hello, I have a question about config of ltsp-cluster. Does anyone is here ?
03:58
I have manage to install ltsp-cluster with an ldap server, but sometimes a thin client return to the login ldm. This happen often with a big firefox locapapps running (multiple tabs open)
04:02
on the page http://manpages.ubuntu.com/lts.conf there is a X_ramperc parameter but I don't find where to indicate to ltsp control center to add this parameter. It is not in the attributes list. Does anyone can give me a clue ?

<Appiah>
guest128754 are you gonna connect it with USB directly to the client?
07:02
or is it gonna be connected to the server?
07:02
<guest128754>
i need to connect it (and others) directly to the clients
07:03
<Appiah>
so its a local printer setup
07:03
<guest128754>
yeah, connected to the thin clients
07:04
<Appiah>
you need to edit lts.conf
07:04
http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/karmic/man5/lts.conf.5.html#toptoc5
07:04
there you go
07:05
<guest128754>
thanks!
07:06
does the ltsp image need to be updated each time you update the lts.conf?
07:06
<Appiah>
no
07:06
the thin client needs a reboot to read the lts.conf again
07:07
<guest128754>
ok, so, once i get these printer settings right, how do i add it to the list of printers? does it just "show up" or do i need to somehow configure cups?
07:09
also, how can i actually tell where the usb printer gets mounted by the thin client? like for the line
07:09
PRINTER_0_DEVICE=/dev/usblp0
07:10
<Appiah>
check dmesg when you plug it in
07:10
I dont know if you have to do anything more ,never used local printers
07:11
<guest128754>
Appiah: I'd normally know how to do that, but how do i access the OS on the thin client?
07:11
<Appiah>
set a root password in the chroot
07:11
<guest128754>
ah, ok

07:34
<guest128754>
okay, so i got my printer setup in lts.conf but how do i get it added to the list of printers on the server?
07:41
<Guerdal82>
thanks
07:43
guest128754: You must add the printer on the server as a jet direct printer in cups, it's that I done to add two epson usb printer sometime ago :-p
07:44
<guest128754>
Guerdal82: even for non-HP printers?
07:45
<AndyGraybeal_>
this is OT, but what kind of racks do yuo guys buy?
07:45
<Guerdal82>
wait a minute, I check my config
07:47
Ok : I used that addres: socket://192.168.0.162:9100 (192.168.0.162 is the ip address of the thin client that have the usb printer connected to it) and Epson Stylus Color 1160 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.3 as driver (it's an example) :-p
07:48
<guest128754>
thanks, will give it a try

Good afternoon.
11:25
Continuing my saga LTSP on my laptop with nothing but a NIC and 512MB.
11:27
Why is update-apt-xapi running on the client? I installed ssh and rebuilt the image and I was getting mouse hangs for split seconds, which stopped when I killed this process. The process started automatically again and so did the mouse hanging.
11:28
Also, number 2 issue now is that the laptop(client) hangs completely if it is left alone for a period. I do not yet know what is causing this.

update-apt-xapi is really update-apt-xapian-index. Still trying to find out what it is doing.

karmic edununtu / ubuntu fatclient.
13:01
Someone else tol dme that the laptop hanging after a couple mins of non use maybe acpi, and stated I disable it. but just disable them in tftpboot, or ib build also.
13:02
alkisdg, thanks for that. Is it just a simple removal of the cron script or is there some command that does it for me?
13:03
<alkisg>
I use this to disable cron *completely*:
13:03
ltsp-plugins/090-divert-cron: chroot "$ROOT" dpkg-divert --divert /etc/anacron.conf --rename /etc/init/anacron.conf

<myjess>
ok soi= you mean to add that 90 file into nplugins and put those two strings in the file? Will ltsp-update-image look at these plugins?
13:14
<alkisg>
No no ok let me write you the exact commands:
13:15
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 dpkg-divert --divert /etc/anacron.conf --rename /etc/init/anacron.conf
13:15
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 dpkg-divert --divert /etc/cron.conf --rename /etc/init/cron.conf
13:15
sudo ltsp-update-image
13:15
Just those 3. But remember, these disable cron.

13:21
alkisg, for turning off acpi and apm ion the client, do i need to add the noacpi and noapm to the build image pxe default file?
13:21
<alkisg>
In /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
13:22
<myjess>
hmm, thinking aboiut this, it would be good there cos update kernels takes it from there to put into tftpboot
13:23
in fact i will put it into that file that updates default. Now if I could just remember which file that was :)
13:24
<alkisg>
/etc/ltsp/ltsp-update-image.conf
13:24
<vagrantc>
editing /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/* directly will get overwritten on server reboot
13:25
<alkisg>
On reboot? Or on ltsp-update-image --force?
13:25
<vagrantc>
there are a number of ways it could get rewritten
13:25
but ltsp-update-kernels is re-run every time a network interface goes up or down
13:26
oh wait, that's just ltsp-update-sshkeys
13:26
<alkisg>
vagrantc: that's sshkeys
13:26
yup :)
13:30
<myjess>
there is an ltsp-update-kernels.conf apparently being asked for inside /usr/sbin/ltsp-update-kernels
13:30
How could i put the boot params into that conf file.
13:30
?
13:31
<alkisg>
myjess: BOOTPROMPT_OPTIONS="noacpi" in /etc/ltsp/ltsp-update-image.conf
13:31
*not* in update-kernels.
13:32
<vagrantc>
Gadi: looks like you reverted a bunch of cd related ltspfs stuff?
13:33
<myjess>
oh, hold on, i just added those two params to ltsp-update-image.conf, but you now say I explicitly add another line with that BOOTPROMPT in it?
13:33
I seem to have two duplicate entries in that conf file fot whatever reasons.
13:33
<alkisg>
You *just* need that line. What other params did you add?
13:34
<myjess>

13:38
alkisg? You said you had a lappy with a 855gm vga chip. Have you ever done just a normal ubuntu karmic boot but turned off quiet/splash?
13:39
<alkisg>
I don't remember about quiet/splash. It booted fine with karmic as a standalone pc
13:39
<myjess>
Do you see the boot process when you do this, cos I still don't on my lappy, but it gas no internal screen.
13:40
It finise
13:40
it finishes init.rd,
13:40
thenj the screen goes to sleep until X starts.
13:40
<alkisg>
I don't remember, it's my wife's laptop...
13:41

just wondering if the driver only displays to internal screen and it takes x TO NOTICE THAT AN EXTERNAL SCREEN IS BEING USED.

I think it was ok, I never noticed any boot problems, splash missing etc on Karmic

right, could be the kernel driver only writing to internal screen then.
13:48
Any ideas why I have kacpid, kacpi_notify and kacpi_hotplug running on the client? I did put noacpi and noapm into the boot options!
13:49
The lappy still hung, thats why I am asking.
13:51
Wnen the lappy hangs, top seems to stay running via ssh to the client but as soon as I exit it, the ssh session also freezes with no prompt displaying.

vagrantc: is "-fp" needed for `poweroff` on debian ltsp?
14:53
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i know it hangs some of the older machines we use at freegeek
14:54
alkisg: but not using it just causes it to go through the normal shutdown sequence
14:54
<alkisg>
vagrantc: it isn't needed anymore on Ubuntu (stgraber replaced it with an upstart .conf file), and it breaks a program of mine as it doesn't give it a chance to properly disconnect
14:54Remaille has joined #ltsp
14:54
<alkisg>
...so I have to use timeouts etc to detect when the client has been shut down
14:55
<vagrantc>
i never really understood why we needed an instantaneous shutdown anyways
14:55
<alkisg>
The shutdown process breaks because of nbd
14:55
<vagrantc>
not on debian
14:55
<alkisg>
So, if debian doesn't need it, and lucid+ doesn't need it, maybe we could remove it? :)
14:55
<vagrantc>
even on debian, nbd shutdown works properly
14:55
<alkisg>
(I'll ask stgraber of course, just asking for a debian confirmation...)
14:56
Perfect
14:56
<vagrantc>
alkisg: people have waffled over that one so many times, and every time it's never made sense to me
14:56
<alkisg>
You don't use ubuntu, that's why it doesn't make sense :D
14:56
<vagrantc>
ubuntu should properly register it's nbd-client/nbd-proxy invocations so they don't get killed on shutdown
14:57
<alkisg>
Right, I think I saw that somewhere
14:57
<vagrantc>
the rationale people give never made sense
14:57
<alkisg>
Marking the init processes with "netboot" or "netstart" or something so that they're not killed at shutdown
14:58pmatulis has quit IRC
14:58
<vagrantc>
alkisg: you just have to register the pids not to kill
14:58
<alkisg>
Hmmm maybe I saw a different way
14:58
<vagrantc>
maybe there are other ways
14:58
but the sensids.omit.d approach (based on something originally developed by ubuntu) works great in my experience
14:59
might have issues with nbd-proxy if the respawn thing causes a new nbd-client to get started
14:59
although nbd-proxy will spawn a new nbd-client so it should be fine
15:00
maybe ubuntu's abandoned sendsigs.omit.d it for something newer...

I just logged out of my test client via iTalc. It is set to auto login, and it did, and now iTalc states no use is logged in, although I know there is! Maybe the ica port has changed?

Yep, that would be the reason. Port changed on logout of client. Just letting anyone know that reads the logs.

alkisg. Why do I have to kill all my nbd servers when I log out or power off the client. I have to do this because they keep i386.img open and even when deleted the space is still used up.
16:14
So if limited on space, and building an image again, the build will crash out cos there is no space left on the filesystem.
16:15
<alkisg>
Nbd tries to keep the connection for a long time in case the client gets offline temporarily
16:15
<myjess>
how can I reduce that timeout?
16:18
Also, and apologies for hitting you with Q after Q, I want to touch a file in the i386 dir that is called "builddate" but if I modify ltsp build or update scripts, I would have to do that every time I updated the ltsp software.
16:18
I know there are conf files read during build and update, is there any way for me to put in a `touch /opt/ltsp/i386/builddate` in one of those?
