
(I have SCREEN_2=shell)
07:44
I even just created a user on the server, and that user cannot login
07:52
<alkisg>
ben-nabiy: do you have epoptes installed?
08:04
<ben-nabiy>
alkisg, yes
08:06
<alkisg>

<ltsp>
vnc-edide: To share your screen with me, open Epoptes → Help menu → Remote support → Host: srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr, and click the Connect button
08:07
<alkisg>
ben-nabiy: you can do that ^ so that I can then see the client logs etc
08:08
<ben-nabiy>
alkisg, when I can log in, I will
08:09
<alkisg>
ben-nabiy: you can't login to the server?
08:09
If not, then it's not an ltsp issue...
08:09
<ben-nabiy>
It is headless
08:10
<alkisg>
No x2go or ssh -x available for any user at all?
08:10
or vnc, whatever...
08:10
Or, from a fat client with that specific user that could login
08:11
<ben-nabiy>
got a core dump seg fault when trying to ssh -x and then run epoptes
08:11
will try x2go
08:12
<alkisg>
ben-nabiy: which client should we try to login with? the thin or the fat?
08:13
<ben-nabiy>
neither is working
08:13
except the one user logged in
08:13
I am sitting next to the fat
08:13
<alkisg>
ben-nabiy: put a username there
08:13
leave "server" as it is
08:14
<ben-nabiy>
bad choice, I just created that user to test
08:14
<alkisg>
That user cannot login because /home/bd doesn't exist
08:14
<ben-nabiy>
let me do a different one
08:14
<alkisg>
OK, another one then
08:17
ben-nabiy: I don't see any issues
08:18
The testy user logged in just fine
08:18
<ben-nabiy>
hrm, very funny
08:18
just failed the next user
08:18
<alkisg>
Let's do it the same way
08:19
ssh etc
08:19
Aren't you already logged in as bennabiy?
08:20
You shouldn't login twice with the same account in GUIs
08:20
<ben-nabiy>
I am sshed in
08:20
and with x2go
08:21
bombed
08:22
<alkisg>
Try with an account that is not logged in already
08:23
<ben-nabiy>
failed
08:27
interesting
08:30
<alkisg>
Again I don't see any issues...
08:30
bbiab
08:30
<ben-nabiy>
ok
08:32
what is causing default to not work?
08:32
<alkisg>
What is not working? The default session? Is that openbox?
08:33
<ben-nabiy>
It should be MATE
08:33
but that must be what is happening
08:33
<alkisg>
Try selecting openbox and see if it fails
08:33
<ben-nabiy>
default not pointing to anything?
08:33
ok
08:34
it booted, but had nothing more than openbox
08:35
we accidentally added it when trying to configure something
08:35
so if we remove openbox, it should default back to MATE?
08:35
<alkisg>
Try removing it and re-running ltsp-update-image
08:35
Sounds reasonable...

<steves_ksc>
Good morning. I'm a long-time LTSP administrator trying to get up and running with LTSP-PnP using fat-clients. We are using Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and have everything working, except the fat-client lock screen. When the screen locks, the password (which has been verified as correct) will not unlock it. I found a procedure that talks about disabling the lock screen, but our company policies require the screen to be locked after a period of
15:45
Is there a fix for this, or am I just SOL.

15:52
<quinox>
there is
15:53
let me find it...
15:54
2015-07-05 02:16:09 vagrantc there's a feature in recent versions of LDM where you can set LDM_HASH_PASSWORD=true in lts.conf to store a local copy
15:54
2015-07-05 02:16:41 vagrantc so screen lockers can work again ... but changing the password still needs to be done on the server
15:55
correction: it's LDM_PASSWORD_HASH
15:56
see man lts.conf:
15:56
LDM_PASSWORD_HASH
15:56
boolean, default False
15:56
When set to True, this will create a proper shadow entry on the
15:56
client, allowing for screen locking, and other things which require
15:56
authentication to work. Note, this allows you to change your
15:56
password locally, or possibly other actions such as sudo, but these
15:56
changes are only temporary and will not persist on reboot.
15:56
versions: LDM 2.2.14+, LTSP 5.5.2+
15:57
we use a different way ourselves: Since our auth is done by LDAP anyway we configure the fat clients to use the same LDAP server for authentication
15:57
with the advantage that password changes are reflected right away
15:58
<steves_ksc>
Ok thank you very much. I will give that a try.
