how long will it take? I've got to leave here soon. I don't want to rush you though.
00:04
<toddobryan_>
Have you tried running "sudo ltsp-build-client" ?
00:04
Not sure if that defaults to 32-bit on a 64-bit system...
00:04
<joebob777as7>
yes i did that and since it's a amd64 server it defaults to a an /opt/amd64 directory install
00:05
<jammcq>
joebob777as7: try this: man ltsp-build-client
00:08
<joebob777as7>
i can do a --dist to specify distrubution but it doesn't give me any options...
00:09
<jammcq>
what version of ubuntu are you using?
00:09
<joebob777as7>
feisty
00:09
<jammcq>
read the man page, look at '--arch'
00:09
<joebob777as7>
ok i see it
00:10
that looks like it but what is the paramater i use?
00:10
<jammcq>
looks to me like it says it supports "i386", "amd64" or "powerpc"
00:13
<joebob777as7>
awesome! i'll give it a try thanks a bunch!

jammcq: do you by chance know how the clients figure out which dist to boot from?
00:25
<jammcq>
it's in the dhcpd.conf file
00:25
that would be /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf
00:26
if you want to make your client boot the 386 kernel, you need to point the 'filename' entry to your 386 kernel
00:26
and you also need to change the 'root-path' in the same file
00:26
if you wanna do both 32-bit and 64-bit, there's tons of information on dhcp on the LTSP wiki
00:27
<joebob777as7>
ok thanks. do you know off hand how to do both or should i just search it up on the wiki?
00:27
<jammcq>
read the wiki
00:28
<joebob777as7>
ok will do thanks a bunch~!!!

<Franckito>
Got a problem with LTSP. I installed it and use it on old dell laptops but I can't have a 102x768 resolution. I know it's possible on these laptops. When I launch an old live CD, I've got it. I don't with recent live cds.
07:39
Do you think it's an Xorg problem ? Should I use XFree ? downgrade to ltsp 4.1 ?
07:40
<cliebow>
Franckito, you can specify a modeline in an lts.conf..
07:41
X_MODE_0=800x600 or an entire modeline
07:41
<Franckito>
I don't know the screen refresh rates. I looked for infos on dell.com but couldn't find anything.
07:41
I tried that. Didn't work.
07:42
<cliebow>
this ltsp5?
07:42
<Franckito>
ltsp4.1
07:42
4.2 sorry
07:43
<cliebow>
hmmm..it should..i do that for some wonky lcd s i have in 4.2
07:44
<Franckito>
Without indicating the refresh rates ?
07:44
<cliebow>
X_MODE_0=800x600 40 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666
07:45
is what i have..you can pick out refresh rates with xvidtune
07:46
<Franckito>
I'll try but change 800x600 for 1024x768 ;-)
07:46
thanks for the xvidtunes tip.

maybe I am doing something wrong 1. i go into chroot by: sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 /bin/bash than i try to install it by: apt-get install x11vnc

maybe there is something with repositories? (i have not much experiences with debian-based distos)

<gdi2k_>
greetings. been experimenting with ltsp over the last few days. setup etc. all worked perfectly (thx to ubuntu integration), but I am disappointed with the terminal's performance (K6 - 533 MHz, 196 MB RAM). even at 1024 x 768 the screen draws are slow - irritatingly slow. are my expectations too high?
11:49
<cliebow>
ltsp5?
11:49
<gdi2k_>
yes
11:50
<jammcq>
gdi2k_: what video card in the client?
11:50
<cliebow>
o gra and jammcq have been doing some ..heh
11:51
<gdi2k_>
it's a trident supported card of some sort. problem is that the terminal font turns to chinese half way through the boot, so I can't actually log in to the terminal to check logs etc.
11:51
<jammcq>
hmm
11:52
<cliebow>
completely chines..or sanskrit/
11:52
<gdi2k_>
I can use a gentoo live CD to check exactly what card
11:52
<jammcq>
what version of Ubuntu ?
11:52
<gdi2k_>
well, hard to tell - Cs with little tails seem very prevalent!

11:53
i've been working alot with that lately
11:53
<cliebow>
i second the hmm..i know my ppc chroot works pretty near perfectly
11:53
<gdi2k_>
I also have an AMD 64 which I have tested as a client, works beautifully
11:53
I suspect the graphics hardware in the K6 machine is just rubbish
11:54
<jammcq>
yeah. you might also try setting: SCREEN_07 = startx
11:54
and then enable remote xdmcp in your gdm config
11:55
<gdi2k_>
I can get to the login prompt ok, but I can't switch to the first terminal and login there (as I can't see what I'm doing)
11:56
when I say login prompt, I mean the LDM login
11:57
<jammcq>
what happens if you try to login at the LDM prompt?
11:58
<gdi2k_>
I can login, works okayish. but the redraws are nastily slow
11:58
I also have an NFS issue somewhere - I see error of not being able to find the NFS server on the server when the client is booting, before it turns chinese
11:59
<ernierasta>
gdi2k: I am trying ltsp for only few hours, but i must say that performance is realy not bad (ok, it is problem to watch film, but there is only 10Mbit/s ethernet card in client)
12:01
<gdi2k_>
yeh, if I use the AMD64 machine, I can see the bandwidth hitting its limits when running youtube (at about 8MB / sec) but that's to be expected. However, on the slow machine, bandwidth never goes above 1 MB / sec outbound from the server, which sounds like the terminal is the bottleneck
12:01
(100 MBit network)
12:01
<ernierasta>
(server amd64 3000+, 1GB ram, sata disk; client P2, 300mhz, +- 200MB ram)
12:01
<jammcq>
gdi2k_: encrypting the X traffic over SSH is a huge cpu bottleneck
12:02
<gdi2k_>
ah
12:02
<jammcq>
changing to xdmcp can improve the performance alot
12:04pipedream has quit IRC

<gdi2k_>
ok, I added SCREEN_07 = startx to lts.conf and enabled remote GDM logins, but I now just get the gray X screen, no gdm
12:15
<jammcq>
you need to restart gdm for the new settings to take effect. But, it'll kill your current session, if you are logged in on the console on that server

i've got 64bit and 32bit clients... is there a boot script i could have the server push to them first to discover or have a number to define which they boot as?
18:16
<jammcq>
joebob777as7: didn't I tell you yesterday that you can control that via the dhcpd.conf file?
18:16
it's not a script
18:16
it's a conf
18:17
<joebob777as7>
yes i know i can but i don't know how to have both types of clients i changed it to 1386 but now my 64bit client won't work...
18:17

http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/DHCP
18:17
create 2 'host' entries
18:17
one for the 32-bit client, and another for your 64-bit client
18:18
put the mac address for the 32-bit client in the 32-bit host entry
18:18
put the mac address for the 64-bit client in the 64-bit host entry
18:18
also, in the 2 host entries, you'll need 'filename' and 'root-path' entries, pointing to the proper kernel and chroot environment
