I know I've asked about hosting LTSP in Azure/AWS before and last time the response was that no-one had tried it but it wasn't recommended. Has anything changed? ie has someine tried doing this since I last asked?
12:49
I know it would require at leas a local DHCP server
12:51
<highvoltage>
you could probably host a rootfs there but the question would just be 'why?' since it would certainly have a lot worse latency than having that stored somewhere locally
12:52
<danboid>
My employer is trying to avoid using locally hosted servers, its "cloud first"
13:00
<highvoltage>
ah yes I remember you now, yeah nothing has changed in physics or computer science since you last asked, having your root filesystem on somewhere on the internet is still not a good idea
13:00
<danboid>
Haha :)

danboid: in my schools I have a grub/ipxe option "boot from the I.T. support office LTSP server", which they can use an boot over the internet, when their local installation fails and they need troubleshooting and they don't have a live cd etc
14:10
It's been working fine for ages. And yeah, it's still extremely slow; 10 mbps with a lot of latency isn't really appropriate as a root file system, it's like trying to boot windows 10 from floppy disks or something

<alkisg>
danboid: what might make sense though, would be to have a tiny local OS, enough to boot and then remote-desktop into an aws instance
15:13
E.g. raspberry with xfreerdp or sshvnc

15:14
<alkisg>
...well, you could also netboot that tiny os, it wouldn't take long to netboot it

alkisg, Nah, x86 fat clients it is

<||cw>
if you have gigabit link and <2ms latency to AWS, thin clients on AWS would probably work fine.
16:47
I get about 20ms to one aws region on my 20Mbit fiber.
16:54
<mmarconm>
||cw: are u using ltsp on aws ?
17:03
<||cw>
no, but I can see a use case for it. bandwidth and latency matter a lot, so picking the right region is important, and being "close enough" to that region is a make or break point.

I just installed a program using snap for the first time. I updated the image and my users cannot run the program.

<JuJUBee>
It seems that /snap/bin is not mounted for the ltsp users on login?
17:45
<||cw>
is it a separate mount? you'll need to add an FSTAB_ param for it
17:46
first thing I do is uninstall snap :P
17:48
<alkisg>
JuJUBee: which ltsp version?
17:51
<JuJUBee>
ltsp-server 5.18.12
17:51
<alkisg>
Try with the new one it should work
17:52
!install
17:52
<ltspbot>
install: To install LTSP: https://ltsp.org/docs/installation/
17:53
<JuJUBee>
Will the install pick up all of my current configs?
17:53
<alkisg>
You mean lts.conf? No, it's a completely different ltsp
17:54
<JuJUBee>
Is there any way to correct this in my current version? I don't want to be messing mid-year...
17:54
<alkisg>
You would need to backport the fix
17:54
<JuJUBee>
Out of my wheelhouse...
17:54
<alkisg>
I don't want to waste time with the old ltsp, but I'm also available for hire if you like
17:55
<JuJUBee>
It is not a critical app, there is another option, so I will wait for summer.
17:55
<alkisg>
Sure
