| |
03:54 | <sep> Kamping_Kaiser, if you know what your doing that should not be a problem, the chroot that the clients mount as thir root must ofcouse match the clients
| |
03:54 | <Kamping_Kaiser> i should be able to manage that, so thats cool. thanks for the answer :)

03:59 | <chsch> Hi! We are using ltsp with fujitsu siemens A200 thin clients (X driver: fbdev). rdesktop works properly on one screen and kdm appears on the another one. The first problem: after logging in with kdm (fullscreen) the kde session (ubuntu 6.06) does not use the full screen. There is a blue border on the left and bottom of the screen. Any ideas?
| |

04:00 | <chsch> The second problem: parts of kdm (screen 2) sometimes appear on the rdesktop screen (screen 0) making it unusable.

06:59 | <markit> hi, newbie question... is it possible having compriz and all those nice 3D effects with ltsp?
| |
07:02 | <sep> markit, i expect that would require some awsome thin clients with great gfx cards and take a lot of bandwith
| |
07:02 | markit, none of my thin clients have gfx chips with 3d capabilities atlest.
| |
07:03 | markit, if you use ltsp to run diskless workstations then yes you can use whatever you like
| |
07:03 | <markit> sep: maybe "next generation" will ;) or mini-itx has
| |
07:04 | but is the xgl part already included in ltsp?
| |
07:06 | <sep> markit, the new ltsp builds the chroot for the client from the packages of the host system,
| |
07:07 | so you should rather check what is in the packages of the ltsp server.

| |
09:19 | <Petaris> hrm
| |
09:19 | Hi ogra
| |
09:19 | <ogra> its *not* the ubuntu-directory-server
| |
09:20 | ubuntu will likely build something different here, all we will do is include smbladp by default, its very likely that ubuntu will go a different path
| |
09:21 | <Petaris> ogra: that looks more like using ubuntu as a network auth server
| |
09:21 | I was inquiring about authenticating to Active Directory
| |
09:21 | <ogra> there is also a client spec
| |
09:21 | <Petaris> ahh
| |
09:22 | <ogra> https://blueprints.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+spec/edubuntu-network-auth-client
| |
09:23 | <Petaris> hrm
| |
09:26 | that client seems only intended to be used with the edubuntu-auth-server
| |
09:27 | or can it also be used to auth against active directory and edirectory
| |
09:28 | <ogra> its the default client that will be used in ubuntu as well, but probably with pam-mount enhancement
| |
09:28 | <Petaris> ok
| |
09:28 | but will it be able to auth to AD and eDirectory?
| |
09:29 | <ogra> no idea
| |
09:29 | <Petaris> hrm
| |
09:29 | <ogra> the focus for edubuntu is to atuth against the edubuntu server first place
| |
09:30 | <Petaris> you mean the ltsp clients right?
| |
09:30 | <ogra> no
| |
09:30 | <Petaris> I know that, but I'm talking about the users
| |
09:30 | <ogra> all "client systems"
| |
09:31 | <Petaris> oh
| |
09:31 | <ogra> or lets better say "sessions"
| |
09:32 | <Petaris> but what about user authentication
| |
09:32 | is there something then that can be done server side
| |
09:33 | that would allow the user auth to stem from either AD or eDirectory?
| |
09:33 | there are a lot of orginizations that use one of those two products

| |
09:51 | <Petaris> moquist: ahh, ok
| |
09:52 | <moquist> ogra: BTW, I think edsadmin is basically ready to go except that sorting and searching in the main window are, at best, limited. We need separate columns for first and last names, and they need to be sortable. The entire form should be searchable.
| |
09:53 | ogra: I've been working on the sorting but I'm having to learn GTK as I go and I haven't had a breakthrough yet. :\
| |
09:54 | <jammcq> hey, it's O'Quist
| |
09:54 | <moquist> ogra: The problem is that once you have more than, say, 30 users, it becomes a big pain to find people in the list.

| |
14:21 | yeah at one of the schools here in MO
| |
14:21 | <jammcq> using LTSP-4.2 ?
| |
14:21 | <bill_c> yeah 4.2
| |
14:21 | <jammcq> make sure your users are members of the 'fuse' group
| |
14:22 | <bill_c> went through debug steps in wiki, and got past all the errors out of script
| |
14:22 | on suse, so no fuse group
| |
14:24 | <jammcq> ok, what's the ownership of /dev/fuse ?
| |
14:24 | and perms
| |
14:24 | <sbalneav> What's the server? 64 bit?
| |
14:24 | <bill_c> root:root and set to 777 for testing :)
| |
14:25 | 32 bit sles9
| |
14:25 | <jammcq> hmm, that seems like it should work. sbalneav you have anything to add ?
| |
14:25 | did you have to build the fuse module for that?
| |
14:25 | some suse's don't include it
| |
14:25 | <bill_c> hi scotti :)
| |
14:25 | jammcq: yeah I built it
| |
14:25 | <sbalneav> So, at what point on the checklist does it fail?
| |
14:26 | <bill_c> sbalneav: works when logged in as root perfectly, but as user, it mounts on device, creates icon on desktop, mounts to server, but user has no permission to access folder
| |
14:26 | and neither does root have perms to access when logged in a user
| |
14:26 | <sbalneav> what's the ownership of the fusermount binary?
| |
14:27 | <bill_c> root:root, suid/guid
| |
14:27 | <sbalneav> 755?
| |
14:27 | <bill_c> yeah
| |
14:28 | <sbalneav> what version of fuse?
| |
14:28 | <bill_c> 2.5.2
| |
14:28 | <sbalneav> What version kernel?
| |
14:28 | <bill_c> 2.6.5-7
| |
14:28 | <sbalneav> ok
| |
14:29 | what happens if you try to run the command: ltspfs ws00x:/tmp $HOME/foo
| |
14:29 | you'll want to do this on an xterm on the terminal, as the user you're logged in as.

| |
14:36 | shouldn't be as user.
| |
14:37 | Do you have sshfs installed on the box?
| |
14:37 | <bill_c> no
| |
14:37 | <sbalneav> Sounds to me like your fuse install is broken.
| |

| |
14:40 | <bill_c> yeah, ws240.ltsp
| |
14:41 | everything works if I log in as root on the terminal
| |
14:42 | but logging out and back in as user, goes through all the motions, I can see it mounted in mount, just no perms for users to access

| |
18:17 | <Gadi> (are yousure it was booted from the correct LTSP server)
| |
18:17 | <killsalad> gray with X

18:18 | from the shell
| |
18:18 | <killsalad> no firewall on the server, but i have router
| |
18:18 | <Gadi> then, you will be sure you are trying to connect to the X server
| |
18:18 | is the router between server and client?
| |
18:18 | <killsalad> no
| |
18:18 | <Gadi> ie: different subnets?

18:19 | <Gadi> ok

18:19 | <Gadi> not good having 2 LTSP servers connected to the same switch
| |
18:20 | <cliebow> make sure server= in lts.conf is what it should be

| |
20:05 | <cliebow> bookmark thata..or google for ubuntu win32-codecs
| |
20:09 | <daniQ> k..
| |
20:09 | daniQ has quit IRC
20:17 | mdz has joined #ltsp
20:18 | cory has joined #ltsp
20:18 | cory is now known as bushboy
20:19 | <bushboy> LTSP-4.2 is great
| |
20:19 | <cliebow> 8~)
| |
20:19 | <bushboy> I especially like the new localdev support
| |
20:19 | <cliebow> it gets even better!!!!
| |
20:20 | sound is the next hump to get over
| |
20:20 | <bushboy> I have had sound running with esound
| |
20:20 | <bdole42> I'm working on sound and local USB device access now myself
| |
20:20 | <bushboy> works nicely
| |
20:21 | <bdole42> Sound's being a pain though, every time I add "SMODULE_01= sb xxx yyy zzz" it tells me that I have an error on that line
| |
20:21 | <cliebow> xxx yyyy zzz?
| |
20:21 | <bdole42> irq, io, and dma settings
| |
20:22 | <cliebow> so it is an isa card?
| |
20:22 | <bushboy> pci makes life easy
| |
20:22 | <bdole42> It's a Capio 508 with built-in SoundBlaster emulation
| |
20:22 | No PCI slots at all
| |
20:23 | SMODULE_01=sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1
| |
20:23 | <cliebow> rjune was here a minute ago..hes done some of the sound work
| |
20:23 | <bdole42> I can't find the client dmesg log anywhere though
| |
20:23 | It has a variety of messages about /dev/dsp not existing too.
| |
20:23 | So I'm doing a bunch of reading and googling.
| |
20:24 | <cliebow> did you set screen_01 to shell aand look on the client?
| |
20:24 | <bdole42> I set screen 2 to shell but I can't seem to switch to it. Haven't done 01 yet, but I can try it
| |
20:24 | bushboy has left #ltsp
20:25 | <cliebow> worth a ashot..i dont know off top of balad head where to look
| |
20:25 | bushboy has joined #ltsp
20:25 | <bdole42> This is the most I've ever done with Linux and I'm having a blast
| |
20:25 | <bushboy> what distro?
| |
20:25 | <cliebow> It is not trivial what you have done so far
| |
20:25 | <bdole42> Ubuntu Server 6.10 with kubuntu-desktop loaded on top
| |
20:26 | <bushboy> ah
| |
20:26 | I'm using debian myself
| |
20:26 | <bdole42> I have plenty of Windows (and DOS) experience, so CLI is not scary
| |
20:26 | <cliebow> i think rjune is quite proficient with kde
| |
20:26 | <bdole42> In fact, once I have up on trying to use KDE/Gnome I found it much easier to use
| |
20:26 | But I have KDE on there for the wife
| |
20:26 | <bushboy> ah
| |
20:27 | I prefer the bare bones fluxbox or icewm
| |
20:27 | <rjune> I still am
| |
20:27 | <cliebow> i run icewm with nautilus on top in redhat for production server\\
| |
20:27 | rjune :1!!!!!!
| |
20:27 | <bdole42> Ubuntu/Suse are the only ones that I have used so far.
| |
20:27 | Deciding which distro was the hardest part :)
| |
20:28 | But I liked the philosphy being Ubuntu/edubuntu so I decided to stick with it
| |
20:28 | <rjune> bdole42: <ctrl>-<alt.>-<FX> will switch away from X
| |
20:28 | <cliebow> ive used all mananer of fedoras and rh..libranet..breeazy dapper edgy
| |
20:28 | <rjune> at a regular text console, use <alt>-<FX>
| |
20:28 | where X is a number from 1 - 12
| |
20:28 | <bdole42> rjune: I found that F2 (which should take me to screen_02,) only took me to a monitor in sleep mode
| |
20:28 | <rjune> bdole42: you using old soundblaster ISA cards or something?
| |
20:28 | <cliebow> i have a a stciky a key
| |
20:29 | <bdole42> Yes, it's sb emulation built into the Capio 508
| |
20:29 | It was free, so it's now my client
| |
20:29 | <cliebow> free is good
| |
20:29 | <bdole42> Just checking sound on my VMWare client
| |
20:29 | <bushboy> freebies are great
| |
20:29 | <cliebow> sosmetimes 8~)
| |
20:29 | <bushboy> I use so much garbage for ltsp terminals
| |
20:30 | <cliebow> heh..ive used nubus mac for clients
| |
20:30 | <bushboy> LOL
| |
20:30 | <cliebow> a awhole lab full..20
| |
20:30 | <bdole42> There is a slight X problem where the some pixels on edges of windows go missing or are "speckled", but other than that it runs amazing for 300MHz/32MB RAM
| |
20:30 | <dberkholz> i've got 2 of those at home
| |
20:30 | that'd be fun to use
| |
20:31 | <cliebow> it was so awesome the first time i used rdesktop on a mac running redhat
| |
20:31 | <bdole42> I have a PPC Performa 6360 I'm thinking about trying as a client
| |
20:31 | <bushboy> I still have my old commadore stuff but little chance there
| |
20:31 | <bdole42> Don't bet on it
| |
20:31 | <cliebow> bdle42: my best clients are 200 mhz aquantas
| |
20:32 | <bdole42> Have you seen the TCP stack and WWW server someone's hacked up for the C64
| |
20:32 | Plus a windowing GUI to boot.
| |
20:32 | Plus there's a VNC client for the C64 too
| |
20:32 | <cliebow> bdole42:the limiting factor is the network card..
| |
20:33 | <bushboy> anyone here use phiget usb sensor kits? I want to rig an ltsp terminal up to monitor my fish tanks
| |
20:33 | <cliebow> the sonic cards are useless..i used daynaport laydown nubus cards
| |
20:33 | on the 5260..the 6100 builtin cards worked fine as is
| |
20:34 | <bushboy> lol
| |
20:34 | vnc on C64
| |
20:35 | <bdole42> They have a streaming audio server. Streams 2000 Hz 1 bit audio direct from the cassette recorder
| |
20:38 | ltspbot has joined #ltsp

| |
20:39 | <cliebow> my collection is there..
| |
20:39 | <rjune> bdole42: I'm sorry, ISA cards don't really work with LTSP very well
| |
20:40 | <cliebow> http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8833
| |
20:40 | bushboy:http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/8833
| |
20:42 | <bushboy> neat
| |
20:42 | <bdole42> rjune: I figured that might be the case. It's a dream, and something I'll bang my head against when I'm bored :)
| |
20:42 | <rjune> does the machine have a PCI slot?
| |
20:45 | <bushboy> http://www.phidgets.com/index.php?module=pncommerce&func=itemview&IID=116
| |
20:45 | I was going to use that to control it all
| |
20:45 | connects via usb and there is a C API for linux
| |
20:45 | ltspbot_ has quit IRC
20:45 | <bushboy> has 8 Analog Inputs, 8 Digital Inputs and 8 Digital Outputs
| |
20:45 | <bdole42> rjune: No, it's very bare-bones
| |
20:45 | <cliebow> i am out of my league here..bushboy..
| |
20:45 | <bushboy> me too
| |
20:45 | thats the fun part

| |
20:47 | <bushboy> HAHA
| |
20:47 | I'm moving back to winnipeg
| |
20:47 | so sbalneavs will be around
| |
20:47 | haha
| |
20:47 | I've met him a couple times
| |
20:48 | <bdole42> Followed by "- accepting connections on port 16001 \n /dev/dsp: no such file or directory"
| |
20:48 | <cliebow> bdole42:have to sort out why that parse error for starters
| |
20:49 | <bdole42> It appears about 10 times
| |
20:49 | Then "accepting/dev error/dev error, accepting/dev error/dev error" repeats a few more times
| |
20:49 | <cliebow> perhaps tomorrow post your lts.conf and someone will take a peek at it
| |
20:50 | <bdole42> I can do that
| |
20:50 | <cliebow> im ooh for the night see ya'
