Hi. Would someone recommend a minimal linux distro which is good for booting remote stations. Except LTSP.
03:56
I don't need client-server functionality - just need linux to run some linux tests and games
03:57
I've created one from my Debian etch installation but its no way a minimal one :)

And making it was a pain

I am no localdev specialist but I believe the drives only mount when you access them from the desktop side
04:56
the daemon checks every few secs for mount request
04:56
I believe the docs say as much

thanks Mistik1. But, for each WS i have two screens : one for a X server et one for a RDP connection. And if i want my usb stick on Windows, i need to mount it on ws.
05:55
I only test it on WS and on RDP connexion. Because i've got aonther pb for that : i use FREEBSD for the Applications Server

a5benwillis, so novell directory server?.i like ldap because the logging can be so profuse..
07:22
lapinmalin, id guess sbalneav and Gadi will be around shortly..Gadi i thin has done the seminal work on usb sticks and sound via rdesktop
07:23
<a5benwillis>
I wouldnt mind LDAP. Infact I use it on the novel side already for contextless login. But to use it to authenticate linux I'll have to populate each user with a unix uid, gid and home directory attribute. I have over 16,000 user accounts.

yes..pretty simple really..i build a csv with username year of graduation..password using perl or bash to create it ..then run the cvs through a script that uses a known good ldap record as a base..with one common password for all students...because
07:35
smbPasswdMustChange is set to 0 it forces pw change at first login
07:36
from windows..i also have a piece that inteerupts linux login if that same field is set to 0 and prompts for password change

cliebow: Sounds pretty slick. I also have all of these accounts in AD
07:46
Cliebow: But the users home directories allexist on novell servers. So I could authenticate against AD but I would still need to log into NDS to mount the HD.
07:46
cliebow:Im still testing xdmcp this morning. Hopefuly I can get it working soon.

I come back with my usb stick problem : when i insert a usb stick in the WS it's recognise with a new directory in /tmp/drives/ but this directory is empty. From RDP connexion i see this empty directory. From X applications server (FreeBSD) ican see anythink !
09:10
<sbalneav>
lapinmalin: So, it works from X?
09:10
<a5benwillis>
sbalneav: Im reinstalling my server this morning to try xdmcp, again.....

09:10
<sbalneav>
Why re-install?
09:11

no, it doesn't work from X !
09:11
<sbalneav>
Have you followed the checklist?

09:11
<ltspbot>
sbalneav: "checklist" is The checklist for debugging problems with local device access is at http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/LTSP-42-LocalDev#Troubleshooting. Please work through all 12 steps, record the results, and paste the results to the pastebot at http://pastebot.ltsp.org
09:11
<a5benwillis>
since I never could get xdmcp to workI figured I would reinstall afterall of the changes I had made trying to get NDS authentication working.
09:12
<lapinmalin>
it's ok til point 6
09:12
Resume points 1 2 3 4 5 6 8 OK
09:13
point 7 : how i install fuse with FreeBSD
09:13
<sbalneav>
Dunno.
09:13
That's for YOU to figure out.
09:13
I don't even know if fuse is supported under FreeBSD
09:14
<lapinmalin>
Other test : if i do : mount -a on WS, i can see the content of the directory ON the WS and on RDP connexion
09:14
<zald>
how do i bind the ltsp workstation ipaddress per user account?
09:14
<sbalneav>
I don't support local devices over RDP
09:15
Mainly because I don't have any RDP stuff here to try it out on.
09:15
<lapinmalin>
ok, so how can i do a mount -a automaticaly when a usb stick is insert ? Or is it stupid ?
09:16
<sbalneav>
Well, you'll have to get fuse working first.
09:17
But all of the binaries on the web page for the ltspfs stuff have been compiled for linux, so you'll have to re-compile those as well.
09:18
This page: http://fuse4bsd.creo.hu/ seems to indicate that fuse is available for FreeBSD in the ports collection, whatever that is.
09:18
<lapinmalin>
On freebsd port, i can install fuse
09:18
so i've to wget ltspfs to freebsd and compile it ?
09:19
For RDP connexion, i use gadi tar.gz : ltsp-rdp. Any help ?
09:20
<sbalneav>
Yes, you'd have to pull the ltspfs sources down from cvs, and re-compile them.
09:21
As for gadi's rdp stuff, you'd have to talk to him about it: I've got no way to test any of it here, so I just ignore Windows RDP :)
09:21
We don't use any windows here at work, so Bill Gates doesn't affect me at all :)
09:22
<lapinmalin>
I prefer to use Linux/UNIX but in our french school, some exam must be on BillSoftware :-(((((
09:22* jammcq just bought 2 dell desktop machines WITHOUT the microsoft tax :)
09:22
<lapinmalin>
When ltspfs is compile, what i have to do ? How can i check ? With the list ?
09:23
<a5benwillis>
sbalneav: Must benice to be fully liberated.
09:23
<cliebow>
arrrrrrgh..w 2003 server Sucks
09:24
<a5benwillis>
cliebow: Whats wrong?
09:24
Cliebow: Just open the cd tray and insert an envelope addressed to Bill Gates andit should work fine :-)
09:25
<sbalneav>
lapinmalin: Follow the ltsp4.2 localdev page. I know absolutely nothing about FreeBSD, so I have no idea where you'll need to insert start-up scripts.
09:25
<a5benwillis>
Oh, dont forgetto inclose money.
09:25
<sbalneav>
I'd personally recommend the following:
09:25
1) If you're planning on sticking with FreeBSD, do without local device support
09:25
<lapinmalin>
sbalneav : Thanks very much !!! I'll try now
09:25
<cliebow>
a5benwillis, arerrrrrrrrrrgh!!
09:26
<lapinmalin>
why whithout local device ?
09:26
<sbalneav>
2) If you need local device support, ditch FreeBSD and move to a linux platform that's supported.
09:26
<a5benwillis>
cliebow: What's wrong?
09:26
<sbalneav>
Because you're going to have to do a LOT of work to get it working.
09:26
and I won't be much help throughout it, as I don't know much about FreeBSD.
09:26
<lapinmalin>
I understand
09:27
<cliebow>
ooohhh.nothing really...i have to set mea testing and it is a pos java app that w2k3server doesnt want to play with...in the interest of SECURITY

13:00
<a5benwillis>
thanks. as soon as I recover from this grub error 18 I'll giveit another go.
13:00
<Gadi>
grub error?
13:01
<a5benwillis>
reinstalled edubuntu
13:01
gotan error 18 when booting
13:01
<Gadi>
and you got a grub error?
13:02
<a5benwillis>
yes, Its in vmware
13:02
I have to create a small 100mb partition at the beginning of the disk.
13:02
<Gadi>
right
13:03
the BIOS cant find thekernel
13:04
<a5benwillis>
redoing grub now..
13:18
Gadi: Well %%&%& that didnt work. Guess I'll reinstall,again///
13:18
takes hours to reinstall in a VM to. Mayhave to wait til morning.
13:19
<Gadi>
a5benwillis: no need to reinstall
13:19
not for grub
13:20
what steps did you take?
13:20
<a5benwillis>
I booted thelive cd
13:20
ran gparted
13:20
marked sda,2 bootable
13:20
mounted my filesystem
13:20
ran grub-install
13:20
/dev/sda
13:20
<Gadi>
is sda2 at the end or beginning?
13:21
<a5benwillis>
middle
13:21
Ihave this layout
13:21
<Gadi>
it needs to be in the beginning of the disk
13:21
<a5benwillis>
sda1(100mb), sd2(15gb etx3), sd3(600mb swap)
13:21
<Gadi>
good
13:21
then 1 should be bootable
13:22
sda1 = bootable
13:22
<a5benwillis>
sda1 isunformatted
13:22
<Gadi>
format with ext3
13:22
then, mount it and copy /mnt/sda2/boot/* /mnt/sda1
13:23
or rather copy /mnt/sda2/boot /mnt/sda1
13:24
<a5benwillis>
I'll give that a try
13:25
the live cd boots slow as christmas to lol
13:25
<Gadi>
a5benwillis: the idea is you need to boot from sda1
13:25
beacuse sda1 is iwithin the first 1024 cylinders
13:25
<a5benwillis>
oh ok
13:25
<Gadi>
some BIOSes (and evidently vmware) only see the first 1024 cylinders
13:26
so on large drives, if you installed the boot info after everything else, and you have 1 huge partition, the bits could be past the 1024th cylinder
13:26
and the BIOS doesnt see it, so grub doesn't find a kernel
13:27
by partitioning, ur forcing the boot info into the first 1024 cylinders
13:27
<a5benwillis>
makes sense. havent seen it explained that way.
13:27* Gadi shrugs - engineers aint the best communicatators
13:27
<Gadi>
:)
13:27
<a5benwillis>
lol for sure
13:27
<Gadi>
PS: most modern BIOSes don't have this issue
13:27
<a5benwillis>
<--- supposed to be a network engineer lmao
13:28
at least thats my title.
13:28
hehe
13:28

13:28
if you ever get into booting from USB stick, you learn a lot about BIOSes
13:28
<bricode>
Gadi: cheers to that.
13:28
<a5benwillis>
Iplayed around withit a few years ago
13:28
knoppix?
13:29
<bricode>
Gadi: booting from usb sticks is the devil.
13:29
<Gadi>
bricode: but the devil is a sweet mistress
13:29
<ogra>
Gadi, network filesystems rarely have cylinders, i think that excuses him as network engineer
13:29
:)
13:29
<a5benwillis>
VMWARE needsto usgradet heir bios then :-)
13:29
<bricode>
Gadi: true story. It was painful getting the OLPC stack to do what I wanted on a usb key.
13:29
<Gadi>
ogra: to BIOSes, *everything* has cylinders
13:30
even USB sticks! lol
13:30

15:31
didn't see any ltsp5
15:32
<ogra>
no, ltsp-server and ltsp-server-standalone are the ltsp5 packages ...
15:32
you shouldnt mix them with ltsp-utils (which is 4.2)
15:33
<astroboy>
OK .. I'll apt-get them in ..
15:33
<ogra>
we dropped the 4.2 package from the ubuntu arechive last release because it caused so many problems ...
15:33
<astroboy>
heh .. heh
15:33
<ogra>
now debian adds it at dawn of debians first ltsp5 release ... history repeats ...
15:34
and they dont even have the main/universe distinction so clever users could find out about it
15:35
<zald>
how do i setup my local printer on ltsp workstation? i already included the PRINTER_0_DEVICE = /dev/usb/lp0 on /opt/ltsp/i386/ltsp.conf, but still no luck
15:38
PRINTER_0_TYPE = U
15:38
<astroboy>
/etc/dhcp3/dhcpd.conf line 22: semicolon expected.

15:38
<ogra>
zald, try /dev/usblp0
15:39
<astroboy>
.. should that be 'subnet:' ?
15:39
<ogra>
zald, and /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/lts.conf is the right path ...

hey, we'll be putting a tarball of the ubuntu bits up on the ltsp download site, for people to grab and install on any distro. I'd like to put a Debian tarball there as well. do you have such a tarball ?
22:04
or... maybe I can just build my own
22:04
<vagrantc>
i could build one, i suppose. though etch is still kinda a moving target.
22:12
<astroboy>
I'm enjoying Etch ..
22:13
.. it borrows a lot from the Ubuntu gui
22:15
I'm a bit confused, using /opt/ltsp-4.2/i386/etc but having installed pkgs from ltsp5 such as ltsp-server ..
22:24
<vagrantc>
astroboy: merely installing the packages won't do anything, you need to run ltsp-build-client, and it won't overwrite your /opt/ltsp-4.2 directories or anything, but you'll have to configure it to use /opt/ltsp/* instead
22:25
<astroboy>
OK .. I've done this before but it seems a long time ago ..

impressive, a whole new distro .. which kernel is is using ?
22:47
<vagrantc>
actually, its not a new distro- that's the whole point!
22:48
on a debian system, the LTSP environment is a debian system, on an ubuntu system it's an ubuntu LTSP
22:48
<astroboy>
Woops .. "error: LTSP client installation ended abnormally
22:48
" due to "Temporary failure resolving 'http.us.debian.org'
22:48
"
22:48
<jammcq>
on on Suse, well...... it's either a debian or ubuntu ltsp :)
22:48
<vagrantc>
ltsp 4.x and older were effectively their own distros ... and that's a lot of work.
22:48
jammcq: yes, well... :)
22:49
<jammcq>
and at this point, on Fedora..... it's debian or ubuntu ltsp :)
22:49* vagrantc has hope for gentoo
22:49
<jammcq>
yes, that'll be the 3rd one
22:49
fedora will be 4th
22:51
<astroboy>
I might have to run it in the morning - my time - when connections are better.
22:53
<vagrantc>
astroboy: so, to answer your questions regarding the kernel, it's using the debian kernel :)
22:58
<astroboy>
Thanks. I've been impressed with ltsp for a long time .. its just good to get it running and keep it stable.
23:01
<vagrantc>
well, the whole ltsp5 is adding a little instability for the moment...
23:02
<astroboy>
I've got a demanding 82 yr old client who is hard to impress ..
23:06
W: http://http.us.debian.org/debian/dists/etch/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz was corrupt
23:07
.. on next attempt
23:08
<vagrantc>
you might want to pick a specific mirror ... http.us.debian.org is sometimes a round-robin DNS and all the mirrors in the pool may not be perfectly in sync.
23:09
<astroboy>
I'm just running 'ltsp-build-client
23:09
'
23:09
Bye for now ..
23:09
<vagrantc>
and i'm saying you might want to consider running "ltsp-build-client --mirror http://some-specific-mirror/debian
23:09
"
23:13
<astroboy>
Thx
23:18
<vagrantc>
in fact, i usually build a local mirror using "reprepro" with only the packages i use :)
