Hi. Would someone recommend a minimal linux distro which is good for booting remote stations. Except LTSP.
I don't need client-server functionality - just need linux to run some linux tests and games
I've created one from my Debian etch installation but its no way a minimal one :)
And making it was a pain

I am no localdev specialist but I believe the drives only mount when you access them from the desktop side
the daemon checks every few secs for mount request
I believe the docs say as much
lapinmalin, : add the user to "fuse" group before using any usb drive

I only test it on WS and on RDP connexion. Because i've got aonther pb for that : i use FREEBSD for the Applications Server

ooh windows fun today
I sopent six hours in a school yesterday afternoon doind packet traces to find out why we were having slow logins. Fun afternoon :-)
I try... After install, i've got a new directory in the WS : /Drives. But when i insert USB Stick, the name of the key is always a directory in /tmp/drives/ Nothing on the RDP connexion (yes i modifie the lts.conf)

a5benwillis, so novell directory server?.i like ldap because the logging can be so profuse..
lapinmalin, id guess sbalneav and Gadi will be around shortly..Gadi i thin has done the seminal work on usb sticks and sound via rdesktop
I wouldnt mind LDAP. Infact I use it on the novel side already for contextless login. But to use it to authenticate linux I'll have to populate each user with a unix uid, gid and home directory attribute. I have over 16,000 user accounts.

yes..pretty simple really..i build a csv with username year of graduation..password using perl or bash to create it ..then run the cvs through a script that uses a known good ldap record as a base..with one common password for all students...because
smbPasswdMustChange is set to 0 it forces pw change at first login
from windows..i also have a piece that inteerupts linux login if that same field is set to 0 and prompts for password change
|07:44||zald has joined #ltsp|
cliebow: Sounds pretty slick. I also have all of these accounts in AD
Cliebow: But the users home directories allexist on novell servers. So I could authenticate against AD but I would still need to log into NDS to mount the HD.
cliebow:Im still testing xdmcp this morning. Hopefuly I can get it working soon.

hi to all! i have a set of client that not have pxe boot eprom on the network controller. exist a way to make a partition of some megs that contains pxe spefific for my network card, load and run it?
working the sprint for schooltool/cando
sbalneav, thanks a lot, i wouldnt like to have to point out regressions in the release notes :)
my old school district has it's high school students writing competency tracking software
and it's seriously impressive
I come back with my usb stick problem : when i insert a usb stick in the WS it's recognise with a new directory in /tmp/drives/ but this directory is empty. From RDP connexion i see this empty directory. From X applications server (FreeBSD) ican see anythink !
lapinmalin: So, it works from X?
sbalneav: Im reinstalling my server this morning to try xdmcp, again.....
no, it doesn't work from X !
Have you followed the checklist?
sbalneav: "checklist" is The checklist for debugging problems with local device access is at http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LTSP-42-LocalDev#Troubleshooting. Please work through all 12 steps, record the results, and paste the results to the pastebot at http://pastebot.ltsp.org
since I never could get xdmcp to workI figured I would reinstall afterall of the changes I had made trying to get NDS authentication working.
it's ok til point 6
Resume points 1 2 3 4 5 6 8 OK
point 7 : how i install fuse with FreeBSD
That's for YOU to figure out.
I don't even know if fuse is supported under FreeBSD
Other test : if i do : mount -a on WS, i can see the content of the directory ON the WS and on RDP connexion
how do i bind the ltsp workstation ipaddress per user account?
I don't support local devices over RDP
Mainly because I don't have any RDP stuff here to try it out on.
ok, so how can i do a mount -a automaticaly when a usb stick is insert ? Or is it stupid ?
Well, you'll have to get fuse working first.
But all of the binaries on the web page for the ltspfs stuff have been compiled for linux, so you'll have to re-compile those as well.
This page: http://fuse4bsd.creo.hu/ seems to indicate that fuse is available for FreeBSD in the ports collection, whatever that is.
On freebsd port, i can install fuse
so i've to wget ltspfs to freebsd and compile it ?
For RDP connexion, i use gadi tar.gz : ltsp-rdp. Any help ?
Yes, you'd have to pull the ltspfs sources down from cvs, and re-compile them.
As for gadi's rdp stuff, you'd have to talk to him about it: I've got no way to test any of it here, so I just ignore Windows RDP :)
We don't use any windows here at work, so Bill Gates doesn't affect me at all :)
I prefer to use Linux/UNIX but in our french school, some exam must be on BillSoftware :-(((((
|09:22||* jammcq just bought 2 dell desktop machines WITHOUT the microsoft tax :)|
When ltspfs is compile, what i have to do ? How can i check ? With the list ?
sbalneav: Must benice to be fully liberated.
arrrrrrgh..w 2003 server Sucks
cliebow: Whats wrong?
Cliebow: Just open the cd tray and insert an envelope addressed to Bill Gates andit should work fine :-)
lapinmalin: Follow the ltsp4.2 localdev page. I know absolutely nothing about FreeBSD, so I have no idea where you'll need to insert start-up scripts.
Oh, dont forgetto inclose money.
I'd personally recommend the following:
1) If you're planning on sticking with FreeBSD, do without local device support
sbalneav : Thanks very much !!! I'll try now
why whithout local device ?
2) If you need local device support, ditch FreeBSD and move to a linux platform that's supported.
cliebow: What's wrong?
Because you're going to have to do a LOT of work to get it working.
and I won't be much help throughout it, as I don't know much about FreeBSD.
ooohhh.nothing really...i have to set mea testing and it is a pos java app that w2k3server doesnt want to play with...in the interest of SECURITY
What a pain.
well i should go down there..nx is logey from there..refresh is laggy
lapinmalin, ltspfs will need uved, is bsd using that anywhere ?
i dont know
udev indeed :)
i search immediatly udev
it cares for all the magic on the client, you will need it

Anyone have an easy fix for the grub error 18 problem after install in Vmware???
Booting up live cd now to see if I marked the wrong partition bootable when I built the system.
lapinmalin: i should be around
I'm in EST (GMT -5)
I'm in France
Before leaving : i tried to lanch /usr/bin/perl -w /usr/sbin/lbussd and it's seem the WS has lost its DISPLAY
Vous parlez francais ? :-)
ok, i've to improve my english
un pequito espanol
y piu meno italiano
my girlfriend speak italian
why the program say it's loosing the DISPLAY ?
do you run rdesktop on display :0?
or *some* graphical desktop on SCREEN_01?
no rdesktop is on SCREEN_02 in lts.conf
yes i use SCREEN_01 for startx
ok. make sure you ctrl-alt-f1 so X initializes on screen_01
my lbussd script is kinda stupid
and requires a valid display :0
yes ctrl-alt-F1 i found X
gadi: Couldyou help my get xdmcp working on edubuntu?
on ctrl-alt-f2 rdesktop and shell on f3
I verify : it's seem with ps -ax that Xorg is :1.0 ???
Gadi : I've to leave. See you tomorow. THANKS for your help. THANKS very much
lapinmalin: im back
if Xorg is on :1, that's an issue
you need a graphical display on :0
or modify /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/rc.d/lbussd
|12:51||Shingoshi has quit IRC|
login as your admin user. Go to System > Administration > Login Setup
go to remote tab
change to Same as Local
then log out of gnome
ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a console
login as admin user
sudo /etc/init.d/gndm restart
sudo netstat -anp|grep :177
if you dont get a response, sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart again
(gdm can be flaky)
what about the lts.conf file?
SCREEN_07 = startx
thanks. as soon as I recover from this grub error 18 I'll giveit another go.
gotan error 18 when booting
and you got a grub error?
yes, Its in vmware
I have to create a small 100mb partition at the beginning of the disk.
the BIOS cant find thekernel
redoing grub now..
Gadi: Well %%&%& that didnt work. Guess I'll reinstall,again///
takes hours to reinstall in a VM to. Mayhave to wait til morning.
a5benwillis: no need to reinstall
not for grub
what steps did you take?
I booted thelive cd
marked sda,2 bootable
mounted my filesystem
is sda2 at the end or beginning?
Ihave this layout
it needs to be in the beginning of the disk
sda1(100mb), sd2(15gb etx3), sd3(600mb swap)
then 1 should be bootable
sda1 = bootable
format with ext3
then, mount it and copy /mnt/sda2/boot/* /mnt/sda1
or rather copy /mnt/sda2/boot /mnt/sda1
I'll give that a try
the live cd boots slow as christmas to lol
a5benwillis: the idea is you need to boot from sda1
beacuse sda1 is iwithin the first 1024 cylinders
some BIOSes (and evidently vmware) only see the first 1024 cylinders
so on large drives, if you installed the boot info after everything else, and you have 1 huge partition, the bits could be past the 1024th cylinder
and the BIOS doesnt see it, so grub doesn't find a kernel
by partitioning, ur forcing the boot info into the first 1024 cylinders
makes sense. havent seen it explained that way.
|13:27||* Gadi shrugs - engineers aint the best communicatators|
lol for sure
PS: most modern BIOSes don't have this issue
<--- supposed to be a network engineer lmao
at least thats my title.
if you ever get into booting from USB stick, you learn a lot about BIOSes
Gadi: cheers to that.
Iplayed around withit a few years ago
Gadi: booting from usb sticks is the devil.
bricode: but the devil is a sweet mistress
Gadi, network filesystems rarely have cylinders, i think that excuses him as network engineer
VMWARE needsto usgradet heir bios then :-)
Gadi: true story. It was painful getting the OLPC stack to do what I wanted on a usb key.
ogra: to BIOSes, *everything* has cylinders
even USB sticks! lol
my GF would object that ...
one day, when I get this ltspstuff working, I need to ask you guys about my multi grup boot issue. On my workstation :-)

you are right, at least i spoke enough in my life to get one :)

do /ns info jammcq

on etch you really should use ltsp5
... /msg nickserv info jammcq then
jammcq: ifconfig eth0 shows correct values but eth1 has no inet, Bcast, or Mask .. previously had them ..
give me a good excuse to do lwsf 8~)
other than th two jobs im holding down summers
jammcq: /etc/dhcpd.conf has eth1 with subnet 169.254.65.14 .. don't know why they dropped out of ltspcfg ..
Hmm .. I'll have to shew on it ..
astroboy, how did you install this ltsp on etch ?
apt-get .. ltspadmin .. http://ltsp.mirrors.tds.net/pub/ltsp/docs/ltsp-4.1-en.html#AEN320
jammcq, appratently debian recently added the ltsp-utils package .... you will get a lot of confusing support stuff with etch
yep .. ltsp-utils
didn't see any ltsp5
no, ltsp-server and ltsp-server-standalone are the ltsp5 packages ...
you shouldnt mix them with ltsp-utils (which is 4.2)
OK .. I'll apt-get them in ..
we dropped the 4.2 package from the ubuntu arechive last release because it caused so many problems ...
heh .. heh
now debian adds it at dawn of debians first ltsp5 release ... history repeats ...
and they dont even have the main/universe distinction so clever users could find out about it
how do i setup my local printer on ltsp workstation? i already included the PRINTER_0_DEVICE = /dev/usb/lp0 on /opt/ltsp/i386/ltsp.conf, but still no luck

hey, we'll be putting a tarball of the ubuntu bits up on the ltsp download site, for people to grab and install on any distro. I'd like to put a Debian tarball there as well. do you have such a tarball ?
or... maybe I can just build my own
i could build one, i suppose. though etch is still kinda a moving target.
I'm enjoying Etch ..
.. it borrows a lot from the Ubuntu gui
I'm a bit confused, using /opt/ltsp-4.2/i386/etc but having installed pkgs from ltsp5 such as ltsp-server ..
astroboy: merely installing the packages won't do anything, you need to run ltsp-build-client, and it won't overwrite your /opt/ltsp-4.2 directories or anything, but you'll have to configure it to use /opt/ltsp/* instead
OK .. I've done this before but it seems a long time ago ..
running ltsp-build-client now
|22:34||g333k_laptop has joined #ltsp|
impressive, a whole new distro .. which kernel is is using ?
actually, its not a new distro- that's the whole point!
on a debian system, the LTSP environment is a debian system, on an ubuntu system it's an ubuntu LTSP
Woops .. "error: LTSP client installation ended abnormally
" due to "Temporary failure resolving 'http.us.debian.org'
on on Suse, well...... it's either a debian or ubuntu ltsp :)
ltsp 4.x and older were effectively their own distros ... and that's a lot of work.
jammcq: yes, well... :)
and at this point, on Fedora..... it's debian or ubuntu ltsp :)
|22:49||* vagrantc has hope for gentoo|
yes, that'll be the 3rd one
fedora will be 4th
I might have to run it in the morning - my time - when connections are better.
astroboy: so, to answer your questions regarding the kernel, it's using the debian kernel :)
Thanks. I've been impressed with ltsp for a long time .. its just good to get it running and keep it stable.
well, the whole ltsp5 is adding a little instability for the moment...
I've got a demanding 82 yr old client who is hard to impress ..
W: http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz was corrupt
.. on next attempt
you might want to pick a specific mirror ... http.us.debian.org is sometimes a round-robin DNS and all the mirrors in the pool may not be perfectly in sync.
I'm just running 'ltsp-build-client
Bye for now ..
and i'm saying you might want to consider running "ltsp-build-client --mirror http://some-specific-mirror/debian
in fact, i usually build a local mirror using "reprepro" with only the packages i use :)
