Got a small dilemma

14:30
<alkisg>
Good evening
14:30
<JustGav>
I've got an ubuntu 10.04 install which I then did a apt-get install ltsp-server-standalone, and I've added some local apps, configured lts.conf... however when it boots up it just launches and xterm on the ltsp server... where should I put a link for autostart
14:31
<johnny>
ubuntu 10.04 desktop? or server?
14:31
<JustGav>
It was a server install....
14:31
<johnny>
then you need to install ubuntu-desktop
14:31
on the server
14:31
<JustGav>
It does what I need it to, just trying autolaunch a localapp
14:31
<johnny>
ah ok
14:31
then copy a screen scirpt
14:31
and modify that
14:31
<JustGav>
Oh, I don't want the desktop, I'm simply using it as an alternative to my gpxe-iscsi setup
14:32
screen script?
14:32
<johnny>
yes, there are ones that load ldm, ones that load rdesktop, etc
14:32
see the source
14:33
<JustGav>
Ah yes, I did see a few references to rdesktop :) Cheers for that I'll go investigate now :)
14:33
<alkisg>
Which app as a localapp? You don't need a desktop environment?
14:34
<johnny>
you won't be using the LOCAL_APPS setup at all JustGav
14:34
that's for running them in a desktop environment
14:35
just the screen script is enough
14:35
<JustGav>
I've installed a media player under chroot...
14:35
And I can launch it with ltsp-localapps mplayer
14:35
<johnny>
no need
14:35
might as well just run it directly on the client
14:35
<JustGav>
Yeah, that's what I'm after....
14:35
<johnny>
screen script does that
14:36
<JustGav>
I know it is a bit of a nasty way to use ltsp, but it is a little slicker than my gpxe-iscsi config
14:37
<alkisg>
What are your client specs? Maybe fat clients would be a better option, those don't require a desktop on the server...
14:38
<johnny>
alkisg, with only a single app or 2 to run, why bother
14:38
i don't think he wants an entire desktop environment
14:38
<JustGav>
alkish, I've installed it without a desktop on the server side, that bit is fine :)
14:39
I am using it as a fat client, used using ltsp's diskless setup :)
14:39
<alkisg>
johnny, I just think it will be more straightforward, than trying to run an app as a user locally
14:40
rdesktop and the other screen scripts run as root
14:40
<johnny>
sure, but that may or may not matter
14:40
and it does too much
14:40
there's no fat client setup for a simple window manager
14:40
<alkisg>
Of course if he wants to run it as root and have some server path mounted with sshfs, that would work too...
14:41mistik1 has quit IRC
14:44
<JustGav>
I've just spotted the kiosk script in screen.d ...
14:44
Can I get away with just copying that and editting it?
14:47
<alkisg>
Won't you need to access server data from a user account?
14:47
How are you planning on logging in / mounting sshfs etc?
14:47
<JustGav>
No, because all the media is shared via cifs
14:48
and the media database is help on a ms-sql server...
14:48
<alkisg>
And you installed the samba client utilities etc on the chroot?
14:48
<JustGav>
Yeah
14:48
<alkisg>
If you've taken care of that part, then sure, either the kiosk script or even the rdesktop script could be used as a start...
14:49
<JustGav>
I know it is a slightly clunky way to do it... and it is cleaner just to roll my own setup which I've done perviously, but it had a quirk with having to load each client manually
14:49
<alkisg>
(the kiosk creates a user, while the rdesktop runs as root)
14:50
If you don't mind running stuff on the TC as root, then the rdesktop script would be easier
14:50
(security-wise)
14:52
<JustGav>
Okay, script created, now for dumb-ass question, where do put the script or what file to need to edit to tell the local client to launch it?
14:53
<alkisg>
You put it with the other scripts on /opt/ltsp..., then run ltsp-update-image, and finally edit lts.conf to tell the client to use it
14:54
e.g.
14:54
[Default]
14:54
SCREEN_07=myscript
14:54
<JustGav>
Got it :)
14:54
So SCREEN_00=default?
14:54
<alkisg>
No, there's no 00
14:54
vt1, vt2 etc
14:54
Starts from 1
14:55
But don't use 1, it's used for local logins
14:55
Use 07 instead
14:55
<JustGav>
Ah okay, I'll try that and report back, cheers again :)

<fluvvell>
Aaarg, I was in the middle of ltsp-update-image and the power went off, now theres an empty images directory and running it again returns nothing and a new prompt. Do I have to do a full reinstall ?
15:40
it said something about "chroot: cannot run command `/usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels': No such file or directory "
15:43
<alkisg>
ls -lha /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/update-kernels
15:44
If you don't have that file, then your chroot is corrupted..
16:10
<fluvvell>
how do you un-corrupt it?
16:11
<alkisg>
Depends on how corrupted it is. If all the disk is corrupted, then you even need to reinstall the server
16:11
If it's just the chroot, just delete it and rerun ltsp-build-client
16:17mikkel has quit IRC
16:22
<vagrantc>
should be easy enough to just delete /opt/ltsp/* and re-run ... if you're whole server is borked, well ... you'll probably notice
16:37
<MornignSon>
Is there somewhere I could find something like a case study or white paper on successful LTSP projects? I'd like something that addresses cost savings
16:37
<fluvvell>
disk seems to be ok, what about just apt-get install --reinstall ltsp-server ?
16:38
vagrantc, yeah thought of that but thats a whole download / reinstall of all packages. On the connection its on its about 4 hours :-(
16:39
at least /opt/ltsp/i386 seems fully intact, I can chroot into it and run updates. Just ltsp-update-image that doesn't return properly and do its thing.
16:40
<alkisg>
MornignSon: here's one for thin clients in general by fraunhover, it's the most official i've seen so far: http://it.umsicht.fraunhofer.de/TCecology/docs/TCecology2008_en.pdf
16:40
(not ltsp, but it should be about the same)
16:41
fluvvell: try chrooting to /opt/ltsp/i386 and running apt-get install --reinstall ltsp-client-core
16:42
<MornignSon>
thank you, i've found a lot from wyse about it but i was hoping for some details about successful ltsp installations. The link you gave me will help a lot though.
16:43
<fluvvell>
alkisg, thanks ... trying now.

alkisg, Yup, that did it! Its away laughing now- building the mksquashfs image. Very cool, thx.
16:47
its good to learn these things.
16:47
<alkisg>
fluvvell: well, watch out for random crashes either on the server or the clients :)
16:47
Corrupted disks can be a pain :)
16:49
<fluvvell>
Ah, its locked up 57% of the way through. :-(
16:50
%$&^!! Locked up the server.
16:50
no! wait, theres hope.
16:59
a rerun fixed it.
