18:16alkisg_away is now known as alkisg
18:16
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I made a nice precise-i386 chroot, and I was thinking to make one for wheezy as well (as it's the last that supports a xorg with xaa)
18:17
Do you think I could install ldm+ltsp from stretch in wheezy?
18:18
Or, any chance for ltsp 5.5.6 in wheezy-backports?
18:18
<vagrantc>
it would have to go into wheezy-backports-sloppy ... no idea if it would work
18:18
<alkisg>
If it's easy for you to send it there, I can surely test
18:18
<vagrantc>
i don't *think* much has changed, but never know
18:19
i daresay it's fairly low on my priority list
18:19
<alkisg>
LTSP 5.5.6 works in precise, so I imagine it would also work in wheezy, if compiled for that glib etc
18:19
(compiling ==> ldm, mostly...)
18:20
Ah, it's not a matter of a couple of commands to backport it there? OK, I'll check if I can just install the ldm.deb from stretch
18:21
<vagrantc>
well, i wouldn't upload something i didn't test, so it's not just a couple commands :)
18:21
we'd proably need to do it *fast*, as wheezy-backports-sloppy will probably close when wheezy goes EOF
18:22* alkisg thought that debian would have some infrastructure for developer testing...
18:22
<vagrantc>
EOL
18:22
<alkisg>
If you send it to -sloppy, I can test it; that's all I can say :)
18:22
<vagrantc>
alkisg: there are plenty of places to build packages, but testing virtual machines, no
18:24
alkisg: if i uploaded packages to one of my repositories, would you test it?
18:24
<alkisg>
Sure
18:24
The end result will be a compressed btrfs wheezy image
18:24
I don't mind if the ltsp version that it has is not in any official repositories
18:25
<vagrantc>
i also need to backport ltsp to jessie-backports at this point
18:25
<alkisg>
vagrantc: to build a wheezy chroot in a stretch environment, I'd just run ltsp-build-client --dist=wheezy, right?
18:25
<vagrantc>
and also realized i never uploaded a backported LDM
18:25
alkisg: that's the theory!
18:25
i just recently did it with stretch->jessie
18:26
<alkisg>
Nice, I'll have a nice wheezy image by Friday then :)
18:26
<vagrantc>
looks like i have a wheezy LTSP virtual machine still sitting here ... wonder what the state of it is
18:28
<alkisg>
With newer distro releases, we're losing non-kms drivers, xaa drivers, non-pae kernels etc, and we have some uefi (64-bit only) servers that need to boot i386 clients, so premade images will start being more popular
18:28
<vagrantc>
painful, but probably true
18:29
<alkisg>
I think I'll be maintaining precise-i386, wheezy-i386, and stretch-i686
18:29
<vagrantc>
why bother with the stretch image?
18:29
<alkisg>
(a compressed btrfs chroot for one of each)
18:29
Mixed labs have newer and older PCs, and a newer kernel+xorg might work better there
18:30
<vagrantc>
but stretch would be simple enough to build
18:30
i guess people want something that will "just work" and it adds enough variables to build it themselves
18:32
<alkisg>
I've also put an ltsp_config.d script there to provide some lts.conf defaults that minimize ram
18:32robb_nl has left IRC (robb_nl!~robb_nl@ip-83-134-1-160.dsl.scarlet.be, Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
18:32
<alkisg>
And some other scripts to auto-fetch epoptes and ssh keys etc
18:34
<vagrantc>
at one point i had thought about publishing images that were built automatically
18:48
alkisg: ok, got my server set up again, got some build environments, will try simple rebuilds
18:49
<alkisg>
Ty, remember to send me the URLs :)
18:52
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i suspect ltspfs may not work correctly
19:06
alkisg: deb https://cascadia.debian.net/~vagrant/debian wheezy-backports-sloppy-UNRELEASED main
19:07
alkisg: should have amd64 and i386 packages of ltsp, ldm and ltspfs
19:07
alkisg: the signing key is available in the debian-keyring package :)
19:15
alkisg: hrm. apparently have some issues with the file permissions
19:20kjackal has left IRC (kjackal!~kjackal@2a02:587:3105:f600:4dc4:3b99:2b17:a17d, Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
19:22
<vagrantc>
alkisg: oh, it was my local proxy ... you should be fine
19:32
alkisg: ldm works ... ltsp-localapps doesn't work (we'd need to revert the changes to support unicode, i think)
19:34
ltspfs doesn't appear to work
19:37* vagrantc tries downgrading ltspfs
19:41kjackal has joined IRC (kjackal!~kjackal@2a02:587:3105:f600:4dc4:3b99:2b17:a17d)
19:44* vagrantc wonders if it has more to do with i386 client and amd64 server
19:44
<vagrantc>
alkisg: but, overall, not bad for a quick test
20:01
<alkisg>
vagrantc: cool, I'll keep the old ltspfs and revert the unicode changes, thanks!
20:01
<vagrantc>
alkisg: old ltspfs doesn't work either...
20:01
<alkisg>
(although I have localapps disabled in that image to save RAM)
20:02
I don't think it will be much of a problem, devices that need xaa and older kernels usually have 128 ram, no ltspfs needed there usually...
20:18* alkisg starts with the stretch chroot first..
20:22kjackal_ has joined IRC (kjackal_!~kjackal@2a02:587:3105:f600:4dc4:3b99:2b17:a17d)
20:39
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I got this with `ltsp-build-client` under stretch, any clues?
20:39
"Clearsigned file isn't valid, got 'NOSPLIT' (does the network require authentication?)"
20:40
<vagrantc>
oh, haven't tried ltsp-build-client yet
20:40
never seen that before
20:40
was it during an apt-get update call?
20:42
<alkisg>
vagrantc: paste.debian.net/401780
20:43
Retrying in case I got a broken mirror...
20:43
<vagrantc>
alkisg: in theory, http.debian.net should protect you from that
20:44
oh, it was also renamed to httpredir.debian.org
20:44
<alkisg>
So I should use --mirror something?
20:44
<vagrantc>
nah, it's just a cname to httpredir.debian.org
20:44* vagrantc should update the defaults
20:46
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I got the same error, could you give me a --mirror cmdline that would bypass the issue?
20:47
<vagrantc>
alkisg: --mirror http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian (or some other real mirror)
20:50
<alkisg>
Ty, I think that got me past the issue...
20:50* alkisg was trying --copy-sources-list but it's --copy-sourceslist
20:58
<alkisg>
vagrantc: I got "unable to locate package linux-image-486" (translated from greek)
20:58
Wrong default kernel?
20:58
(building a stretch chroot in a stretch host)
21:00* alkisg tries with KERNEL_ARCH=586...
21:00
<vagrantc>
oh, fun.
21:01
alkisg: yeah, apparently linux-image-486 was removed in stretch
21:06
<alkisg>
Ouch, the KERNEL_ARCH hack is Ubuntu-specific
21:07
KERNEL_VARIANT, ok
21:08
<vagrantc>
well, --kernel-package
21:08
<alkisg>
vagrantc: is "--kernel-variant 586" good enough?
21:08
or, "--kernel-package linux-image-586", whatever...
21:09
<vagrantc>
full kernel package
21:09
unless i put in an option for each ...
21:29
<alkisg>
`ltsp-build-client --mirror http://ftp.gr.debian.org/debian --late-packages epoptes-client --purge --kernel-packages linux-images-586` did it :)
21:31
<vagrantc>
--purge?
21:33
<alkisg>
Well, to automatically delete the older failed chroot
21:34
<vagrantc>
ah
21:36
<alkisg>
Meh, the debian initrd used to be small, now it's on par with ubuntu, 15mb...
21:36
<vagrantc>
progress!
21:37
<alkisg>
Hah, no vi/nano in the chroot, installing...
21:37
<vagrantc>
yeah, i think i use debootstrap --variant=minbase
21:38
maybe now that fat chroots are more common, i shouldn't
21:38
for thin clients, it made sense
21:38
fun things like less and man will be gone
21:39
<alkisg>
With modules=netboot, it's 10 mb, better
21:39
(in initramfs.conf)
21:40* alkisg is glad to see "default ltsp-NBD" in pxelinux.cfg/default :)
21:41
<alkisg>
But after all, I do think we should be making symlinks for i386, pae, and amd64 kernels, and shipping a static pxelinux.cfg/default...
21:42
The way we do it is still complicated...
21:43
"to be continued.... tomorrow..."
21:43* alkisg waves
21:43alkisg is now known as alkisg_away
