stevecook: where's your area?
18:32
alkisg: met with someone from the local schools the other day using LTSP; wants to get it used more widely in the local schools and was pretty inspired by what you've done!
18:33
<alkisg>
Cool! /me hopes someone will be interested in helping to internationalize sch-scripts...
18:33
This really automates installations, even non IT teachers can maintain pc labs with them
18:34
sch-scripts do have some dark areas wrt debian policy though, hard to upstream it to debian
18:34
<vagrantc>
alkisg: so a big part of what makes it work is sch-scripts?
18:35
mangling config files and such?
18:35
<alkisg>
Yes, sch-scripts basically stands for "do whatever the teachers need to do automatically, or offer them a gui"
18:35
<vagrantc>
you can mangle configuration files with helper utilities (e.g. ltsp-config, puppet, etc.) but running the helper utilities automatically is a problem.
18:35
<cliebow>
Sob!!! I cant be on the map..since i ve lost all my labs.
18:35
<alkisg>
dependencies (gnome-flashback), gsettings, config files, gui for user management, gui for setting up a network connection with nat...
18:36
So basically the guide says, install ubuntu from our own live cd, and then run this command to make your installation a "server"
18:36
<vagrantc>
none of that actually sounds policy-violating if the admin runs it manually
18:37
<alkisg>
Yes, if we were to upstream it we'd need to run those in a "setup wizard", after postinst
18:37
<vagrantc>
ah, but you run them in postinst?
18:37
<alkisg>
Some things run even before sch-scripts is installed (adding our repositories etc
18:38
we have something like `wget our installation script and run it`
18:38
We'll slowlly move things to packages, e.g. sch-keyring and such
18:38
One good part is our user management interface, we should definately internationalize this, it allows mass user creation with shared folders etc
18:39
Ideal for schools
18:39
Something like this: http://dide.sam.sch.gr/keplinet/images/article-images/ltsp_15.png
18:39
The teacher just mentions his classes and the number of pcs in his lab
18:40
Or, we also have a signup feature in ldm
18:41
<cliebow>
there are some issues with the map..Indonesia is out in the middle of the Atlantic

I am so happy with this setup, it runs fullscreen vid perfectly and does not require a user to manually connect to the internet on each session. The only tiny niggle rmeaining is finding a way for the unlock function to recognise the user password or, failing that, how to disable lockscreen. any advice gratefully recieved
