Hi, is that a way (config file, or so) to display a bitmap while the terminal is booting ?

for instance, while the terminal starting from the nfs stage, there is only a cursor on the screen

08:17
<sbalneav>
Seeing if ogra's around. I think I squashed a few bugs last night, I want him and vagrantc to check.
08:17
One of the long standing bugs we had was that the chroot was hardcoded in a lot of places to /opt/ltsp.
08:19
fgiraldeu's building chroots in /opt/ltsp/i386-dev, and this breaks several of the scripts
08:19
so I sat down for 2 hours last night and generalised all the ltsp-update-* scripts.

I've a question pertaining to LTSP on Ubuntu Feisty. I've installed it, I can get the client to boot into it... but none of the logins work on the client. I've tried swapping to the console on Ctrl-Alt-F1, it gives me the login prompts, but none of the username password combos work. I know the usernames exist on the server. Any ideas?

Please help.. My ltsp clients won't login. The loginscreen disapers for a few seconds and goes to black and the returns. Auth.log shows the user being authorized, and a session is being started.
16:16
<lns>
JonNoob, have you tried running 'ltsp-update-sshkeys' ?
16:16
i know that can happen if you change IP information and the ssh keys don't match
16:17
<JonNoob>
oh.. that is very possible... Just trying it now
16:18
<lns>
not sure if you have to restart the client(s) or not..maybe do it just to be safe, but i think you can just try logging in after re-starting ldm
16:18
<JonNoob>
I am rebooting the client now...
16:19
<lns>
what distro are you using?
16:19
<JonNoob>
edubuntu feisty
16:19
it didn't help :-(
16:19
<lns>
cool
16:19
did you change ip information?
16:20
<JonNoob>
yes. running 172.16.0.0/255.255.0.0 network
16:20
<lns>
hmm
16:20
has your client(s) ever worked?
16:21
logging in that is
16:21
<JonNoob>
yes.. they have..
16:21
<lns>
so is changing your ip info the only thing that has changed between when they worked and now?
16:22
<JonNoob>
I think so..
16:22
<lns>
you sure you've changed it everywhere that is required?
16:22
<JonNoob>
not completely sure :-)
16:22
<lns>
lol
16:22
ok
16:23
<JonNoob>
Will you look at my conf files?
16:23
<lns>
i'd recommend searching around for where it is you need to change all of the IP info.
16:24
<JonNoob>
tried but couldn't find it... But I better try again :-)
16:24
<lns>
is it acting as a dhcp server too?
16:24
<JonNoob>
yep
16:25
I wanted to make it use reservations for my clients, but it wouldn't boot with that conf.
16:26
<lns>
was the previous ip in the same subnet as your dhcp scope?
16:27
as in, have you changed your dhcpd.conf?
16:27
in /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf (or whatever it is)
16:28
<JonNoob>
only changed dhcpd.conf to change ip. Do I need to change it somewhere else? Original ip was 192.168.0.X
16:28
<lns>
how bout /etc/hosts
16:28
or /etc/network/interfaces
16:29
and possibly /etc/resolv.conf (if applicable)
16:29
192.168.0.x is generally a /24 (255.255.255.0) subnet as to where 172.16.x.x is a /16 (255.255.0.0) - you need to make sure this is reflected everywhere as well
16:30
<JonNoob>
did hosts, interfaces but not resolv.conf.
16:30
i only have my windows DNS listed there (nameserver 172.16.3.1)
16:32
<lns>
make sure your /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf reflects everything
16:32
and re-run ltsp-update-sshkeys
16:33
<JonNoob>
looks right to me...
16:34
ran ltsp-update-sshkeys again and rebooting client
16:34
<lns>
k...as far as i can tell ltsp-update-sshkeys is the only thing you have to do
16:35
i've experienced ldm weirdnesses like that before too
16:35
usually it's that or i'm just typing in something wrong ;)
16:35
<JonNoob>
well could have been that, but i tried several accounts
16:36
<lns>
if none of that works, try the desperate action of rebooting the server and rebuilding the chroot
16:36
<JonNoob>
The strange thing is that the user can login from NX
16:36
<lns>
though i'm sure it probably isn't the problem, it couldn't hurt
16:36
<JonNoob>
Nomachine NX that is
16:36
<lns>
k.. well its definitely related to ltsp then
16:37
how fast is the server?
16:37bobby_C has quit IRC
16:37

it is very fast... 2xdualcore amd cpu, 4 gigs ram
16:37
only one client for now :-)
16:40

hehe
16:40
well rebuilding the chroot won't be a big issue then
16:40
i'd try that if i were you just to try it
16:41
rm -rf /opt/ltsp;ltsp-build-client
16:41
probably ltsp-build-client --arch i386 if its a AMD64 install

I solved it :-) I have installed Sabayon(and forgot about it). It demands that every user have an profile...
17:09
i have an fuse quistion. I have integrated my users from my AD with my new Edubuntu Feisty install. My problem is that the users are stored in my AD, so I don't have a local profile. Without an local profile I can't choose "Allow use of fuse filesystems like LTSP Thin Client blockdevices" in users and groups.

20:16

What's your issue?
20:16
<johnny>
well first questions
20:16
1. should i be able to login to console if i switch to vt1
20:17
2. what hostname should show up in ldm
20:17
<sbalneav>
1) no
20:17
<johnny>
in relation to #1, login via ldm does work
20:17
oh.. i was told yes before .. guess not :)
20:17
like 2 weeks aqo
20:18
<sbalneav>
2) Usually the server's name you created the chroot on
20:18
<johnny>
ok.. cool
20:18
i just wanted to make sure that was all well
20:18
<sbalneav>
You can, if you set root's password in the chroot.
20:18
But normal users, no.

currently i'm using ubuntu

that's what it says to do iirc?

What happens if you just use a fixed username and password?
20:27
without the pipe?
20:27
<johnny>
aha.. good idea..
20:28
hmm.. guess i might have to kick somebody off a computer
20:28

20:28
oh also.. the directx option doesn't work standalone

i mean, if that is the only enabled option
20:28
only mentioning it in case it is related
20:30
<sbalneav>
What makes you think it doesnt?
20:30
<johnny>
that it doesn't work? cuz i get the same effect i mentioned earlier
20:30
if it is uncommented
20:30
<sbalneav>
DIRECTX doesn't help with login
20:31
it only makes the connection faster by avoiding encryption
20:31
and "hostname|" isn't going to help you too much for autologin, since all your terminals will think they have the same hostname.

20:59
<sbalneav>
Yeah?
21:00
Try running hostname from two of your terminals.
21:00
2 different ones.
21:00
<johnny>
they do say the server hostname, but they do get their hostname from dhcp
21:00
so.. there must be a way to force it through
21:01
<sbalneav>
How many terminals do you have?
21:02
<johnny>
4 atm
21:02
<sbalneav>
You'll have an easier time setting up this:
21:02
[00:MA:CA:DD:RE:SS]
21:03
LDM_USERNAME="term1"
21:03
LDM_PASSWORD="term1pass"
21:03
[11:MA:CA:DD:RE:SS]
21:03
LDM_USERNAME="term2"
21:03
etc
21:03
<johnny>
yeah.. i suppose :(
21:04
<sbalneav>
do you what gadi suggests, you need to assign static addresses and names in dhcpd.conf anyway.
21:04
<johnny>
but it seemed like it should work by gadi himself :(
21:04
what's what i have
21:04
it says the proper hostname right before it loads the kernel
21:05
err s/what's/thats/
21:05
<sbalneav>
What does your dhcpd.conf file look like?
21:07
<johnny>
i'm using dnsmasq
21:07
not dhcpd
21:07
<sbalneav>
Can't help you then.
21:07
I don't know anything about dnsmasq
21:08
<johnny>
dnsmasq is awesme
21:09
awesome*
21:09
<sbalneav>
Except when it's not working for you, as in passing the hostname down.
21:09
Like what you need.
21:10
Anyway, awesome or not, everyone involved with ltsp uses the stock dhcp3-server
21:10
<johnny>
now i have something else to go on then
21:10
<sbalneav>
so you're going to have to solve that one yourself.
21:10
Another option is just to write your own mini command to generate a userid.
21:10
Say, one based on the last octet of the ip address
21:11
So if you hand out ip addresses in the range of 192.168.0.1 -> .253
21:11
<johnny>
aha.. true
21:11
<sbalneav>
you could write a few-lines long shell script that would grab the last number, and put the word "host" or "term" in front of it.
21:12
<johnny>
well i think i can prolly fix this issue
21:12
now that i have a better idea of what is wrong
21:12
<sbalneav>

<spackle>
anybody have pointers for audio in flash player on edubuntu?
21:50
Do the classic ltsp tricks work? like linking the library and creating the socket directory?
21:50
(they don't seem to be working for me just now.. ;) )
21:52
<sbalneav>
spackle: Have you installed libflashsupport?
21:53
<spackle>
let me see...
21:53
hi sbalneav !
21:57
<ibt>
how do i install ltsp-gutsy in feisty?
21:58
<sbalneav>
Not recommended :)
21:58
<spackle>
sbalneav: I don't see it, is that an ubuntu package or in a package or do I need to go grap it?
21:58
<sbalneav>
We're in heavy development right at the moment, some things aren't guarenteed to work.
21:58
<ibt>
sbalneav: that's fine. i'd just like to know how to test it
21:58
<sbalneav>
ibt: Install gutsy
21:59
<mistik1>
sbalneav: have you seen it? http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/08/10/2148253
21:59
<sbalneav>
Yeah, saw it.
21:59
yawn.
22:00
I mean, it's great news, but really, I stopped caring about that a year after SCO came forward with the lawsuit.
22:00
<mistik1>
yea, but its good to see
22:00
<sbalneav>
Sure, but it was a forgone conclusion for a long time.
22:00
It's just been made "official"
22:00
<ibt>
sbalneav: know where i can read about installing gutsy?
22:01
or well, is this 'tribe1' stuff what i want?
22:01
<sbalneav>
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/tribe4
22:02
hot off the presses
22:02
<ibt>
ahh, yeah, okay
22:03
<sbalneav>
mistik1: Linux growth never really faltered due to SCO. What is nice about this decision is that it places the Unix copyrights with a GPL friendly company.
22:03
Now, if Novell was SMART, what they'd do is put this to bed once and for all.
22:03
<spackle>
sbalneav: do you have any concerns about their new MS relationship?
22:04
<sbalneav>
spackle: For linux, no.
22:04
<spackle>
how would they put it to bed?
22:04
<sbalneav>
Let me ask you a question: any company that MS has entered into a partnership with, has that company ever existed 5 years later? :)
22:05
GPL or BSD license Unix.
22:05
<mistik1>
lol
22:05
<spackle>
ah
22:05
and any company that explicitly goes head to head with MS the same thing is nearly true.
22:05
Borland who?
22:06
Google is stepping very carefully.
22:06
<sbalneav>
Now, they'd have a LOT of people to sign off on, since a lot of companies and people have had their fingers in the Unix source code. But I think it'd be doable. Novell's got lawyers, and it's just an excercise in tracking things down, and getting consent.
22:07
<monteslu>
eclipse really killed borland
22:08
<sbalneav>
However, what is more likely to happen is for things to continue on status quo.
22:08
<monteslu>
well, after microsoft severly wounded it
22:08
<spackle>
monteslu: more like eclipse buried the coffin.
22:08
<monteslu>
yeah probably
22:08
<sbalneav>
That Unix patents/procedure/methods continue to be used as a hammer to cow people/companies into line
22:09
<monteslu>
a win for novell is still a loss
22:09
<sbalneav>
Du mußt Amboß oder Hammer sein
22:10
<monteslu>
da
22:10
nine ?

wine on centos sucks ass
22:15
didn't any check that all the fonts are missing?
22:16
anyone i mean
22:16
<spackle>
they probably can't legally include some
22:18
<sbalneav>
Well, you can always legally include anything, if you can get the party to agree to it :)
22:18
If the party can't, or won't, then no.
22:18
If that's the case, they should, IMHO release as much as they can.
22:19
Two of the biggest contributors to Unix would be IBM and Sun.
22:19
Both of who would benefit by a GPL'd Unix, as they'd then be able to snag good bits from Unix, and good bits from Linux.
22:20
In fact, what could potentially happen is a single "Unix" standard, of a merged Unix/Linux.

Then you'd have "One True Alternative" (r)(tm) to Windows, and you'd really have some room to compete.

Hey rjune
22:21
<rjune>
one true alternative?
22:22
<sbalneav>
release Unix, or as much of it as possible, as GPL
22:22
GPL Unix merged with GPL Linux, add GPL Java.
22:22
Like I say, it's a fantasy.
22:23
<spackle>
they probably can't legally include some fonts (sorry)
22:24
<rjune>
we have GPL java, sort of
22:31

<rjune>
like it would stay a monoculture for long
22:37
<spackle>
;)
22:38
<rjune>
mistik1: whaddya think?
22:38
<mistik1>
rjune: need to steam clean that engine buddy
22:39

that's what jen said.

I like that model though
22:39
<rjune>
that engine needs to come apart

huh, School doesn't start until week after labour day here in Canada.
23:24
<monteslu>
school starts here on tuesday
23:25
I really wanted a fedora based muekow, but I bet it doesn't happen until fedora 9 or so :(
23:34
<sbalneav>
Did you find out if anyone in the Fedora camp is currently working on it
23:35
<monteslu>
Eric said something was in the works, but no one on the dev list has mentioned it in over a month
