<bcg>
I think I finally solved my original bzr hanging -problem: launchpad.net hangs if I offer ed25519 ssh key on handshake.
08:10
Same hanging happens with git.
08:11
So I have force rsa key on ~/.ssh/config file.
08:13
<alkisg>
If the issue persists, you could ask in #launchpad
08:13
<bcg>
No, I just force rsa key and it works.
08:31
How do I push my repo to launchpad? Should I use url git+ssh://git.launchpad.net/~MYUSER/ltsp/+git/ltsp-rhel7 ?

hi
14:54
alkisg: I'm preparing 2 VMs with epoptes right now.
14:55
so maybe it's finally possible to find the problem...
15:06
<alkisg>
question1000: to be honest, I won't hold my breath to finally be able to help you with remote support after 1 month :D
15:06
It'll be good if you make it, though
15:06
<question1000>
alkisg: the clients are online now ...
15:07
:P as I told you: the clients are offline in the afternoon
15:07
<alkisg>
Me too, I'm mostly online in the morning
15:07
<question1000>
but now I've got one master and one client ...
15:07
<alkisg>
Yet you keep coming in the afternoon :)
15:07
<question1000>
have to work in the morning ... no time for IT :)
15:07
<alkisg>
Anyways, hope you get it working
15:20
<question1000>
sounds as if you won't help me any more?
15:21
<alkisg>
Sure, when I've free time I'll still help you
15:21
Currently I'm busy though
15:21
Maybe monday morning...
15:22
<question1000>
now I can switch on/off everything from here ... n.p.
15:23
I double-checked it ... the VMs are working ... and epoptes is running .... I hope we'll find the problem on monday
15:32
cu then

<TheProf>
alkisg: Hello. I have set up the Virtual box as you recommended and then I downloaded a Free virtualbox to test is (FreeDos) and I am able to run it no problem. I followed the steps found here: https://www.thefanclub.co.za/how-to/how-create-virtualbox-ubuntu-ltsp-thin-client
16:24
for booting up a thin client but virtual box doesn't run but instead gives the error: VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED).
16:25
<alkisg>
google on how to enable vt-x on bios
16:25
You press del when the pc boots and you go to the bios options and you enable virtualization there
16:25
<TheProf>
That's what I was afraid of :) I thought the Dos image working meant I didn't have to do that.
16:26
I had to go to work so I am not at the school now.
17:03drymis has left IRC (drymis!615ab632@gateway/web/freenode/ip.97.90.182.50)
17:13
<alkisg>
TheProf: ah now I remember, you were trying to boot a client remotely because you weren't there, and kvm asked for vt-x, and i told you to use vbox because it also works without vt-x
17:14
So yeah if you go to the vm settings, you should be able to run it a bit slower, but even without vt-x
17:14
<TheProf>
Right.
17:14
OK. Checking for the setting now
17:15
I thought when I was able to get the FreeDox image working correctly, it would be smooth sailing
17:19
alkisg: I have gone through the settings I can find but I am not seeing a difference - they still give me the error that VT-x is disabled.
17:28
<alkisg>
TheProf: do a vnc
17:28
!vnc-dide
17:28
<ltsp>
vnc-dide: To share your screen with me, run this: sudo apt-get --yes install x11vnc; x11vnc -connect srv1-dide.ioa.sch.gr - this is a reverse connection, it doesn't need port forwarding etc.
17:29
<TheProf>
I feel as those this server has been personally offended by me and won't cooperate. :) Under the system settings, under acceleration tab, there is a checkbox to enable VT-x. If I uncheck it, it will not save the settings as they are invalid
17:29
OK I will do that now.
17:31
alkisg: I'm still connected via x2go
17:32
alkisg: Also you're going to find /opt/ltsp/amd64 is being moved to another location now as I was backing it up before trying to rebuild a client
17:34
<alkisg>
You have a 64bit chroot
17:34
<TheProf>
alkisg: yes
17:34
<alkisg>
64bit VMs require VT-x
17:34
<TheProf>
Ah.
17:34
<alkisg>
So you can't run it with vbox either
17:34
What was the initial issue?
17:34
Can't login?
17:35
<TheProf>
Users cannot log in on the client, but they can log in at the console
17:35
This included newly created users
17:35
Should I create a 32 bit client as a test?
17:37
<alkisg>
TheProf: which user have you tried with?
17:39
TheProf: see the issue?
17:39
Missing primary group for that user
17:40
And actually, missing all primary groups in /home
17:40
Your user accounts are all messed up
17:40
See jbishay, that one is correct
17:40
<TheProf>
Because I created them again yesterday. When I first encountered the issue I had the names all correct for groups.
17:40
<alkisg>
It's the only one that says jbishay/jbishay
17:41
<TheProf>
What about for newly created users?
17:41
<alkisg>
How do you create the users?
17:42
<TheProf>
exported from webmin on the current working server, imported using webmin into this one. Hashed passwords
17:42
<alkisg>
The new users
17:42
How do you create a new user?
17:42
<TheProf>
same - webmin to create.
17:43
<alkisg>
OK, then it's possible that webmin is pretty broken and can't create users properly :)
17:43
There's a reason it's been removed from ubuntu...
17:43
<TheProf>
Ah.
17:43
<alkisg>
Let's add a test user
17:43
<TheProf>
It was very useful for allowing another teacher to create users without needing them to open a terminal as I could limit permissions
17:44
<alkisg>
OK try with that user tomorrow
17:45
<TheProf>
Alright.
17:45
<alkisg>
And, do fix your users, they are all horribly wrong
17:45
<TheProf>
Yes normally I run a script that fixes all the permissions.
17:45
<alkisg>
The users don't have group
17:45
<TheProf>
This would be the 4th server migration but the first one that ever failed
17:45
<alkisg>
*groups
17:45
<TheProf>
Yes it adds the correct group, permissions, etc
17:45
<alkisg>
It's not just a matter of permissions
17:45
There's essential information missing; you need to create a different group per user
17:46
<TheProf>
Sorry I meant it would read the username, create the group with the same name and assign it as their primary group
17:46
<alkisg>
Cool
17:46
<TheProf>
Webmin was very useful at the start of each term as I could automatically batch create students with one button
17:47
<alkisg>
We have sch-scripts for that... it'll be internationalized under the name "ltsp-manager"
17:48
Of course, something other than webmin can be broken
17:48
In any case, to test, you need vt-x or a real client
17:48
<TheProf>
That will be interesting to see. We did it with a spreadsheet. column 1 first name column 2 last name. A simple text formula would generate a line in column 3 that would generate the username based on their name, assign password, create all the groups, etc. You just copy-paste it in
17:49
The office would email the list of names, paste it into column and generate the accounts in under 2 minutes for any number of students at once.
17:49
<alkisg>
We have different dialogs for mass creation, .csv import, passwd import etc
17:49
<TheProf>
I will test it with a real client.
17:49
yes csv import sounds great!
17:49
<alkisg>
Nah, the others are better :)
17:49
And we also have student signup
17:49
<TheProf>
Sounds like a nightmare for grade 4 :)
17:49
<alkisg>
.csv import also has autodetection and autocorrection of issues
17:50
for grades 1-6, we use generic account names, e.g. a1-01
17:50
Each user has a different account of course
17:50
They're created with the mass user creation dialog
17:51
And it autoassigns them to groups, and creates shared folders for each group=class
17:51
<TheProf>
That is excellent. I appreciate the effort going into LTSP - we have been using it continuously since 2003 and it just works perfectly. Thank you.
17:51
<alkisg>
TheProf: what's your native language? english?
17:51
<TheProf>
Yes.
17:51
<alkisg>
You might be able to review the english dialogs, after we translate them from greek to english
17:51
<TheProf>
Certainly I can.
17:51
<alkisg>
nice! bb in 20'...
17:52
<TheProf>
alkisg: Thanks.
17:52
<elias_a>
Oh - how I love this kind of discussion. :)
17:52
TheProf: Thank you already now.
17:54
<TheProf>
elias_a: Well, I'd say hold with the thanks until I actually do anything :)
18:00
<elias_a>
TheProf: I already succeeded in provoking you. :)
18:01
<TheProf>
True, but without a working server I am going to be rather useless. Hopefully I can get this resolved soon.
