Everytime I close the program any groups I have made disappear

Any pointers would be appreciated, I'm using Edubuntu 14.04 with LTSP with 4 fat clients and I want to be able to Wake On LAN

<quinox>
Running with a fat client, and I can't figure out where the (gtk?) printing dialogue gets its printers from
16:09
it's doesn't seem to be from the locally running CUPS, since that one has diff. printers
16:09
nor it's the server's CUPS, again because it has diff. printers
16:09* quinox is puzzled
16:12
<quinox>
I'm printing from inside chrome and libreoffice - my WM is awesome

no hurry
17:08
it might not even be LTSP but just general Linux weirdness - my knowledge of the whole printer setup is sorely lacking

<lauri>
Hi guys
17:16
could anyone elaborate why aufs/overlayfs was introduced?
17:16
wasn't tmpfs enough?
17:16
<vsuojanen>
quinox: meanwhile i could try "When users login from LDM session the init scripts check first is the cups installed in chroot and after that sets up CUPS_SERVER (default from LDM_SERVER)". i don't know if this helps clarifying. just snipp my experience
17:22khildin has left IRC (khildin!~khildin@ip-83-134-135-112.dsl.scarlet.be, Ping timeout: 265 seconds)
17:23
<vsuojanen>
lauri: I think it's something with nbd mounts and perhaps ltspfs.
17:23
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPWithoutNFS
17:24
<quinox>
vsuojanen: maybe, it would suggest that the locally running CUPs is important... maybe the printing dialogs are just out-of-sync or something
17:27
<vsuojanen>
what desktop session do you have? perhaps someone here has usedd the same distro and session as you
17:27
<lauri>
vsuojanen: both NBD and NFS use now aufs/overlayfs
17:28
vsuojanen: it's even incorrectly documented there, scripts are looking for aufs/overlayfs
17:30
"LTSP chroots require aufs/overlayfs support in kernel to work so until now we have been using Ubuntu kernels that have the required patches."
17:53
<vsuojanen>
I'm not expert here but least the ltspfs mounts different type filesystems and they need to be mounted locally (local devices). I don't know if it's possible to have rw without overlayfs on top
17:54
the root image is ro image or nfs
17:54
*ro nfs
17:56
<lauri>
vsuojanen: I have booted Linux over read-only NFS with some tmpfs mountpoints
17:56
and I think that's the way it used to be with LTSP on Ubuntu 12.04
18:01khildin has joined IRC (khildin!~khildin@ip-83-134-135-112.dsl.scarlet.be)
18:01
<vsuojanen>
you are right. I remember that this changed when I started to use 14.04. Some LTSP servers ltsp*..conf files are also sourced different from 12.04
18:06
it's getting better. it's just documentation is old.

<vsuojanen>
not saying 12.04 was bad but it's good time to start looking also 14.04
18:09
<alkisg>
(09:03:05 μμ) muppis: work_alkisg, but then isn't there i386 directorey created under it, so created chroot wont be in root of stick? ==> that's a feature, you can use one stick for multiple chroots :D
18:09khildin has left IRC (khildin!~khildin@ip-83-134-135-112.dsl.scarlet.be, Read error: Connection reset by peer)
18:17
<alkisg>
lauri: do you mean the old method of bind-mounting each file that we wanted to make writeable, from the tmpfs to the nbd/nfs?
18:18
<muppis>
alkisg, but I wanted to use for just one and even boot the client from stick.
18:18
<alkisg>
lauri: it's very very difficult to maintain a list of files that need to be writable in a client boot, and it changes with each distribution/version etc
18:18
muppis: then you can mv the files, it only takes 1 sec
18:18
They're in the stick, not in the disk
18:20
<muppis>
That's true, but then same use rsync even it takes longer. :)

<vsuojanen>
I have built client chroot directly to USB. symlink the ltsp BASE dir (/opt/ltsp) to USB and skip creating the image. I have used TFTP_DIRS="/tmp" for updating the client images
18:41
then rsync or cp the images to USB assuming you want to mount the image locally

20:06
Did you want something?
20:07
<dgroos>
Howdy alkisg
20:07
<alkisg>
Hello
20:07
<dgroos>
I do have a question--seems like the fix you did the other day might have gotten overwritten?
20:07
back to the same issue.
20:08
I did do an dist-upgrade...
20:08
<alkisg>
Ah. You either need to download the same version again, or wait for an update...
20:08
<dgroos>
download the same version? That sounds good.
20:08
<alkisg>
dgroos: http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ltsp-upstream/ltsp/ltsp-trunk/revision/2648
20:08
Browse files at that revision, locate ltsp-update-image
20:08
Put it to /usr/sbin/
20:08
<dgroos>
that version works for 14.04?
20:09
<alkisg>
You have 14.04.2, right?
20:09
<dgroos>
And I just need to re-load every time I dist-upgrade w/new kernel?
20:09
yes
20:09
<alkisg>
I'm not exactly sure when the change happened, in .1 or .2 or .3
20:09
<dgroos>
I'll check...
20:09
<alkisg>
It's after the 3.18 kernel I think
20:10
You don't need to reload it, no, unless you get a new ltsp version
20:12
<dgroos>
ah, it's 14.04.3
20:13
<alkisg>
which kernel?
20:14
Phantomas: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=bcache-fs-linux&num=1 ==> bcache *fs* ? :)
20:14
<dgroos>
strange, here it's saying 14.04.1?: 3.16.0-46-generic #62~14.04.1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 11 16:28:19 UTC 2015 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux
20:15
<alkisg>
You have the -utopic instead of the -vivid kernel
20:17
sudo apt-get install --purge linux-generic-lts-vivid linux-headers-generic-lts-vivid linux-image-generic-lts-vivid
20:17
20:17
<dgroos>
lsb_release -a and that gives: No LSB modules are available. Description: Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS
20:17
<alkisg>
...or something like that
20:17
Yes both results are ok, you have 14.04.3 with the 14.04.1 kernel
20:18
*14.04.2, probably...
20:18
<dgroos>
:-)
20:18
<alkisg>
The build of the 14.04.2 kernel was done on an 14.04.1 VM :D
20:18
Nothing to worry about
20:18
<dgroos>
'k. I'll try the command and see...
20:19* alkisg reboots to get the -vivid kernel as well...

21:44* maldridge is still tracing self service system issues for 1st year accounts...
21:46
<dgroos>
work_alkisg: hmmm… not working again, same boot issue. Happened after rebuilding the image (worked at that time) and a reboot of server (didn’t work after that). Ideas?
21:47
<maldridge>
dgroos: something beign set in sysctl but not saved to a file?
21:48
<dgroos>
I’ll check syslog?
21:49
not sure how to check.

21:59
<dgroos>
work_alkisg: I googled and checked /etc/sysctl.conf and every line there was commented out.
22:00
Then checked /etc/sysctl.d/ folder and has 8 files, not sure if I should check them all? What I’m looking for?
22:02
<maldridge>
dgroos: I suggested that on the off chance that you had enabled IP forwarding live and didn't commit to a file
22:08
<dgroos>
work_alkisg I set up the server at the start of the summer. I didn’t do anything out of the normal as best I remember. Do I just need to put that 1 file in /usr/sbin/ upon reboot?
