Hello, can somebody, please, help me with openSUSE 12.3 x64 and kiwi-ltsp? It was working fine, but since a system update the client only boots up a part and then reboots after displaying incorrect kernel version.
12:48
Sad to say, but in #kiwi-ltsp noone is present, and in #suse also noone answers.

Hello! Does anybody else experience very poor performance when viewing/scrolling pdf files in evince? I am using ubuntu 14.04 lts. When scrolling in the document I see about 600Mbit/s going over network, that’s insane!

14:30work_alkisg is now known as alkisg
14:30
<alkisg>
!flash
14:30
<ltsp`>
flash: Yes, flash sucks. An HD full screen 30 fps video needs 2.5 Gbps bandwidth (1920×1080×4×30)! Make sure you have LDM_DIRECTX=True in your lts.conf file, or if it's just youtube you're after, try some flash replacing plugin like http://linterna-magica.nongnu.org
14:30
<alkisg>
schlady: ^
14:31
Sure pdf is not flash, just to get an idea why remote desktop is so heavy for the network
14:31
Where applicable, do prefer diskless ltsp fat clients instead of thins...
14:33
<schlady>
Yes, this was also the solution I proposed - going to fat diskless clients.
14:33
<alkisg>
You can also use localapps, but they're more error prone and more difficult to maintain
14:35
<schlady>
But the performance with evince was much with 10.04. I always used encrypted traffic without LDM_DIRECTX.
14:35
… much better
14:36
Do you use NBD images with fat clients?
14:36
<alkisg>
Maybe they introduced "smooth scrolling" after 10.04
14:36
<schlady>
might be, yes.
14:36
<alkisg>
Maybe there's even some gsetting to disable it, you could google a bit
14:36
Yes, nbd with fats
14:36
!ltsp-pnp
14:36
<ltsp`>
ltsp-pnp: ltsp-pnp is an alternative (upstream) method to maintain LTSP installations for thin and fat clients that doesn't involve chroots: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ltsp-pnp
14:36
<alkisg>
Specifically, this ^
14:37
<schlady>
Ok. So you always have to rebuild the nbd images when you install new software?
14:38
<alkisg>
Yes, unless I'm in a testing mode, where I use btrfs+nbd, or nfs
14:40
<schlady>
I couldn’t get ltsp to work with nfs the last time I tried.
14:41
btrfs just for snapshots?
14:42
<alkisg>
No, for compression too
14:42
It needs 3 times less network bandwidth
14:42
Switching to nfs is very easy at least on debian/ubuntu
14:48alkisg is now known as work_alkisg
14:48
<schlady>
I think I have to try that again. Thanks so far!

How difficult is it to configure a second terminal server? I figure it's not as simple as installing the ltsp packages and adding the second server's ip to the lts.conf...
20:15
But I don't have access to my setup atm, and I was curious.
