<Mava>
hello everyone. Just was wondering that has anyone in the channel ever used sunray thinclient system?
05:59
It seems that there is a system for Solaris, commercial of course, but with the thinclients and software is one benefit that i have found pretty useful: it is possible to build a smart card authentication for the thinclients and furthermore somehow make it session based
06:04
what i mean with the session based: when you logon to thinclient first time using the smart card, it asks you username and password, ok now you have session opened and ready to use it. after you finished you just leave all softwares open, take the smart card out and leave the machine, it keeps your session in the server and all softwares running in the server while you're out. again: next time when entering the smart card to any of the running t
06:05
now my real question is: is this same possible with ltsp ? what should be done to build such a system which keeps your session running in the server while you are not logged on to any of the thinclients ?
06:24
<alkisg>
Mava: ltsp is mainly for booting the thin clients. By default it then uses plain remote X to connect to the server, which doesn't support session suspend & resume.
06:24
But, you can change the login manager to use e.g. freenx, which does support suspend & resume
06:27
Personally I think that the technologies that support suspend & resume (nx, x2go, rdp etc) are cool, but they're also much slower than remote X, so I wouldn't use them except for cases where no multimedia are needed

<Mava>
alkisg: this was really opening explanation of the functionality of the ltsp and the suspend system for linux system, thank you for this. I'll promise to tell some results of experiments when time comes. this time i really do not need any sort of multimedia. only plain office and mathematic software will be enough. thanks mate =)
06:51ry has joined IRC (ry!~ry@static-71-183-64-28.nycmny.fios.verizon.net)
06:55
<alkisg>
Presentation software like openoffice impress do need lots and lots of bandwidth for screen refreshes though, they're considered multimedia apps
06:56
Also, mathematic software like geogebra also needs extensive screen updates
07:38
<Mava>
ouch.. wel.. got to do pretty good performance measuring before making any decisions for running this on a productive environment
07:43
<Hyperbyte>
You can run applications as localapps too, if your thin client hardware is good enough for it. Then those applications don't need to transfer their visuals over network.
07:48ddave7 has joined IRC (ddave7!~Miranda@171-49-13-46.tmcz.cz)
07:50
<alkisg>
localapps make suspend even harder, though
07:51
(session suspension)
07:52
<Hyperbyte>

alkisg, thanks for hint. Figured it out. I think there is place for somekind of fuse for audios to make them better available.
09:05
<tarzeau>
good morning
09:06
i'm using official documentation now, and get_hosts as described here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ldm/+bug/837924
09:06
would any of you have a hint? alkisg maybe?
09:07
i can see an ssh login with tcpdump/ngrep port 22, however the ldm login screen reappears after some time
09:13Trixboxer has joined IRC (Trixboxer!~Trixboxer@office.supportdepartment.net)
09:17
<alkisg>
tarzeau: that might just be your client crashing because of X problems etc
09:18
If you hardcode LDM_SERVER=plimpy, without using get_hosts or anything, does it work?
09:18
(hardcode ==> I mean, set LDM_SERVER=plimpy in lts.conf)
09:32
<tarzeau>
alkisg: let me try...
09:40
alkisg: same problem with LDM_SERVER=plimpy directly set in lts.conf wdoesn't work
09:40
alkisg: it waits half a minute, black screen, ldm login screen
09:42
<alkisg>
So it doesn't sound load-balacing-related
09:42
Did that server ever somehow work?
09:42
<tarzeau>
how could i find out what the problem is? ltsp clients booting on plimpy, easily login to plimpy
09:42
alkisg: yes it works just fine on about 50 clients, with 50 users
09:43
<alkisg>
How do you specify that these clients use plimpy as a login server?
09:43
<tarzeau>
the dhcp servers have next-server
09:44
which points to tfpt server on plimpy and plompy
09:44
then the nbd image gets loaded that way
09:44
i don't specify the server i think on the ltsp server itself, it just works? i'm not sure how the clients know the server
09:45
<alkisg>
Boot a client with plimpy, via next-server on your dhcp server
09:45
Then run ltsp-localapps xterm on that client
09:45
<tarzeau>
oops wait there's an lts.conf in /etc in the changeroot because of some automatic configuration distribution tool. let me test everything with the lts.conf in /etc overriding the one in /var/lib/tftpboot/
09:45
<alkisg>
Then cat /etc/hosts, and see if the plimpy IP is there.
09:45
OK
09:46
Btw, what are you using for your dhcp server? The dhcp3-server package in some linux box?
09:46
<tarzeau>
alkisg: yes, two dhcp3 servers load balancing
09:47
dns is working fine, do you think i should add the hosts to /etc/hosts anyway?
09:47
<alkisg>
No, I'm not saying that
09:47ddave7 has joined IRC (ddave7!~Miranda@171-49-13-46.tmcz.cz)
09:47
<alkisg>
The client puts it's boot server in /etc/hosts
09:47
So you'd just *see* if it's actually using the server you want
09:47
I didn't mean that you should modify anything at all
09:48
<tarzeau>
192.33.99.213 server
09:48
plimpy server-plimpy
09:48
however login still failes
09:48
this ip resolves to plompy
09:49
<alkisg>
192.33.99.213 is the ip of ...yeah
09:49
So that client booted from plompy
09:49
<tarzeau>
alkisg: yes, plompy is testing mode, not productive
09:49
<alkisg>
So its ssh keys are wrong for plimpy
09:49
<tarzeau>
the ones in the chroot?
09:49
<alkisg>
Yes
09:49
<tarzeau>
how would i fix those?
09:50
<alkisg>
See the ltsp-update-sshkeys code. I think it was also mentioned some time in the mailing list, not sure
09:50

<alkisg>
Btw, I still think it'd be saner to do the load balancing at the dhcp level, i.e. changing next-server based on the server's load or availability
10:17
<daduke>
alkisg: thanks man. we've been struggling with this for some time now...
10:18
<alkisg>
This way you needn't bother with get_hosts or anything ltsp-related at all

tarzeau, daduke: you can set the bug state to "invalid" to close it if you want
10:23

alkisg: for the time being we're happy with the current solution, but we're already discussing how to implement DHCP load balancing
10:26
<tarzeau>
alkisg: thanks change it
10:32
<daduke>
tarzeau: dann könnten wir uns jetzt noch RDP + USB + Sound vornehmen...
