alkisg: I'm in a hurry, but just to inform you... I've been able to make it work with sshfs, is ssh_follow_symlink that creates that lnusertemp error, that I was not able to solve
14:38
I'm going to return the server too school now, it's not perfect but works
14:38
<alkisg>
markit: didn't get it, so all is ok now?
14:38
Ah, good
14:39
<markit>
I've to understand how kde uses caching and subscribe to some dev mailing list to ask and ask for improvements
14:39
even if probably they don't have the resources to fix it
14:39
I've also some scaring kde crashes of some service, but I've no more time
14:39
I'll tell the teacher just to ignore them :)
14:40
hope to be able to install HP multifunction printer and have it work
14:40
<alkisg>
HP printers usually work out of the box
14:40
<markit>
yep, seemd so, but I had crashes of the entire server with previous install
14:40
that I "fixed" installing their binary
14:41
or installing the printer with their setup, not cups one
14:41
I'll cross my fingers
14:41
really is like walinking on eggs
14:41
I'm more and more scared about this... is so stressful

hi, I would like to ask if anybody is using LTSP with Gnome 3. It is not a much about on the web.
15:01
<muppis>
Gnome Shell?
15:02
And with which distro?
15:03
<alkisg>
There are many sessions available for Gnome 3: gnome shell, gnome fallback, unity, unity 2d... all of those work fine with LTSP, but those sessions that require 3D accelleration don't work on thin clients, only on fat LTSP clients

thanks for information, but what latest ubuntu 12.04 which offers unity 3d as ltsp ?
18:11
<alkisg>
It doesn't, unity 3d only works with fat clients
18:12
It's unity 2d that works with thins
18:12
<imincik_>
so thank you very much for this confirmation
18:13
<alkisg>
Debian wheezy does support ltsp fat clients, if you have good enough clients for that
18:25
<imincik_>
Yes, I will go with fat clients
18:26
Currently I am just going to buy them.
18:28
Thanks a lot for help. There is not much to read about 3d support with ltsp
18:29
<alkisg>
Google for 3d remote X
18:29
LTSP just uses remote X, it doesn't do anything special there

<kieppie1>
hi all.
22:21
I'm new to LTSP, but have been using Linux (pref. Ubuntu, Debian) for a while now
22:22
I've recently completed my ERPXE setup (a KVM MV), & got a number of Raspberry Pi's - thinking of deprecating my fat dektops in favor of something along the lines of LTSP clients
22:23
Can anyone please talk to me this if you have a similar setup, or maybe correct me if I have any incorrect assumptions?
22:26
I'm also curious re the more wizz-bang GUI interfaces over remote sessions, i.e 3D hardware-acceleration. it's not *quite* ripe AFAIK
22:26
so that would mean not compositing available for stuff like Unity desktop (& definately not even elementary gaming)
22:45
<markit>
kieppie1: I've not such a setup, I can copy and pasted something has been discussed here some hours ago
22:45
[19:48] <alkisg> imincik_: 3d accelleration over the network either sucks or doesn't work at all, so only gnome-fallback or unity-2d work on thin clients
22:46
kieppie1: of course, you have to create a chroot of the architecture of raspberry
22:46
and of course a thin client is ok for office usage, schools, but not games :)
22:47
btw, I've ordered a raspberry myself from RS, still waiting it after 3 months, sigh
22:47
<kieppie1>
yea - that's my experience too. does not mean it's not feasible, but not ready yeat or very, VERY tricky. in the KVM space, the SPICE project attempts to address this as VDi exists & persorms well in VirtualBox & VMWare
22:47
<markit>
even if has not enough ram to be useful OMHO, 512MB have costed 5$ more but...
22:48
<kieppie1>
I got my RasPi's from Element 14 − 1st one took long on pre-order, but the other 5 arrived withing a week or 2 from order
22:49
<markit>
anyway, I've gotta go, I saw your message just because I was going to close the program :)
22:49
bye
22:49markit has left IRC (markit!~marco@88-149-177-66.v4.ngi.it, )
22:49
<kieppie1>
Well, the RasPi is actually a pretty good case: the device has 3D HA, so it can handle client-side rendering pretty-well. if the server can do some sort of "pre-render" & compression & the (RPi) client presentation & IO
22:49
bb
23:03
<Hyperbyte>
kieppie1, problem isn't in hardware accelleration, it's in availability of compositing
23:03
Compositing is X server feature, which window managers and the like can use for 3d features
23:04
Since window managers run on thin client server, and X runs on the clients, compositing needs to work over remote X. I think that's where difficulties begin.
23:11
Either way, European here too. G'night. :)
