<vagrantc>
it is because ssh drops root privledges (privledge separation) too early for most pam modules to run.

<juhaj>
I was wondering, is it really necessary to have tftp server on the same machine as ltsp's nfs root? debian's packages seem to want this, but I don't
05:20
<budgee>
not necessary
05:21
jsut change tftp path in dhcpd.conf
05:22
<juhaj>
yeah, but there is no way of having ldminfod installed on a pure debian machine without having tftp server as well
05:23
<ogra>
ldminfod doesnt need a tftp server ... only inetd
05:23
<juhaj>
I'm in a situation, where I want to keep the nfs root on a different machine than the machine where ltsp eventually logs to and I certainly do not want extra services running anywhere (i.e. extra tftp)
05:23
<ogra>
just disable it in inetd.conf then ...
05:23
<juhaj>
hm.. I guess I could just turn it off from the other machine and keep it installed, but ...
05:24
<ogra>
tftp in ubuntu and debian is run by inetd, commenting the line in the config switches it off
05:24
<juhaj>
that sounds fine. but I still think "depends:" on tftp server is not correct
05:24
<budgee>
that's will need to be debated with the relevant package maintainers
05:24
<juhaj>
could I just copy ldminfod and necessary libraries over? or make them another package?
05:24
<ogra>
ldminfod is a part of the ltsp-server package ... if we once split that package into scattered pieces i'll make sure it doesnt depend on tftpd
05:25
<juhaj>
budgee: I know. I just wanted to make sure I'm correct in assuming what I want done is possible
05:25
ogra: exactly. that's what I think should be done: ltsp-server could become ltsp-server-nfsroot, ltsp-server-xhost, ltsp-server-whatever-else-is-necessary
05:26
"xhost" here refers to the machine ldm logs into to run the window manager et al
05:26
<ogra>
yes, thats what we discuss ... i'm not a fan of it because it gets you in maintenance hell, but i understand the user need for it
05:28
<juhaj>
I understand that point, too. I hate maintenance hell's =)
05:28
-'
05:29
though I don't think that would mean maintenance hell to anyone except the DM
05:29
<budgee>
ogra: how's work toward 5 going?
05:30
<ogra>
budgee, feisty (7.04) will have the full ltsp5 version
05:30
i wrote a new printserver after we had to drop lp_server (nobody noticed the flaky license until now)
05:31
we'Re switching to pulseaudio ...
05:31
<juhaj>
ogra: what I'm even more interested is ltspfs (- to 0.4.3+debian2): it's stuck in NEW due to freeze. are you going to try to tweak it into etch?
05:31
<ogra>
and rdesktop support should work in feisty out of the box ...
05:31
juhaj, nope, i'm no DD ...
05:31
vagrantc does the debian packages
05:31
i do ubuntu

ogra: yea, I know, but I just hate backporting: it's a maintenance hell
05:34
<ogra>
yep, i know
05:34
<juhaj>
I think I'll bug vagrantc if/when he shows up
05:35
otherwise, thank you for excellent work! this works like a charm.
05:35
<ogra>
we were late with the ltspfs packages in ubuntu, so in turn he wqaws late with asking for inclusion ...
05:35slipttees has quit IRC
05:35
<ogra>
and a freeze is a freeze ...
05:36
<juhaj>
(it didn't in the summer, the initrd mount nfs root -part was partially broken back then, but complaining to you guys obviously helped =) )
05:36
<budgee>
ogra: how complex do you think porting your fiesty work to gentoo will be
05:36
ogra: pulseaudio replacing esd?
05:36
<ogra>
yep
05:37
<budgee>
in fiesty?
05:37
<ogra>
well, ask dberkholz, he started a gentoo port ... i have no clue about the status
05:37
<juhaj>
hm.. another question: is there no docs about which settings are supported in lts.conf? https://wiki.ubuntu.com/EdubuntuLtsConfParams has some, but it's rather old
05:37
<budgee>
ok
05:37
I will.
05:37
juhaj: check the old documentation
05:37
on the old site
05:37
<juhaj>
it refers to dapper's docs, which does not basically have anything =)
05:37
<ogra>
juhaj, /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/doc/ltsp-client/examples/
05:37
<juhaj>
budgee: which old site?
05:38
<budgee>
dberkholz: you there?
05:38
<ogra>
thats in edgy ... and has the full list of supported params
05:38
<juhaj>
ogra: everything in there is supported? I checked that but it looked too much like it's vanilla upstream version so I didn't trust it
05:38
<budgee>
juhaj: http://ltsp.sourceforge.net/
05:39
<juhaj>
ogra: btw, "XSERVER = fqdn" does not seem to work. is it supposed to?
05:39
<budgee>
juhaj: See chapter 9: http://ltsp.mirrors.tds.net/pub/ltsp/docs/ltsp-4.1-en.html
05:39
<ogra>
juhaj, nope
05:39
<juhaj>
(I *may* have a name resolution error, though)
05:39
<budgee>
juhaj: does fqdn resolve?
05:39
<juhaj>
ogra: thanks. why's that, though?
05:39
<ogra>
XEDRVER requires an X driver name
05:39
*XSERVER
05:40
<juhaj>
budgee: of course, but possibly not on the ltsp client since i'm not entirely confident on the dhcp server providing correct values
05:40
<budgee>
juhaj: XSERVER = auto
05:40
<juhaj>
ogra: my bad! I meant SERVER, without X
05:40
<budgee>
juhaj: Does DHCP issue the clients with DNS entries allowing them to resolve FQDN?
05:41
<ogra>
SERVER should work with dns names and ip adresses
05:41
if you want the servers IP, just use SERVER=server
05:41
"server" is automatically pointing to the bootserver
05:42
<juhaj>
ogra: in that case, my dhcp gives bad name resolver config...
05:42
<ogra>
(yes, i should add that to the doc )
05:42
<budgee>
ogra: ok, interesting.
05:42
ogra: when was that default added?
05:42
<ogra>
"server" is set in /etc/hosts on boot of the client
05:42
<juhaj>
hmm, but /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/resolv.conf is correct

ogra: ok, is it a ubuntu default only?
05:43
<ogra>
nope, debian uses it too
05:43
we try to keep the code differences as small as possible ...
05:44
(with the target to have 100% identical code but different packaging)
05:44
<budgee>
ogra: ok, but this is post 4.2
05:44
<ogra>
s/different packaging/different distro specific dependencies/
05:44
thats ltsp 5
05:44
<budgee>
ogra: I am still using 4.1/2 in production?
05:45
-?
05:45
<ogra>
if you are fine with it and it runs why shouldnt you run 4.2 ...
05:45
<budgee>
ogra: well like i say, i am still using 4.2
05:46
ogra: i need to add networked audio using the AMD Geode LX
05:46
<ogra>
5 will have the easier maintenance aned upgradeability but if you doint change anything anyway and dont care about security upgrades for the clients there is no need to upgrade
05:46
<budgee>
having lots of trouble
05:46
ogra: also, only using VESA driver for the LX as cannot find any support for the driver

05:47
<budgee>
ogra: maybe 5 makes it easier to customise?
05:53
<ogra>
yep
05:53
you just apt-get install what you want in the client environment ...
05:54
i.e. you want a complete cups server running on the client, you can just install cups ...
05:54
no compiling or anything like with the former ltsp versions ...
05:54
just use the distro packages ;)

budgee: no, sound does not need to work on server
08:10
I wrote wiki's OSS-ESD redirection on KDE after testing in a server w/o soundcard kernel module ;)
08:10
<budgee>
envite: ok, how do i test the sound on the terminal? i tried through a shell on the terminal to cat /dev/random > /dev/dsp
08:11
envite: ok cool. This server has no sound modules loaded and the client is AMD Geode LX based, with ALSA soundard drivers only
08:12
envite: ps. the "cat /dev/random > /dev/dsp" did not render any static
08:12

08:18

ogra: seems not
08:19
envite: brb, will try now
08:19

09:04
it MB terms?
09:04
:%s/it/in
09:05
<jammcq>
cvs checkout is real fast
09:05
couple of minutes
09:05
that's not the hard part
09:05
once you start building, it needs to go fetch tarballs of all the upstream source packages
09:05ogra has quit IRC
09:05
<jammcq>
that can take quite a while
09:05
<budgee>
yeah, sure.
09:05
ok so once XOrg is down, I will need to patch the relevant file before rebuilding?
09:06
cd lbe
09:06
./build_all --fetch
09:06
oops, ignore that
09:06* budgee cringes
09:06
<jammcq>
yeah, you get the idea :)
09:06
<budgee>
jammcq: sorry dude, back on training wheels again, it has been a few years
09:06
things, they are a changing in LTSP
09:07
i am hoping to get more involved with dberkholz getting MueKow into Gentoo
09:07
<jammcq>
cool
09:07
that is VERY different from LBE
09:07
and very exciting
09:07
<budgee>
yes, concept sounds very exciting!
09:08
once the new nsc driver is built and working, can we update ltsp-4.2?
09:08
i assume my LBE will create a binary usable by all LTSP 4.2 users?
09:08
<jammcq>
you can give me the updated package.def file, and I can roll out an update
09:09
<budgee>
ok, cool. no idea what/where package.def is, but will pass it on once done.
09:09
should i use the same kernel release as with 4.2-4?
09:09
<jammcq>
yes
09:10
<budgee>
2.6.17.8
09:10
<jammcq>
umm, I don't remember
09:11
<budgee>
Was upgraded to cd lbe
09:11
./build_all --fetch
09:11
grr oops
