<smelo>
greetings channel.
00:07
I've run into an issue trying to boot my thinclient. After aquiring a dhcp address I recieve an error like: Negotiation: Error: Server closed connection"
00:08
Im not sure how to dig deeper into it as i don't have a shell on this server because it cannot complete the boot.
00:08
can anyone point me in the right direction?

<StreamTom>
Hello. I've just started working with LTSP on ubuntu 12.04 and I was hoping someone could point me towards how to make my own desktops. I want a kiosk, but not necessarily the Firefox one
09:17
I'm struggling to find esources though
09:26
<gvy>
what do you want of it?
09:28
<StreamTom>
Well, my project is to create a 'jukebox' type machine. What I'm really after is how to set up auto login and have a different desktop environment (like Openbox or Raw X)
09:29
I was also curious as to what the config options were to create a server fat client, I already have a desktop fat client working
09:30
It's not a common use case so I'm having difficulty finding documentation for that
09:31
<gvy>
do you need shared users/data (or would you benefit from centralized updates)?
09:31
<StreamTom>
Shared users and data would fit me better I think
09:31
<gvy>
that is, there are standalone webkiosks like webconverger (or my smaller altlinux based images) but it's definitely not about ltsp
09:32
<StreamTom>
Ok, thanks
09:32
<gvy>
then the terminal server approach might be better indeed
09:32
kiosks tend to *avoid* any state like user data, hence the question...
09:32* gvy done a few projects with those
09:33
<StreamTom>
Oh, I see what you mean, there won't be any persistent data if that's any help
09:36
If you know anywhere to look I think a good place for me to start would be learning how to customise which parts of the setup, I would guess some is done on the server and some is done on the image before build

StreamTom, just in case you'd like to get some feeling with kiosks: http://ftp.linux.kiev.ua/pub/Linux/ALT/people/mike/iso/mkimage-profiles/live-webkiosk-mini-t6_20120330-i586.iso
10:20
it helps fiddling with a simple case sometimes to figure out what one *really* wants to get integrated in a bit more complex one

hi all
12:01
am trying to setup ltsp server in debian squeeze
12:02
i got the ldm screen and the client accepts the username and password
12:02
but nothign happens after that
12:02
its just showing a rotating cursor with black screen
12:02
what am i missing?
12:03
<gvy>
prem1, check dns just in case
12:04
<prem1>
gvy, i have only dnsutils installed in my machine
12:04
no other dns servers
12:04
<gvy>
at least I've seen "X cursor and nothing else" on LTSP4 based tech as a result of any of client/server being unable to (back)resolve the other correctly
12:05
I mean, check that both hosts resolve the other
12:05
*the other's IP to hostname and then resolve that hostname to that IP
12:06
<prem1>
gvy, sorry i didnt get you really., am bit weak in networking
12:06
anyway all i can see is the client boots , get IP from server and tftp image and displays ldm
12:07
it does accepts the login crediantials too., and try to start gnome ( iguess)
12:07
but not displaying any desktop ., i cna tfind any error log in server too
12:07Parker955 is now known as Parker955_Away
12:08
<gvy>
prem1, if you know IP addresses of both client and server (use "ifconfig" or "ip ad" to find out), check on a *local* console of each of them whether "host a.b.c.d" (or "resolve a.b.c.d") works
12:09
<prem1>
done gvy
12:09
i will chkeck out and come back
12:09
<gvy>
like, (client side) host 192.168.0.1 -> server.local; host server.local -> 192.168.0.1; (server side) host 192.168.0.200 -> ws200.local; host ws200.local -> 192.168.0.200
12:09
if there's no "host" try "resolve"
12:10
or ping :)
12:10
<prem1>
okey gvy
12:10
so it means that probably the connection is lost ?
12:10
thats why its not logging ?
12:11
<gvy>
rather not connection but protocol level troubles
12:12
X11 is pretty picky about resolving
12:12
<prem1>
will there be any logs in server for the client errors ?
12:13
<gvy>
but please note that these considerations might be irrelevant since I didn't check them with current xorg and ltsp in debian (or ubuntu whatsoever), just hit that back in 2006 or so
12:13
heh
12:14
client's Xorg.0.log would have a *single* vague line that might hint but only if one was looking that hard already...
12:14
something like "retransmission cap hit"
12:14
<prem1>

i am looking for hardware alternatives to a bunch of old pc

the question is what thin client are recomended for school rough use

<alkisg>
It depends on the money you're willing to give... e.g. if your clients have 1 gb ram and a proper graphics card, they could work as ltsp fat clients and be able to display fullscreen youtube videos or 3d apps without stressing the server
17:38
If you don't want to spend much money, you can use e.g. raspberry pi with $35 each...
17:38
And there are many many options between those 2 examples
17:41
<huizache>
so we can use raspberry pi as thin clients?
17:41
but without much ram...
17:45
is there a place i can compare thin clients?

hello, I use ltsp with active directory authentication. after i performed a apt-get upgrade, I can no longer log into thin clients. it just waits for a bit and then resets. how can i troubleshoot the issue? is there a command somehwere to show verbose output when its trying to log in?

and regarding my problem, it just sits at the "verifying password. Please wait" screen for about a minute and then resets. I tried removing splash quiet from pxe but that is before this happens. It's like it's timing out with the AD server or something...but not sure why that would be since it worked before the software upgrade. config files seem to be unchanged unless there is one i missed.

you might try some liveusb (or livecd via usb dvd drive) to figure out which distro supports that chip -- if it's a powervr species then I'm basically sorry for you, these beasts are extremely inconvenient but to some extent supported
20:42
that is, debugging a network-booted system is somewhat more hassle when one isn't that used to it :-)

good idea

i dont know how include module like insmode

take lspci (better lspci -vvvnn, even) and lsmod output off that host if possible

the problem it when the client boot the lspci match the server and not the client
