<html_inprogress>
hey
18:47
would this sever be a good thing for ltsp?
18:48
http://www.pcliquidations.com/p6607-chenbro-micom-rm21706-2
18:50
<vagrantc>
you'd probably want more ram, depending on how many users... and of course you'd want disks...
18:50
the processors are a little on the slow side
18:51
html_inprogress: how many users, what sort of applications?
18:51
<html_inprogress>
im a noob at servers so can you tell me
18:51
what can i do at best with this?
18:52
web sever ? hosting games? mm
18:52
ftp
18:53
http?
18:58
hello?
19:27
vagrantc, hello?
19:49
<vagrantc>
heh. sorry.
19:49
stepped out for a bit
19:51
html_inprogress: i run some multi-user setups on comprable hardware with more ram, though with lightweight desktops such as lxde
19:52
<html_inprogress>
ok, well im new to this server stuff , and this ltsp, but im willing to learn,,
19:52
so can you give me ,so noobie help?
19:53

what distro and version?

20:03
<vagrantc>
gnome is a little on the heavy side ... how many users do you intend to server with LTSP?
20:03
gnome is what ubuntu uses by default

20:11
<vagrantc>
?
20:12
<html_inprogress>
well i didnt buy it yet,cuz i need to know how much of a workload i can put on it , on a scale form 0-100
20:13
100 is max
20:13
<vagrantc>
meaningless scale
20:14
in general, need to know several things ... how many concurrant users, and what software they plan to run
20:14

100 less then >

<html_inprogress>
would fat cleint help?
20:19
<vagrantc>
fat clients would offload most of the work to the clients, yes.
20:20
but then you need clients with enough ram.
20:20
and processor
20:20
in the end, there's nothing like actually testing to see what your needs are
20:20
<html_inprogress>
so that what i need to offset the work load? u mean?
20:21
<vagrantc>
you haven't even told me if you're planning to support 1,000 users or 2
20:21
<html_inprogress>
i like to be flexable, and kinda beffy
20:21
<vagrantc>
or what application(s) they will run
20:22
<html_inprogress>
office/school type, apps
20:23
open office
20:23
tons of web/firefox
20:24
<vagrantc>
the server you mentioned might handle a few users with that sort of setup ... maybe 5 at most.
20:25
<html_inprogress>
5 users ?
20:26
<vagrantc>
it's only got two 2.4 GHz CPUs and 2GB of ram ...
20:26
that's not really any better than your average single-user desktop these days
20:27
<html_inprogress>
well im thinking of putting 80gb of ram
20:27
<vagrantc>
with fatclients, you could get a lot more out of it
20:27
you'll still need faster CPUs
20:27
<html_inprogress>
if can fit it in
20:32
so what faster?
20:32
then what i got?
20:32moldy (~rene@unaffiliated/moldy) left irc: Read error: Operation timed out
20:32moldy (~rene@unaffiliated/moldy) joined #ltsp.
20:32

20:34MorningSon (~MorningSo@cpe-70-117-27-48.satx.res.rr.com) left irc: Quit: WeeChat 0.3.0
20:35
<html_inprogress>
fat cleint, is what im going for
20:35
<vagrantc>
fat clients keep the server requirements minimal
20:35
but you'll want at least 1GB of ram in each fatclient
20:36
<html_inprogress>
so if i full upgrade , whats my user count at ?
20:36
<vagrantc>
what do you mean by upgrade?
20:36
<html_inprogress>
like the hardware
20:37
if it was fully upgraded whats my max user count ?
20:37
<vagrantc>
bah.
20:37
fully upgraded doesn't mean anything
20:37
<html_inprogress>
i hope its better then 5
20:37
really?
20:37
<vagrantc>
html_inprogress: you're just going to have to try and see.
20:38
<html_inprogress>
i dont have the money, to do so, im at a crossroads
20:38
<vagrantc>
i *estimated* 5 users with a thin client model, given the fairly low-powered server you mentioned earlier
20:38
but you say you can do fatclients ...
20:40
<html_inprogress>
yes.
20:41
<vagrantc>
how many users would you like to be able to serve?
20:41
that should be easier to answer than me trying to pull magic numbers out of thin air
20:42
<html_inprogress>
3 class rooms, 100max but a steady flow of 16,

to high?
20:42
i mean too much?
20:43
sorry im really new to this
20:43
<vagrantc>
so 100 people using fatclients at the same time?
20:43NeonLicht (~NeonLicht@darwin.ugr.es) left irc: Ping timeout: 276 seconds

<html_inprogress>
well if i can ,
20:44
<vagrantc>
i'm just trying to confirm i understand what your goal is
20:46
<html_inprogress>
yes 100 ppl is my small goal , 700 ppl is my middle goal 1200 is my BiGG gooal,,, , with fat clients
20:46
i heard of mulit-severs , so can i do this?
20:47
<vagrantc>
even with fat clients, you'll need much better hardware ... i don't know how much nicer- i don't do anything that big.
20:47
or more servers
20:48
your limitation will probably be network and disk bandwidth is my guess ...

ok lets go small then ,
20:52
<vagrantc>
i'd start with one classroom, see how that performs
20:54
in extremadura, spain, they have/had a few thousand servers, one per classroom, serving around 20-30 at a time doing thin clients ... a little more powerful servers than what you mentioned
21:00
<midasxl42>
Hello, i'm using LTSP in edubuntu 10.4 and when i start up the thin station it connects but i get no login screen. all i get it a white screen and a mouse pointer.I get a ltsp 20 with the clients ip address but nothing else.. can anyone help me with this.. Thanks

:D

Good morning everyone. :)
22:46
<alkisg>
vagrantc: the downside is that it adds "boot from network" entries even if the sysadmin there only wants ipxe.iso
22:46
Hi muppis
22:46
vagrantc: e.g. on an LTSP server, the sysadmin might want ipxe.iso but not "boot from network" for his server
22:47
But np, personally I don't mind :D
