<gdi2k>
I am using the dnsmasq method of booting LTSP (I have another DHCP server). Since I upgraded the chroot kernel to saucy (needed for newer hardware), the dnsmasq method does not work. I am getting same as this: http://osdir.com/ml/ubuntu-users/2013-11/msg00561.html
04:19
logs show dnmasq-dhcp to be doing what it is supposed to

<gdi2k_>
further to my last message - if I boot from a regular DHCP server and it passes on all the boot options to the client, the clients boot. but if I boot using dnsmasq it fails, so dnsmasq must be passing wrong parameters. any ideas?

<work_alkisg>
It fails and it goes to busybox?

hi all
07:46
Hi all , am trying to boot thin client from a Spectra DL-D250S model, the machine is booting up, but it ends with only a compressed half screen
07:47
it is a Intel Atom CPU D2500 @ 1.86 GHZx2 preocessor., do i need to install any specific drivers for this model to work with LTSP or wats the problem
07:48
how to get a full workable screen in this thin client?
07:48
<alkisg>
Try without ltsp first
07:48
<prem>
without LTSP in the sense?
07:48
<alkisg>
Yes, e.g. from a usb stick
07:48
If you discover it's not an ltsp issue, ask at #ubuntu, they'll probably tell you to use a newer kernel :)
07:49
<prem>
hmm alkisg in case if it needs a kernel update., should i update the chroot environment of LTSP server alsow ith the kernel?
07:50
or is it enough to install the new kernel alone?
07:51
<alkisg>
That too is an ubuntu question, not an ltsp one
07:51
They'll probably tell you to update kernel + xorg, depending on your version
07:53bennabiy has joined IRC (bennabiy!~Thunderbi@24-181-55-79.dhcp.gnvl.sc.charter.com)
08:09
<gdi2k_>
alkisg, right, issue is clear: root server is set as gateway, not LTSP server. so my gateway is 192.168.1.1, but cat /tmp/net-eth0.conf shows root server as 192.168.1.1 and it should be 192.168.1.11 for ltsp server
08:09
I have IPAPPEND 3 set in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default
08:11
<alkisg>
Pastebin your pxelinux.cfg/default
08:11
And the output of `cat /proc/cmdline` of the client
08:12
<gdi2k_>
http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/7145175/
08:12
cat /proc/cmdline
08:13
hmm, don't have whole output
08:13
sec...
08:13
<alkisg>
...wait, in your dhcpd.conf,
08:13
you don't have next-server=192.168.1.11 ?
08:13
<gdi2k_>
no
08:13
<alkisg>
Are you using proxydhcp or plain dhcp?
08:14
<gdi2k_>
I have a pfsense server providing regular DHCP
08:14
I wanted to be able to select different LTSP servers from clients during boot, so I am using dnsmasq
08:14
<alkisg>
You can do that with a menu, but ok
08:15
So, in your pfsense, do you have next-server=unset?
08:15
So that it's provided by dnsmasq?
08:16gbaman has left IRC (gbaman!~gbaman@host81-130-114-35.in-addr.btopenworld.com, Remote host closed the connection)
08:16
<gdi2k_>
yes
08:17gbaman has joined IRC (gbaman!~gbaman@host81-130-114-35.in-addr.btopenworld.com)
08:17
<gdi2k_>
no boot options set by pfsense
08:17
(if I do set them, clients boot fine, but then I can't use menu)
08:17
<alkisg>
What sends 192.168.1.1?
08:17
<gdi2k_>
how can I tell?
08:17
<alkisg>
Check your configs
08:17
<gdi2k_>
that's the pfsense box, so probably that
08:18
<alkisg>
Tell it not to. :)
08:18
<gdi2k_>
heh
08:19
not sure what is sending it - as it's a boot option, it can only be dnsmasq
08:19
<alkisg>
It's a pfsense question, not an ltsp question. I don't know pfsense so I can't help.
08:19
<gdi2k_>
pfsense is not sending boot options
08:19
(if I set it to send boot options, things work fine)
08:19
dnsmasq menu is like this:
08:19
pxe-prompt="Press F8 if last boot failed. Otherwise wait...", 5
08:19
pxe-service=X86PC,"Manually boot from Server 1","/ltsp/i386/pxelinux",192.168.1.11
08:19
<alkisg>
dnsmasq doesn't know 192.168.1.1 if I understood your setup
08:19
So it can't be sending it
08:21
<gdi2k_>
unless dnsmasq is misconfigured... is /etc/dnsmasq.d/ltsp.conf the only place it could be coming from ?
08:21
<alkisg>
That's a dnsmasq question :)
08:21
No ltsp questions at all today... :D
08:21
OK, it can come from /etc/dnsmasq.conf too
08:22
!ipxe
08:22
<ltsp`>
ipxe: iPXE is the successor to the etherboot/gPXE project, and can be used to netboot clients that don't have a NIC ROM with a PXE stack. To add it to grub, see !grub-ipxe. To add it to the Windows boot loader, see !win32-loader. To download floppy, CD or USB images, visit http://ipxe.org or install the ipxe package.
08:22
<alkisg>
ipxe has a config command which shows you all the values it gets
08:22
ctrl+b; dhcp net0; config
08:23
It might help you in troubleshooting pfsense/dnsmasq...
08:23
`ltsp-config dnsmasq --overwrite` gives you a clean file that you can test your dnsmasq setup with
08:24
<gdi2k_>
ok thanks
08:24
don't understand what changed as the config wasn't touched and everything looks fine there
08:24
worked fine before
08:25
I updated chroot kernel to saucy - could that have had any impact?
08:27
<alkisg>
Not with your dhcp setup. With udev race conditions, maybe, but not with dhcp...

13:22
<givehelp>
Hello
13:22
:P
13:22givehelp is now known as alkisg
13:22
<needhelp>
Can someone help me with making a splash screen for my ltsp client
13:22
<alkisg>
It's not different from non-ltsp clients,so ask in your distro channel
13:23
<needhelp>
It is different
13:23
Ltsp uses pxe
13:23
and normal you use grub
13:23
<alkisg>
It's the same initramfs
13:23
Which distro/version?
13:23
<needhelp>
yes I know
13:23
Debian
13:23
version 7 wheezy
13:24
<alkisg>
The debian live cd uses syslinux, you can copy stuff from there
13:24
It's not an ltsp issue... do you need something related to pxe?
13:24
<needhelp>
maybe
13:25* ogra_ wonders how a splash screen would be related to the bootloader at all
13:25
<ogra_>
they usually operate in userspace right after the kernel is up
13:25
<needhelp>
yes I dont know what i have to change
13:25
<alkisg>
Debian shows a logo in grub
13:26
It doesn't use plymouth
13:26
I imagine needhelp wants a logo in pxelinux...
13:26
<ogra_>
well, thats not what i would refer to as splash screen :)
13:26
<alkisg>
Which is the same as in syslinux, i.e. debian live
13:26
<needhelp>
something like that
13:26
<ogra_>
k, so a static pic in the bootloader then
13:26
<needhelp>
i want to hide the bootloader text
13:26
<alkisg>
Yup, it's easy under pxelinux
13:27
It should be easily google-able too
13:27
<ogra_>
doesnt debian use splashy by default ?
13:27
<alkisg>
And there's the #syslinux channel
13:27
<needhelp>
I did that but it didnt work out
13:27
Its the ltsp image
13:27
It only shows the boottext
13:28
<alkisg>
In that case, the bootloader shows the logo
13:28
So you should see the logo before the ltsp initramfs is loaded
13:28
I.e. nothing ltsp-related has ran at that point
13:28
<needhelp>
yes thats what i want
13:29
hmm okay
13:29
But does someone know how that works?
13:30
<alkisg>
Sure
13:30
<needhelp>
What do I have to do than
13:30
<alkisg>
I'm using something like this: http://alkisg.mysch.gr/steki/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=2828.0;attach=1672;image
13:30
Google and ask in #syslinux if you can't find the answer in google
13:30
It's not ltsp-related..
13:30
<needhelp>
wait
13:30
that is not what i want
13:31
I dont want a menu
13:31
<alkisg>
It's a menu with a logo
13:31
You can only have the logo
13:31
<needhelp>
Yes but i dont need that menu
13:31
<alkisg>
Sure
13:31
<ogra_>
just omit tit then
13:31
<needhelp>
wait a second
13:31
let me explain
13:31cyberorg has left IRC (cyberorg!~cyberorg@opensuse/member/Cyberorg, Ping timeout: 240 seconds)

<needhelp>
i need a graphical boot when the thinclient after it has loaded the pxelinux.cnf
13:34
My client is already working now
13:34
<alkisg>
This is ldm: http://jonathancarter.org/files/images/ldm_ltsp.png
13:35
This is syslinux: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fe/DebianLive.png
13:35
<needhelp>
But it first shows the bootlines and than uses the kiosk
13:35
<alkisg>
You want a syslinux logo that remains after the boot selection
13:35
(i.e. no menu in your case)
13:35
<needhelp>
I dont have to select that
13:36
I just loads the pxelinux conf and than starts up
13:36
<alkisg>
Right, you don't want a menu, you only want the logo, we got that part
13:36
<needhelp>
*it
13:36
yes
13:37
I want a logo until the system is booted
13:37
<alkisg>
Right, I already gave you the answer above.
13:37
<needhelp>
It like booting windows xp
13:37
Which one?
13:37
<alkisg>
Read the logs above ^
13:37
<needhelp>
Its like a loading screen you know
13:37
<alkisg>
Yup, I know
13:38
<needhelp>
You send me some pictures right?
13:38
<alkisg>
(03:24:05 μμ) alkisg: The debian live cd uses syslinux, you can copy stuff from there
13:38

It's not ltsp related, it's syslinux (pxelinux) related
13:38
<needhelp>
yes okay
13:38
<alkisg>
It's a simple menu, no need to ask here in #ltsp
13:38
<needhelp>
Yes i get that
13:38
<alkisg>
*not menu, config file
13:38
You don't want a menu, ok
13:39
<needhelp>
yes thats correct
13:39
only a picture or logo or something
13:39
to hide the boot text
13:39
<alkisg>
ok
13:40
<needhelp>
ubuntu already has it installed its called (plymouth) debian doesnt and id like to work with debain
13:40
w
13:40
Is there something like plymouth for pxelinux?
13:41
<alkisg>
Plymouth is loaded from linux
13:41
Pxelinux is before linux
13:41
You just want a logo
13:41
Use pxelinux.
13:41
<needhelp>
yes okay
13:41
<alkisg>
Ask in #syslinux or google.
13:41
<needhelp>
hmm okay
13:41
<alkisg>
It's just a couple of lines in pxelinux.cfg/default
13:42
<needhelp>
I dont really know how you can configure that in pxelinux
13:42
I did that to try

Hi, I have been trying to find an answer to a problem I have with a fat client setup. Concerning groups. Anyone here who might know?
15:09
The problem is that I can't get neigther glx or sound working without adding users to the 'video' and 'audio' groups on the server.
15:10
Also, I can't mount local devices, which might also have to do with group membership.
15:10
<Hyperbyte>
johan___, not sure. Stick around for a few hours at least, though... I'm sure someone knows the answer.
15:10

Ok. I'm running latest Ubuntu and the default setup for fat clients from the Ubuntu Wiki, which I guess is important. :-)

19:33
<alkisg>
gbaman_: you realize that you're asking me to help you reimplement epoptes, right? :) Just read the code...
19:36
<gbaman_>
large chunk of epoptes features don't work on the Raspberry Pi
19:37
<alkisg>
You installed epoptes-client and it didn't work?
19:37
<gbaman_>
yes?
19:37
<alkisg>
What was the error message?
19:37
<gbaman_>
will give it another go now, 2 mins
19:37
was quite a while ago

19:50
<gbaman_>
i can though remote control client from server
19:50
when i hit broadcast my screen, no error message on client
19:51
no error on server side
19:51
<alkisg>
Launch both epoptes and epoptes-client from a terminal, so that you see stderr
19:51
<gbaman_>
i did
19:52
there is no error on client side
19:52
<alkisg>
Nor on server side?
19:52
<gbaman_>
server starts the vnc server as normal
19:52* ogra_ makes a jedi wave ... "there is no error"
19:52
<gbaman_>
:)
19:52
logout does not work either
19:52
no error
19:53
reboot does though :)

so this is the key line alkisg export $(./get-display)
19:59
so that should set the display variable? then just running the python file still does not work?
