I asked in #linux, but think there may be some good advice from here too: Looking for a multifunction printer (networked, to be shared by everyone in an office): color, scan (2-sided)/copy, duplexing... 30+ PPM... and works well with CUPS. Haven't been able to find a great resource online, most of the printing resources seem way out of date. Thanks!
15:32
We're a doing a bunch of pamphlet/booklet style prints that we pass out to training participants... 20-30 pages... 10 to 15 copies at a time. Color, lots of graphics, 2-sided
15:32
This has been HORRIBLY slow with HPLIP and PCL 6 color PPDs and our HP color laserjet MFP M570dn printers
15:33
Along with lots of other issues with them (probably shared blame between the hardware and the PPDs)
15:33
Probably looking to spend $1k-$3k each (USD)... open to leasing
15:34
...thanks ;)
15:40

mwalters: we've got a couple monocrome kyocera that have great. our color lasers are hp 4550, probably light use compared to you tho, and haven't been great, just mostly functional

<mwalters>
That sounds similar to my experience with the HPs... Except I think they're starting to have logic board/power supply issues... really wonky behavior from most of them
15:50
The HPLIP driver just resulted in suuuuper slow duplexing and out of memory issues... the PCL6 color PPD works better... just not like how it should though, I think
15:52
the older 470s we have are tanks, though... they're just not fast/efficient enough for what we're printing. I had gotten a quote from Staples/Xerox for some versalink thing... trying to get them to commit to some sort of trial period on the lease to see how they perform before I really commit, so we'll see there... I remember xerox having solid unix support, and the one colorqube we have works pretty well.

i have a little xerox at home, love it, but the linux support is pretty meh. I did work, but had to dissect their package and rebuild to get it to install on x64

(06:31:10 PM) mwalters: (networked, to be shared by everyone in an office) ==> with ltsp, a usb printer is automatically shared to the clients (scanner too with 1 line). But I guess you won't find any good multifunction printers that are usb only anyway...

yeah, like I said, we're printing like 10 to 20 copies of a 20-45 page handout a few times a week
18:17
We need a proper MFP "office copier" thingy
18:17
My fear is that I'm going to drop like $3k on something and its going to have terrible CUPS drivers ;)

Brother seems to advertise linux drivers on the product pages... and we have a few small ones scattered about that seem to work OK.... I wonder
20:02
<pppingme>
mwalters the majority of brother printers are fully pcl and postscript compliant, so even without a specific driver, they are usually still very easy to get to work (for printing anyway, scanning is a different question)

Unfortunately alkisg, chatted to one of the engineers at the Pi Foundation, turns out the new graphics driver isn't actually enabled for older Pis by default in Buster, so that won't be the issue we were seeing yesterday :(
20:45
<Sleaker>
mwalters: most modern printers also work with the generic PDF driver.
20:45
if they support ipp they should work with the generic Pdf ipp driver.
20:46
I'm pretty sure that's every laser brother printer within the last ~10ish years.

Yeah, we're using the pcl6 pxlcolor PPD for our HP mfp 570dn printers... we just have really strange issues with all 4 or so that we have of them
22:20
They might just be lemon models, though... they throw memory errors when copying even ;)
