Has anyone used the kubuntu alternate cd to install an ltsp server? In the boot screen, there *isn't* an F4 option to install an ltsp server, but it's there in the debian-installer steps...???!!!

<vlt>
Hello. After changing the server IP: Is `ltsp-update-sshkeys` sufficient or do I have to `ltsp-update-image`, too?
14:47
<alkisg>
You also need ltsp-update-image
14:48
<vlt>
alkisg: Thank you.
14:48
<alkisg>
np
14:49
<Eghie>
hello
14:50
to make USB disk mounting work in LTSP (with Ubuntu intrepid) you need FUSE rights
14:50
but it is really some work to add every user to the FUSE group
14:50
because we use LDAP as user database
14:50
and the system groups are in /etc/group
14:50
now I did chmod a+rw /dev/fuse
14:51
and that works
14:51
but is that the correct way?
14:51
and will it survive a reboot?
14:56
<Egyptian[Home]>
Eghie: i suspect ...not sure .. but you may have to play with udev rules to make it stick ..
14:57
of course try a reboot first to check
14:57
<Eghie>
yeah, but they are using it now
14:58
and the testing server I have not at hand now
15:01
ah man, NSCD sucks
15:01
it crashes when run as daemon, mostly in a couple of minutes
15:02
now I run it in a screen terminal in debugging mode and now it is behaving itself :S
15:07
<Egyptian[Home]>
Eghie: nscd? what distro are you using?
15:07* Egyptian[Home] prays it isnt suse
15:09
<Eghie>
your prayers have been answered
15:09
it is Ubuntu Intrepid
15:14
I guess I should try UNSCD (from busybox): http://busybox.net/~vda/unscd/
15:18
do LTSP and SUSE have problems with each other?
15:23
<Egyptian[Home]>
no
15:23
i just haste suse
15:23
i prefer fedora /rhel
15:24
<Eghie>
lol
15:27
<vagrantc>
OpenSuSE has implemented things very differently from other distros with kiwi-ltsp ...
15:34
<Eghie>
why?
15:35
I guess they do have a reason for that
15:35
if they are good reasons, that's another matter though
15:43
<vagrantc>
some of them are good reasons, some of them don't seem to be so

<Ryan52>
wow, stgraber is fast.
19:22* Ryan52 wonders why stgraber subscribed him..
19:24
<stgraber>
ldm gtk thingy, thought you might know
19:24
and some people tend to redirect indirect subscription to bugmail to /dev/null
19:25
<Ryan52>
heh. ok.

<Gadi>
stgraber: have you been using your localapps menu stuff in a test environment?
20:18
<stgraber>
production actually :)
20:18
<Gadi>
:)
20:18
would you like to test my ltsp-genmenu?
20:18
:D
20:18
<stgraber>
sure, where is it and what did you change ?
20:19
<Gadi>
I'll pastebot it - it replaces menu items from the main menu rather than having a local app submenu
20:19
(hopefully)
20:19
:)
20:19
<stgraber>
good, I was planning to do that :)
20:19
it's one of the things we discussed with ogra at UDS
20:19
<Gadi>
also, I add LOCAL_APPS_MENU_ITEMS lts.conf var
20:19
which allows the admin to specify only certain apps to be overridden
20:20
<stgraber>
I was planning that too :) with ltsp-cluster we have hardware groups so we can use that lts.conf parameter to filter local applications depending on the hardware
20:20
<ltsppbot>
"Gadi" pasted "ltsp-genmenu" (88 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/177
20:21
<Gadi>
it basically works off of .desktop files in /usr/share/applications
20:21
so, if you have other apps that you want to add, put a .desktop file there
20:23
<stgraber>
any reason not to use ltsp-localapps ?
20:23
<Gadi>
for what?
20:23
<stgraber>
TryExec=
20:24
<Gadi>
oh, this way no need for server side executable
20:24
(other than xprop)
20:24
so, you can terminal into a random server and still get localapps working
20:24
without installing a localapps package on that app server
20:24
<stgraber>
hmm, ok, makes sense. (I plan to ship ltsp-localapps with ldminfod so it'll be there in most setup but not all)
20:25
<Gadi>
right - this goes back to our conversation of having an "app server" package
20:25
:)
20:25
<stgraber>
yeah
20:25
about the icons, shouldn't we handle them like the .desktop and do a backup if they already existt ?
20:25
<Gadi>
but, the fewer server-side packages *required* the better
20:26
hmm
20:26
I guess

Gadi: i really liked "Call ltspfs_entry remove if we fail to mount the device, so we don't end up with an ltspfsmount to tmpfs."
22:01* vagrantc does bayesean training with Gadi

Gadi: although, now that i think of it, removing the device if it fails to mount will break floppies ...
22:04
guess we could special-case floppies...

does it break cdroms, too?

shouldn't, as cdpinger is run on insertion/removal

<vagrantc>
would it make sense to have a floppy pinger?
22:07
no... no...
22:07
then you'd have the floppy drives spinning up periodically just to check if a floppy was there...
22:08* vagrantc can't wait till floppy disks are totally and utterly obsolete
