<major_ghz>
hello
00:19
how can i connect a client to my ltsp server under internet ?
00:25
<vagrantc>
what exactly do you mean?
00:27
you'll typically need to set up firewalling and NX, VNC, RDP or some other protocol to get access to your server, if you want a graphical interface
00:27
over the internet
00:27
for a text interface, ssh works pretty well
00:27
graphical is possible with ssh oveer the internet, but has some serious latency issues
00:28
booting a thin client over the internet, while possible, has even more serious latency issues
00:28
not to mention security
00:29
ltsp is mainly about network booted clients, but only really on the local network. but there's nothing stopping you from using other available technologies to connect to your LTSP- it's just a computer like any other.
00:29
connect to your LTSP server, that is
00:37
<major_ghz>
re
00:39
connect simply a thin client on my ltsp server on internet, yes
00:41
vagrantc, ?

<vagrantc>
major_ghz: you'd be better off running a local OS and using a technology appropriate to connecting over the internet
00:47gbaman has left IRC (gbaman!~gbaman@host81-134-114-61.in-addr.btopenworld.com, Ping timeout: 260 seconds)
00:47
<vagrantc>
major_ghz: you mean give internet access to the thin client?
00:48
major_ghz: both client and server on local lan?
00:48
<major_ghz>
i have an local os, but i would like test an ltsp server over internet
00:50
00:51
<vagrantc>
major_ghz: if you just want to test the ltsp server remotely, i'd use libvirt and virt-manager and use a virtual thin client running on the server...
00:56
<major_ghz>
over internet
00:56
i would like test over internet
00:58
<vagrantc>
i don't know what you mean by test over internet
00:58
LTSP doesn't run over the internet, so i don't know what you would test
00:58
<major_ghz>
the same as an local network with thin client but over internet
00:59
ok, i can't user ltsp over internet
00:59
<vagrantc>
i mean, you technically could try to do all that over the internet, but it'd be very slow
00:59
*very* slow
01:00
<major_ghz>
an os can use in the mode client server like it but can used over internet ?
01:01
<vagrantc>
technically possible, but probably a bad idea.
01:01
but i'm not sure i really understand what you're asking...
01:01
<major_ghz>
too much slowly ?
01:01
<vagrantc>
very much slowly. wow.
01:02
why do you want to test over the internet?
01:03
what are you trying to test?
01:03
<major_ghz>
my english will be bad when need sleeping
01:03
<vagrantc>
no worries :)
01:04
<major_ghz>
juste want some thin client and only one server administrate
01:04
<vagrantc>
english is the only language i know at all well, and my biggest problem is having the courage to try :)
01:05
<major_ghz>
but the client are not in the local
01:05
<vagrantc>
you'd be better off connecting to your server with some protocol designed for use on the internet
01:05
<major_ghz>
not possible ?
01:05
<vagrantc>
NX or VNC
01:06
maybe others
01:06
but that's not really LTSP
01:06
<major_ghz>
you can say more about nx and vnc ?
01:06
<vagrantc>
major_ghz: not useable, but possible :)
01:06
i don't know much about them, but it sounds like what you need :)
01:07
<major_ghz>
not useable ? ok not os or system can do that i like
01:07
thank for your time

<gdi2k_>
alkisg, Sorry to bother you again! I would like to explore fixing LTSP clients to specific servers by default (using their MAC addresses) - the user would manually select the other server on the PXE menu in the event of a failure. This can be done with dnsmasq's PXE menus, but during boot, the client does a second DHCP request which determines the all important nbd root server, and either of the two dnsmasq servers may respond with their respective IP, so it
03:52
may or may not end up on the server originally selected in the PXE menu. Is that correct?
03:53
<alkisg>
No, it's not correct because you're using ipappend 3
03:53
So the client doesn't do a second dhcp request, it reuses the first one
03:53
<gdi2k_>
ah ok nice! :)
03:54
thanks for all your help - are you anywhere near Athens? I may be going to Porto Rafti June, would love to buy you a beer or 3 for all your troubles

Cool! I'm 6 hours away from athens, but it's possible that I would be there at that time for vacations, so feel free to PM me then if you want

03:55

cool, sounds good, will do!

<alkisg>
Hi
07:46
demoTN: speak here, don't use personal messages
07:46
<demoTN>
sorry
07:48
I've got a lab with 25 fatclient ubuntu and a server epoptes (teacher pc)
07:49
but when I try command "epoptes-client -c 192.168.20.160" from ltsp-chroot on ltsp-server
07:49
the error is "epoptes-client ERROR: Failed to fetch certificate from 192.168.20.160:789"
07:49
<alkisg>
The ltsp server is also the epoptes server?
07:50
Tell me the ip of the ltsp server, and the ip of the epoptes server
07:50
<demoTN>
no, epoptes server is the teacher's pc
07:50
<alkisg>
Is the teacher pc an ltsp client?
07:50
<demoTN>
ltsp-server 192.168.20.10, epoptes-server 192.168.20.160
07:50
no, teacher's pc is the epoptes server
07:52
<alkisg>
OK. In the teacher's PC, what is the output of "sudo netstat -tanp|grep 789" ?
07:53
<demoTN>
on ltsp-chroot "tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:789 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1960/python"
07:53
<alkisg>
Not on the chroot, epoptes shouldn't be installed in the chroot
07:54
epoptes-client to the chroot, and epoptes to the teacher pc
07:54
and epoptes-client to the ltsp server
