How do I manage printers in Fatclients? (ltsp5 chrootless)
11:56
I setup my printers on the server on thinclients I find these prinetrs and I can use them on thinclients but not on my fatclients.
11:58
On the fatclients the Networkprinters will be found and installed automaticly. By one Printer(Lexmark) the wrong or a broken driver is installed, so I cann not managed this printer
11:59
I would like to use the installed printers from the server like on thinclients

Any experience in not using a display manager? For my use case, I want autologin, and each client has its own dedicated user. Simply adding JUST lightdm requires an *additional* 274 packages be installed!
18:24
<alkisg>
eddyTV: sure, install nodm
18:24
Or, apt install --no-install-recommends lightdm
18:24
nodm is unmaintained upstream though
18:25
<eddyTV>
Wondering if it would be possible to do something like what's described in https://askubuntu.com/a/387831 and just start X with a lightweight window manager like xfwm4.
18:26
<alkisg>
Sure, but then you'd ignore everything that does things properly; so you shouldn't complain if usb sticks don't work etc
18:26
As the user wouldn't even be registered by systemd as an active seat user
18:26
<eddyTV>
Hmm. USB sticks aren't an issue for my use case, but I wonder what other implications there are
18:26
<alkisg>
That's also the reason nodm is unmaintained, (and even ltsp's ldm), because noone wants to bother to do all the complicated things display managers need to do nowadays
18:27
It *should* be as easy as running an xsession, but it's far, far from that
18:27
Even forgetting to set an environment variable may make panels not load at all
18:28
eddyTV: are you sure you tried apt install --no-install-recommends lightdm?
18:28
It should be very light on dependencies
18:29
And with lightdm-autologin-greeter, it should be easy to autologin too (that's from the nodm programmer)
18:32
For me those 2 just add 5 MB to the image

<eddyTV>
I'm looking at the distrobuilder source to see what it does for `apt`...
18:36
It looks like that *used* to be the default, but not anymore: https://github.com/lxc/distrobuilder/commit/a1ba76774
18:38
Let me add "--no-install-recommends" to the package `flags:` in my distrobuilder yaml file and see what changes

(this is taking a little longer than expected since it appears I have to defined a "custom" package manager to be able to set flags)

printer: Quick how-to: RCFILE_01="/usr/sbin/jetpipe /dev/usb/lp0 9100 &" in lts.conf, reboot client, then go to server's add printer dialog, and specify network printer → jetdirect → ltsp123.local
20:09
<uumas>
Yeah, that's outdated
20:27
<eddyTV>
alkisg: that definitely made a big difference! I rebuilt my chroot with --no-install-recommends as the default, and it went from 995 packages to 464 packages (both with lightdm). I wonder which of those 531 packages I actually want, though. :)
21:19
(darn... some "required" packages are missing, because lightdm didn't even start when I tested this image)
21:21
like... *xinit*... d'oh.
21:22
This will be fun figuring out what packages to add to the install manifest...

<eddyTV>
Adding "xinit" did allow me to manually run "startx" after logging in via the tty, but still no lightdm.
