14:10
<highvoltage>
hmm, good question
14:11
it's a native package and the first rough cut. it's valid isn't it?
14:13
<vagrantc>
it's valid. although may as well be 0.1
14:13
the extra 0 doesn't gain much
14:13
just a minor style preference
14:14

indeed

apparently, the gtk2-engines-murrine maintainer and i have a difference of opinion over weather it should recommend murrine-themes ... :(

hmm, for some reason I thought I removed that dependency
14:37

14:38

<dubkat>
so here's a question, and id prefer this didn't turn into a "my distro is better than your distro" arguement
15:24
but i have 10 thin term's to setup (perferably by monday)
15:24
my distro of choice for many years has been Gentoo (and gentoo hardened, when appropriate)
15:25
i see there's an LTSP overlay, but if it's completly unstable it wont be much use to me
15:26
i "grew up" on redhat, and i suppose in a pinch i could use Fedora or Centos and find my way around ok... but id like to stay with Gentoo
15:26
input from others would be apprciated
15:27
i guess all i want to hear is that "it can be done"
15:28
<highvoltage>
well...
15:28
(without starting a distro war)
15:28
you're better off with something debian-based imho. ubuntu has great ltsp support
15:29
<dubkat>
thats what i hear, but that would require me learning how yet another distro does their thing... since they all have their own qurks
15:29
<highvoltage>
not because of any religious reasons or anything weird, but merely on the amount of packages (and more importantly, quality of packages) available
15:29
they do indeed, but it's an investment, not a waste of time
15:29
<dubkat>
i don't suppose there's a "hardened" variety of ubuntu?
15:30
<highvoltage>
ubuntu has hardening built-in: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Features
15:30
<dubkat>
i think ive heard ubuntu uses pax?
15:31
<highvoltage>
you can optionally secure more post-installation: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Security
15:31
pax?
15:31
this one? http://packages.ubuntu.com/oneiric/pax
15:32
<dubkat>
no
15:32
this...
15:32
http://pax.grsecurity.net/
15:33
basicly, stack smash protections, etc
15:34
its not really a requirement, just on my wishlist

15:41
<dubkat>
ya
15:41
<highvoltage>
this is probably the easiest way: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall
15:42
<dubkat>
thank you
15:42
<highvoltage>
if you want something even quicker and easier you can do it from an edubuntu disc too, but I assume you don't want all of edubuntu either :)
15:43
(well, now that I think of it the new edubuntu installer gives you a choice to unselect some things in the installer)
15:44
<dubkat>
what i have pictured in my mind, is my remote office of ~10 people making phone calls (its a call center), editing spredsheets (i make people use LibreOffice when i can, even on winblows)
15:45
so, they only need the basics, i might... if everything seems stable enough, enable them to listen to music or whatever
15:46
oh. ubuntu has a built in ltsp installer
15:46
well you just sold me i think
16:00
thanks for your help guys
16:08
<highvoltage>
you're welcome
16:12
<dubkat>
oh, i want 10.04, right? not 11.04
16:12
<highvoltage>
I have a rule: newer is always better!
16:13
(but maybe you do want 10.04)
16:13
<dubkat>
well, i would agree, i'm a bleeding-edge kinda guy (i do use gentoo after all!) but i thought 10.04 was the LTSP stable version of ubuntu
16:13
if i'm wrong, then by all means
16:15
<highvoltage>
LTS != LTSP
16:15
<dubkat>
rutroe
16:15
now i'm confused
16:15
<vagrantc>
lts = long term support
16:15
<highvoltage>
LTS = Long Term Support
16:15
LTSP = Linux Terminal Server Project
16:16
LTSP works fine in all Ubuntu versions
16:16
<dubkat>
ooh, i didn't know thats what the LTS stood for :)
16:16
ok, then let me ask this (im sorry if this is the wrong chan for all these questions)
16:16
one of the reasons i moved away from RH was i was sick of "upgrading" and the nightmare that always ensued
16:16
how hard is it to upgrade from one version of ubuntu, to another?
16:17
<vagrantc>
if you want smooth upgrades, try debian
16:17
<dubkat>
typical nightmares??
16:17
<highvoltage>
ah, then LTS is probably good, since it's supported for 3 years on the desktop and 5 years on the server
16:17* dubkat facepalms
16:17
<highvoltage>
dubkat: you can also upgrade quite easily from one LTS release to another (they're released every 2 years) and quite easy to upgrade
16:18
<dubkat>
what does ubuntu have that debian doesnt? (besides hype and marketting)
16:18
<vagrantc>
artwork!
16:18
<dubkat>
haha
16:18
<vagrantc>
and a large userbase
16:18
<highvoltage>
dubkat: if you're willing to configure things yourself then debian is great
16:18
<vagrantc>
it's also debateably more integrated
16:19
<dubkat>
ubuntu?
16:19
<highvoltage>
dubkat: it has some more steps if you want to set up ltsp, for instance.
16:19
<dubkat>
i'll stick with ub
16:19
<vagrantc>
sometimes debian is a little rough around the edges ... ubuntu typically only has one default way of doing things
16:19
highvoltage: or less steps, depending on how you look at it
16:19
<highvoltage>
dubkat: I guess you could try both for a week and decide for yourself, but if you're not used to debian yet then I usually suggest Ubuntu. it eases you into it a bit more.
16:19
<dubkat>
but LTS versions, as i understand don't include new software, right?
16:20
ie, FF4
16:20
<highvoltage>
vagrantc: I suppose.
16:20
dubkat: right, but there are backports for them
16:20
<dubkat>
so, giving my users firefox 4 and the newest LibO shouldn't be too difficult?
16:20
<highvoltage>
you don't get it automatically and if it's not in backports you can get it from a PPA usually
16:21
<dubkat>
PPA? i assume that's the ubuntu name for a repo?
16:21
<highvoltage>
nopeI hate linking to omgubuntu... but...
16:21
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/01/new-ppa-makes-installing-libreoffice-on-ubuntu-easy/
16:21
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/03/firefox-4-ppa-for-ubuntu-10-04-and-10-10-users/
16:21
PPA = personal package archive
16:22
so yes, a repo
16:22
<dubkat>
aah, thanks
16:22
another Q
16:22
i'm a KDE user, is KDE too bloated for a thin client?
16:23
<highvoltage>
not so much a question of bloat as how much get rendered in software over the network
16:23
<dubkat>
all but one of these people will be likely new to linux
16:24
<highvoltage>
if you use the compiz window manager you get great performance since your windows just become vectors that are sent over the network. with kwin it becomes lots and lots of images and can become quite slow
16:24
<dubkat>
compiz on a thin client!?
16:24
it will work?
16:25
ill worry about bells and whistles later
16:25
what about gnome?
16:25
<highvoltage>
yep, usually compiz + gnome is a good combination
16:25
<dubkat>
intresting
16:26
(i hate kde's effects, compiz is so much smoother)
16:26
which sadly, is currently broken on my desktop
16:31
just to make sure i'm not making a mistake here
16:32
dispite the fact i'm installing this on a server, i want the DESKTOP version, correct?
16:33
<vagrantc>
correct
16:33
it is essentially a desktop server.
16:34
<dubkat>
ok
16:34
<vagrantc>
the service it provides is desktops, so you need all the desktop software
