hello friends
19:19* vagrantc waves
19:24
<jammcq>
vagrantc: how was debconf ?
19:27
<vagrantc>
jammcq: was good!
19:28
jammcq: you scheming for the BTS yet?
19:28
or have those schemes already been laid?
19:28
<jammcq>
well... looks like it might be just me and scotty
19:28
it's definitely a social event this year
19:29
<vagrantc>
i hope you all make it out alive, what with all the extra drinking you'll need to make up for
19:30
<jammcq>
I'm thinking the hotel isn't gonna want to setup a big lobster fest dinner for only a couple people
19:31
i'm looking forward to the day when I can afford to travel a bit more. 2 kids in college is damn near killing me
19:31
<vagrantc>
jammcq: you could send them to the salt mines and make a profit instead!
19:32
<jammcq>
yeah, but then they won't be in a position to take care of me, when I'm old and gray
19:33
<vagrantc>
you saw that trap!

<stgraber>
arguably in my case, I'm gone all of October and half of November so even if it was at some other time it wouldn't really have made a difference :(
20:00
well, hopefully next year will be less crazy, two years without seeing Scotty will be hard enough, I don't intend to make that a third ;)
20:01
<ternarybit>
running into some strange issues using the screen.d/kiosk screen script.
20:01
on physical and virtual clients, any other screen script works fine. the kiosk one however, only works on a virtual client.
20:02
on physical client, if any SCREEN_0X="kiosk", it just locks at a blank screen after booting. Can't change consoles with Ctrl+Alt+FX
20:03
As soon as I remove "kiosk" from the lts.conf and change it to, say, rdesktop, everything works.
20:04
The kiosk script works fine in my VM client. Loads chromium-browser fullscreen with no issues. But I can't even switch to a shell on a physical client if the kiosk script is set on any screen.
20:04
<jammcq>
hmm, washington DC, eh?
20:05
<ternarybit>
running latest ltsp packages on ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS and the chroot is fully updated. I really appreciate any ideas :)
20:05
<jammcq>
I wonder how much of a detour that is between detroit and maine
20:06
ternarybit: could you be running out of ram on the client?
20:06
<ternarybit>
jammcq: ...yes, quite possibly.
20:07
256MB a bit low to run a kiosk?
20:07
<ogra_>
jammcq, want to drop by for a beer and steak ??
20:07
:)
20:07gbaman has left IRC (gbaman!~gbaman@nwsp.cust.atlasisp.net, Remote host closed the connection)
20:07* vagrantc thinks we should just show up at scotty's unannounced someday
20:07
<jammcq>
ogra_: I'll check the map
20:07
<ogra_>
lol
20:08
vagrantc, ++
20:11
<ternarybit>
wow. top in my vm client shows ~460700KiB mem used. so, 512MB must be the minimum.
20:11
<jammcq>
that can be misleading
20:11
the kernel will allocate ram for buffers if it's not being used for something else
20:12
so it looks like most of ram is in use
20:12
<ternarybit>
oh I see. well, let's try lowering my vm's ram to 256 and see what happens.
20:12
<jammcq>
it may very well fail at 256, but it's different hardware, so it may fail in a completely different way
20:14
<ternarybit>
chromium came up ok with 256 in the vm. is that reason enough to believe the problem on bare metal probably isn't ram-related?
20:15
<jammcq>
I still suspect ram
20:16
<ternarybit>
what might you suggest I try?
20:16
<jammcq>
can you increase the ram on a physical client?
20:17
<ternarybit>
maybe. but just to test the theory, can I enable nbd swap or something?
20:18
<jammcq>
yeah, someone else will need to help you with that. it's been too long since I played with that
20:18
<ternarybit>
ok, thanks. but in your opinion, 256 is not enough for a webkiosk?
20:19
<jammcq>
i've got at least 1GB on all mine
20:19
<ternarybit>
i only ask because it seems to run rdesktop flawlessly on 256
20:20
<jammcq>
I dont' remember how kiosk mode differs from the other modes
20:20
other than the browser is full screen
20:20
<ternarybit>
it's an interesting script that i can't quite seem to fully understand, but then again i am new.
20:20
<jammcq>
i'm just too rusty and ltsp has changed too much since I last worked on it
20:21
<ternarybit>
still, thanks for the input.
20:22
i honestly don't care how it works, i'm just looking for the most straightforward fullscreen chromium browser via netboot. open to any ideas.
20:24
im going to jump over to a client with higher specs just to see.
20:33
hey, I got some output:
20:33
adding user 'ltspkiosk'
20:33
adding new group 'ltspkiosk' (1001) ...
20:34
(EE) / fatal server error: /(EE) / Invalid argument for -config / With elevated privileges, the file specified with -config must be a relative path and must not contain any ".." elements. Using default xorg.conf search path.
20:34
slash representing newline
20:35
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: the kiosk mode runs the browser locally
20:36
<ternarybit>
vagrantc: right.
20:36
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: so i would be surprised if 256MB without swap was enough for anything but the most very basic of web browsing
20:36
and even then, it's likely to crash with out-of-memory errors
20:36
<ternarybit>
vagrantc: I'm with you. this new client has 1GB and a core2 duo.
20:37
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: NBD_SWAP=true in lts.conf should enable NBD swap, to give you an extra safety margin.
20:37
<ternarybit>
the new client gave me that output. the 256MB client just hung
20:37
I will add that, but is that necessary for a 1GB client? tests were running great in my VM client with 512MB provisioned.
20:38
<vagrantc>

ternarybit: and you might also want to paste your lts.conf
20:42
<ternarybit>
both are here: http://pastebin.com/gmMdRD25
20:43
I modified /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/share/ltsp/screen.d/kiosk to include chromium-browser, but that's the only change I made to the script.
20:43
again, working fine in my vm client.
20:47
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: what did you modify? why not just use the KIOSK_BROWSER variable from lts.conf?
20:47
or KISOK_EXE, i guess.
20:47
<ternarybit>
the KIOSK_EXE in lts.conf was recent, didn't realize I could just set it that way.
20:48
<vagrantc>
you also appear to have both i386 and amd64 chroots... ?
20:49
are you sure you're editing the right lts.conf?
20:49
<ternarybit>
there is an if statement that chooses the KIOSK_EXE if you don't specify it. I added an elif for chromium-browser alongside opera. I could revert this change easily
20:49
I was tinkering with both. As of now, everything is using i386 only, and yes I'm only editing that lts.conf
20:50
<vagrantc>
that sounds like a patch we could take upstream...
20:52
looks like there's support for firefox, google-chrome and opera upstream

i just can't account for how it works in my vm host, but not physical, even when matching ram. seems very unlikely to be an issue with the script, right?
20:55
based on the error I saw, it looks like X isn't initializing properly.
20:55
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: looks like in recent versions of Debian, it's /usr/bin/chromium
20:56
<ternarybit>
good to know, but it's definitely chromium-browser in my case.
20:56
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: yeah, i agree it looks like X is failing to start ... it's passing the -config option to X ... presumably something's telling it to use -config /var/run/ltsp-xorg.conf or some such ecause some option is set

<ternarybit>
any ideas where to start? I've looked through the kiosk script, the kioskSession script, can't find any mention of -config.
21:00
in other words I'm very ignorant as to how ltsp initializes X, or how I might be able to troubleshoot the "invalid argument for -config"
21:02
if it helps any, I tried this on another physical box and chromium did come up, except half the screen was blank. still sounds like an X initialization issue, but it's clearly inconsistent between clients
21:03
<vagrantc>
i've gotta head out soon, but the part that generates that should be in /usr/share/screen-session.d in the client chroot
21:03
ones that pass -config are the X_ARGS stuff
21:03
if i remember correctly
21:04
something could be setting the color depth or something
21:05
some of them set values when detecting certain video cards...
21:05
<ternarybit>
maybe xs90-set-x-conf?
21:06
<vagrantc>
i bet they're intel cards
21:06
<ternarybit>
yes, intel most likely. dell workstations
21:07
dell/gateway at least, almost certainly intel.
21:07
<vagrantc>
XS20-intel-virtual-hack triggers XS85-virtual
21:07
which triggers xorg.conf generation
21:07
ternarybit: i'd be curious to see what arguments it's passing to X
21:08
<ternarybit>
paste xorg.conf?
21:08
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: can you try it just setting SCREEN_02=shell and SCREEN_07=ldm ?
21:08
i think ldm will log which arguments it passes
21:08
<ternarybit>
sure I can try. what file am I looking to get?
21:09
<vagrantc>
look in /var/log/ldm.log, /var/log/Xorg.log ...
21:09
looking to see what arguments it passes
21:09
you could also put some debugging into the kiosk screen script ...
21:09
that might be easier

21:10
<ternarybit>
yeah, that line is really hard for me to parse.
21:11
<vagrantc>
cut and paste the line like that, and put another above it like ...
21:11
logger su - ${KIOSKUSER} -c "XINITRC_DAEMON=${XINITRC_DAEMON} KIOSK_WM=${KIOSK_WM} KIOSK_OPTIONS=${KIOSK_OPTIONS} xinit $xinitrc /usr/share/ltsp/kioskSession\ ${KIOSK_EXE} -- ${DISPLAY} vt${TTY} -nolisten tcp ${X_ARGS} -br" >/dev/null
21:11
i think that might work...
21:12
<ternarybit>
I'll try to dig up some info after lunch.
21:12
are there known issues with intel chipsets?
21:12
i mean gpus
21:13
<vagrantc>
there's a hack in there ... could try disabling it, too
21:13
<ternarybit>
how might I disable the hack?
21:14
<vagrantc>
ternarybit: X_VIRTUAL_AUTO=false
21:14
in lts.conf
21:15
<ternarybit>
does line order in lts.conf matter?
21:15
<vagrantc>
no
21:15
well, as long as it's after the [default] section
21:15
<ternarybit>
right. trying...
21:17* vagrantc waves
21:17

good luck!

anyone with similar issues browsing the irc logs, if you have trouble with the kiosk screen script on intel gpu, add X_VIRTUAL_AUTO=false to lts.conf
