could you post your lts.conf to the pastebin:

fairly straight forward lts.conf, similar to what i was using successfully with 11.10 and rdesktop
00:11* vagrantc is unfamiliar with rdesktop/xfreerdp unfortunately
00:12
<vagrantc>
atamakosi: so without that, it just boots to LDM juts fine?
00:12
atamakosi: there have been a few threads on the ltsp-discuss mailing lists recently regarding xfreerdp ... you might search for the archives
00:15
<atamakosi>
yep, if i kill out the lts.conf completely it has no problem booting to the LDM
00:15
I've ran xfreerdp with those arguments so I believe they should pass to the client without issue
00:16
but it only gets so far as displaying 'ubuntu' and the loading dots underneath, then no further
00:17
but not completely locked/frozen as i can restart the machine using cad
00:22
<vagrantc>
atamakosi: this patch to the screen.d script might help: http://pastebin.com/c4uZps8q
00:23
atamakosi: you'll need to apply it to /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/screen.d/xfreerdp and re-run ltsp-update-image
00:23
atamakosi: that was a recent fix upstream.
00:28
<atamakosi>
gonna try it now...
00:28
<vagrantc>
if that fixes it, that should probably get into a stable release update for ubuntu.
00:29
there are a few other SRUs in the works for LTSP on Ubuntu
00:35
<atamakosi>
la la la, waiting on rebuild...
00:36
update done
00:36
*crosses fingers*
00:38
no good
00:38
<vagrantc>
that's my best guess.
00:42
<atamakosi>
actually, there is improvement!
00:42
just restarted the thin client a few times to make sure it wasn't a one-off freeze
00:42
looks like it actually boots past the splash screen now
00:43
it however just shows a white cursor on black background. which i've seen before and know there is a fix
00:43
whoo!
00:46
thanks, vagrantc, i've wrestled this for weeks. our students and teachers will be happy to have this working again

Hey all
06:13
Anyone know of any ltsp issues involving pulseaudio 2.0 in Debian distros? I've got 2 chroots - one i386 and one amd64 (neither are fatclient) and the amd64 chroot has been updated with pa 2.0 packages. Since then it seems as though I can't get sound at all from my amd64 client.
06:14
Running Debian Wheezy
06:17
been searching around and troubleshooting but can't figure it out. My ltsp-server's pa daemon.conf was modified near the time it started happening though, even though i didn't tell it to replace my existing config files something changed so..

I've upgraded my i386 chroot as a troubleshooting step but sound still works afterwards.. and building a completely new amd64 chroot doesn't fix the amd64 chroot's audio problem. even tried with different / new users

<Hyperbyte>
Lns, don't troubleshoot pulseaudio on the server
07:21
Troubleshoot it on the clients.
07:21
The pulseaudio daemon on the server isn't used by LTSP, since all sound is played through the client.
07:22Phantomas has left IRC (Phantomas!~Phantomas@unaffiliated/phantomas, Quit: Leaving.)
07:22
<Hyperbyte>
Start by running 'pactl info' in a local xterm, see if pulseaudio on the clients is working.
07:33
<Lns>
Hyperbyte, ok hold on
07:35
Hyperbyte, it gives me a bunch of info so i'm assuming it's running
07:35
i've got to sleep but if you have suggestions i'll read in the morning..thank you..this is a weird prob
07:35
<alkisg>
map7: are you the one that filed the bug report in epoptes about shift?
07:36
(10:21:49 πμ) Hyperbyte: The pulseaudio daemon on the server isn't used by LTSP, since all sound is played through the client. => the server pulseaudio is used, it's the one that sends the audio
07:36
...and of course the client pulseaudio receives it over the network
07:38
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, are you sure?
07:38
<alkisg>
Hyperbyte: how would the audio be sent then?
07:39
The client sets some environment variables for the server pulseaudio to read them
07:39
So all apps that start read them and use them to send the audio to the clients
07:39
If you stop pulseaudio on the server, and e.g. use alsa, the apps won't send any audio over the network...
07:40khildin has joined IRC (khildin!~khildin@ip-83-134-215-206.dsl.scarlet.be)
07:40
<Hyperbyte>
You're contradicting yourself a little. First you're saying the pulseaudio daemon on the server, sends audio to the pulseaudio daemon on the client. And now you say pulseaudio applications on the server, directly send to the client.
07:40
If I look at my system, the latter is definitely the case. There is no pulseaudio daemon running on the server even.
07:40
<alkisg>
Applications use sound libraries
07:41
<Hyperbyte>
Right
07:41
<alkisg>
The pulseaudio library reads the environment variables
07:41
And knows where to send the audio
07:41
<Hyperbyte>
Those libraries send to the daemon on the client.
07:41
<alkisg>
That's the server
07:41
<Hyperbyte>
The daemon on the server isn't used in my setup.
07:42
Lns was talking about his pulseaudio daemon config on the server. I'm saying, that isn't used by LTSP - the first step is to check the daemon is running properly on the client.
07:42
<alkisg>
Ah, you mean the daemon, not pulseaudio in general. Well, the pulseaudio libraries don't use any configuration files?
07:42
/etc/pulse/client.conf
07:42
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, sure they do - I was just giving Lns some first thing to check, and then you jumped me. :P
07:43* alkisg hugs Hyperbyte and asks for forgiveness :D
07:43
<Hyperbyte>
With the pulseaudio over network stuff, I'd say it's easier to check if pulseaudio works locally first, and then see if it works over network. :)
07:43
In case of problems.
07:44
Lns, either way... the 'pactl info' command connects to the pulseaudio server (on the client), and shows status. If you run it in a local xterm, it makes a local connection. Next step is to run it in a remote xterm on the server, see if it can also connect remotely. Find me later, when you wake up... we can walk through it. :)
07:44* Hyperbyte hugs alkisg back

Since lease renewal probably won't work, should we put 8h or 12h there? I think it's a bit safer...
18:34
<vagrantc>
alkisg: seems good.
18:34
<alkisg>
vagrantc: also, did the update-kernels commits change the default behavior? I'd like to try a new ltsp build on some schools in a few days...
18:34
<vagrantc>
alkisg: see my update-kernels commits? :)
18:35
<alkisg>
I only saw that they were many :P Didn't have time to read any contents or commit messages :D
18:35
<vagrantc>
alkisg: basically, i generate a single "ltsp" with all the options, and then separate ltsp-* for each of the feature combinations
18:35bengoa has left IRC (bengoa!~bengoa@alberto.propus.com.br)

alkisg: so the default can have all the options, but if someone wants to restrict it, they can set it to the defaults.
18:36
er, they can select only the features they want
18:36
<alkisg>
We just started shipping sch-scripts alphas this morning (13 bugs so far), and in a few days we'll be deploying to many schools and doing a workshop about them, so till then my ltsp time is very limited :(
18:37
<vagrantc>
alkisg: it also means that the server-side-pxemenus interface can look for ltsp-*NFS or ltsp-*NBD in order to figure out which options to enable.
18:37
so it doesn't need to parse commandline options, the filenames themselves should be descriptive enough.

18:37
<vagrantc>
alkisg: i was pondering switching the default away from unversioned kernel symlinks, though.
18:38
alkisg: yes.
18:38
<alkisg>
Cool, /me does a recipe build and will look at the generated files when it's done
18:38
<vagrantc>
it's by default one more tftp hit (pxelinux.cfg/default + pxelinux.cfg/ltsp) but that shouldn't be too bad.
18:39
oh, and memtest ... at which point i wonder if we shhouldn't ditch the memtest support,, it looks out of place.

18:48
<andygraybeal>
cool. i'm looking forward to your blessings and i'll start playing with it in 12.04 :)
18:48
<alkisg>
andygraybeal: you don't have a reason to wait, you won't be using our sch-scripts package :) Many people have switched to 12.04 already.
18:48
You might hit a few problems but I don't think there's anything critical
18:49
<andygraybeal>
idon't want to upgrade either, i want to do fresh install

Or try with a different dist name

I just saw your last post. I'll try that. Thanks!

So the mint developers used their own code name, but they didn't include debootstrap support for it

I'm thinking it will be ubuntu. We tried precise straight up but our needs preclude Unity. So, 'fall back' to Mint and use Mate to get a gnome-ish world our users can deal with. We'll see how it works. Mint might be moving farther from ubuntu than I thought it had. It's getting to be a confusing world, ltsp.
19:34
<vagrantc>
ltsp is straightforward, distros are crazy.
19:35
<alkisg>
cfkane: have you tried gnome-session-fallback on plain Ubuntu?
19:35
!gnome-fallback
19:35
<ltsp_>
alkisg: gnome-fallback: Unity, compiz etc are sometimes slow or buggy. To select gnome-fallback as your default session, install the gnome-session-fallback package, and put this in your lts.conf: LDM_SESSION="gnome-session --session=gnome-fallback"
19:39
<cfkane>
No. FYI I meant 'fall back' meaning I viewed Mint as a (close) derivative of ubuntu and we could use it as a secondary distro choice if ubuntu/unity drove us crazy. :)
19:40
<alkisg>
Sure. Personally I couldn't get used to Unity, so I selected gnome-session-fallback because it's like the UI of 10.04

I have what I think is the final issue. the chroot built fine and dhcp is giving a client an authenticated IP address but the clinet boot then stops with a 'ARP Timeout' error. I haven't changed any IP settings but I did ltsp-update-sshkeys and ltsp-update-image again, to no effect. /etc/default/tftpd-hpa is the same as in our functioning ltsp server. Might this be from mixing distros (Mint server/ubuntu chroot)?
21:29
<alkisg>
"the clinet boot then stops with a 'ARP Timeout' error" => so it doesn't even load pxelinux.0, right?
21:29
If so, it's not related to the mint/ubuntu mix, it's a plain tftp or dhcp issue

Fixed the tftp issue! In dhcpd.conf there was a 'next-server...' entry for the client network. On a hunch I commented that out and re-started dhcp. Bingo. It's Ubuntu chroot, vagrantc, as I expected.
21:50
I lied. It's just the ubuntu splash screen. when I log in it's Mint Maya desktop. Apologies.
