<frederickjh>
Hi all! Just testing a server that I am getting ready to put into service. I tried to boot it without a network cable and it would not boot all the way. This on Ubuntu 14.04.4 with PNP-LTSP.
14:02
After boot the black and white text screen says:
14:05
BusyBox v1.21.1 (Ubuntu 1:1.21.0-1ubuntu1) built-in shell (ash)
14:06
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.
14:06
(initramfs)
14:07
If I plug in a network cable and type exit it will then reboot, OK to the login screen.
14:07
Is this normal?
14:07
I never seen a Ubuntu or Linux that will not boot to the login without a network connection before.
14:21
<alkisg>
frederickjh: what is your ltsp-server version? dpkg-query -W ltsp-server
14:22
And, `cat /proc/cmdline`
14:24
<frederickjh>
ltsp-server 5.5.5~r2703+p1238+201512091628~ubuntu14.04.1
14:25
<alkisg>
And the output of: cat /proc/cmdline
14:25
<frederickjh>
BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.2.0-34-generic root=/dev/mapper/henderson--ltsp-root_file_system ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7

alkisg-todo: (#1) support xnbd-proxy for local caching: https://bitbucket.org/hirofuchi/xnbd/wiki/Home#!scenario-2-simple-proxy-server-distributed-copy-on-write, or (#2) Support UEFI, or (#3) support for per-user login commands in lts.conf, or (#4) put panic=60 in the kernel cmdline, or (#5) simplify cmdline checks, e.g. ltsp.init=/sbin/init-ltsp instead of "ltsp"
14:25
<alkisg>
That (#5) there affects you
14:26
I fixed it this morning, I may push the change later on tonight
14:26
Can you file a bug report about it?
14:26
!ltsp-bug
14:26
<ltsp>
ltsp-bug: To file a bug report for upstream LTSP, go to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp
14:27
<alkisg>
The problem is that you have "ltsp" in your disk name
14:27
It confuses the ltsp boot scripts into thinking that this is an ltsp client
14:28
<frederickjh>
Oh,
14:28
If you fixed why should I file a bug report?
14:28
<alkisg>
I didn't push the commit because I'll have to convince the debian maintainer that it's better to break compatibility in this case
14:29
The bug report will help me convince him :)
14:29
<frederickjh>
Gotcha!
14:29
So there is not a bug report open on this already?
14:30
<alkisg>
No

<frederickjh>
What information do I give to prove that the ltsp in the volume name is causing the computer to hang at boot?
14:33
<alkisg>
# cat /proc/cmdline
14:33
BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-4.2.0-34-generic root=/dev/mapper/my--ltsp-root_file_system ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7
14:33
That, along with the symptoms you're seeing, should be enough
14:35* alkisg waves, later...

14:37
<||cw>
is it the "--" that's the problem?
15:00
<frederickjh>
alkisg thinks it is the ltsp in the volume name that makes it think it is a ltsp client booting and then hangs because it has no network connection. When we are booting the ltsp server.
15:07
root_file_system is the name of the LVM logical volume that is root of the file system. henderson-ltsp is the volume group name on the server that the LV belongs to.

frederickjh: did you file a bug report? do you know how to apply a patch?
15:22
<frederickjh>
Just finished, the 2nd time.
15:23
First time it time out. Had to type it again.
15:23
ltsp in the device name on the LTSP server causes boot to hang https://bugs.launchpad.net/ltsp/+bug/1562911
15:23
yes
15:23
<alkisg>
Ouch, didn't "back" in firefox show the typed message? anyway, let me get you the .diff..
15:23
<frederickjh>
no
15:24
I was in chrome and it just went back to the create a new bug report. Where you enter the description.
15:29
<alkisg>
OK, I pushed the commit, you can find the diff in the linked URL
15:29
(I commented in the bug report)
15:29
<frederickjh>
Normally I can go back in chrome
15:29
Ok
15:29
Will something like patch -p1 < path/file.patch work?
15:30
<alkisg>
client/Debian/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-premount/udhcp
15:30
You basically care about one line in that file, see the commend and link there
15:30
You can simply use nano, it's probably easier for 1 line
15:30
The rest of the files don't matter much in your specific case
15:30
<frederickjh>
OK
15:31
<alkisg>
In the real system, that's in /usr/share/initramfs/scripts/init-premount-udhcp
15:32
<frederickjh>
On my system it seems to be /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-premount/udhcp
15:33
Does that sound correct?
15:33
<alkisg>
I mentioned two paths, the first path was the source tree path, the second the installed path
15:33
Whoops
15:33
Sorry, yes, I mistyped
15:33
<frederickjh>
OK
15:33
<alkisg>
What you said is correct
15:34
<frederickjh>
I wondered when nano presented a black file to edit.
15:34
So I did some digging.
15:37
Ok, I manually applied the patch on line 44. I guess it is time to unplug the network cable and reboot to test.
15:38
<alkisg>
frederickjh: did you run update-initramfs -u?
15:40
<frederickjh>
nope, thats why i did not work.
15:40
Will do.
15:43
Ok, I confirm that the patch works here.
15:43
Thanks again for your help alkisg!
15:44
I want to do some stuff outside too today. Catch you later.

vagrantc: yup, if it was matching the "-w" part (word boundary)
19:06
But note that I dropped the "ltsp" parameter completely,
19:06
so if you (or anyone) had any setups that relied on this, they should be changed to ltsp.init=/sbin/init-ltsp
19:07
I also replaced the chroot method with an indirect setting of initramfs' tools $init variable

vagrantc: another idea that I had is that we provide the sysvinit/upstart/systemd ltsp-core jobs in /usr/share/ltsp, and we symlink them by some init-ltsp.d script

That way they don't even exist when an ltsp-pnp server boots
