I followed this howto: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/EdubuntuFAQ

its weird, since inside the themes there doesnt seem to be any authentication stuff

<vagrantc>
Nubae: sounds like authentication is working, if new error messages are showing up in ~/.xsession-errors
13:55
<Nubae>
does vnc get used at all for the session creation? Because everything I've read on the net talks about vnc relating to that the errors I'm getting
13:55

not by default
13:56
<Nubae>
yeah authentication is working, I can see that from the logs...

vagrantc: "pastebot" is The LTSP pastebot is at http://pastebot.ltsp.org. Please paste all text longer than a line or two to the pastebot, as it helps to reduce traffic in the channel. A link to the content will be pasted in the channel.

13:59

the thing is I modified something in order to get local usb working, and I remember it had to do with changing from display 11 (being encryption) to 6
13:59
<vagrantc>
Nubae: can you try with LDM_DIRECTX=False
13:59
<Nubae>
was the env setting I believe
14:00
anyway, I'll try disabling directx first

ah, right.
14:06

would that effect it?
14:07
<vagrantc>
well, a bug was reported with that particular issue ... i *think* that line should be commented out, but i haven't been able to confirm it for myself.
14:08
<Nubae>
well disabling directx causes even quicker logout of the session

vagrantc : I checked using grep filename /etc/*/dhcpd.conf and got the two options configured which are filename "/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.0"; and filename "/ltsp/i386/nbi.img"; Client trys to load nbi.img, but nothing happens. any ideas
14:09
<Nubae>
at least its different :-)
14:09
<vagrantc>
Joe90: is your client using etherboot or pxe ?
14:10
<Joe90>
I created a floppy for this box years ago so I can't really say. It usually takes the non-pxe option, namely nbi.img??
14:10
<vagrantc>
right
14:11
Joe90: try a new floppy ?
14:11
Joe90: it was probably an etherboot floppy
14:11
!bootfloppy
14:11
<ltspbot>
vagrantc: "bootfloppy" is http://etherboot.anadex.de or ftp://k12linux.mesd.k12.or.us/pub/K12LTSP/Universal_boot_floppy
14:11
<vagrantc>
those are two simple ones
14:12
or http://rom-o-matic.net
14:12
<Nubae>
vagrantc: what makes me think this is related to the themes is that I have 2 chroots... the one that didnt have the themes modified had no login problems, whereas the other one did
14:12
<vagrantc>
Nubae: what did you change in your themes?
14:13
<Nubae>
just the bg.png image
14:13
<Joe90>
I originally used rom-o-matic, but what could be the issue with the floppy, it gets as far as the dhcpd conf , but no further?
14:14
<vagrantc>
Joe90: well, i guess i'm not clear ... does it boot anything?
14:15
Joe90: there are two points where it makes a dhcp request ... first from etherboot, and later from within linux
14:15bobby_C has joined #ltsp
14:15
<Nubae>
I noticed, however, that originally chroot:/etc/alternatives/ldm-theme was soft linked to the default theme under ldm/themes
14:15
<vagrantc>
Joe90: so, does it download a kernel and boot to the second part, or does it fail at etherboot ?
14:15
<Nubae>
maybe there is something in there that does something special?
14:15
<vagrantc>
Nubae: it's just a symlink management system
14:15
Nubae: it's better to use update-alternatives than symlinking manually ... but effectively that wouldn't really cause an issue
14:16
Nubae: if your theme is coming up, your theme is "working"
14:16
<Nubae>
yeah... so what could possibly cause this?
14:16
<vagrantc>
even if your theme is breaking something else...
14:17
Nubae: you're using ubuntu ?
14:17
<Nubae>
yeah, edubuntu
14:17
<vagrantc>
which release? gutsy?
14:17
<Nubae>
yeah
14:17
<Joe90>
vagrantc : It makes a DHCP request to the server, gets an ACK, tells me its "Loading [Server address]: /ltsp/i386/nbi.img" and sits there quietly doing nothing. (Well loudly actually)
14:18
<vagrantc>
Joe90: loudly as in ... ?
14:19
fans whirring, or what?
14:19
Joe90: gutsy (and maybe feisty) switched what generates the nbi.img ... you might need to upgrade your etherboot floppy to a newer version.
14:20
<Joe90>
Yep. Fan is cranking away,
14:20
I will have to try a boot CD, any good links in that case?
14:21
<vagrantc>
if you're currently booting from floppy, can you just make a new floppy ?
14:22
in any case, all of the above posted URLs should have options to boot from CD, i think
14:23
<Joe90>
My current server doesn't have a floppy drive and the client takes an hour to get any kind of distro started. Will try CD I think, thanks
14:24
<Nubae>
any ideas where to look for me? :-(
14:25
<vagrantc>
Nubae: i would try getting it working without a modified chroot
14:25
Nubae: get the defaults working, and then change one thing at a time, so you know what change actually breaks it

14:27
wait a minute ... what's this vncuser thing ?
14:27
<Nubae>
exactly
14:28
<vagrantc>
you have vnc packages in the chroot ?
14:28
<Nubae>
hmmm, I dont believe so no
14:29
I'll try building the other chroot and compare output
14:29
<vagrantc>
does the flteachertool (or whatever it was called) depend on vnc stuff?
14:30
<ltsppbot>
"Nubae" pasted "squashfs output" (20 lines) at http://pastebot.ltsp.org/367
14:30
<Nubae>
quite different
14:30
yeah it does, heavily
14:30
<vagrantc>
yeah, that looks more normal
14:31
Nubae: that paste was from an unmodified chroot ?
14:31
<Nubae>
hmmm.... no, from my other chroot
14:31
but... I have backups of both
14:31
for just such an occassion :-)
14:31
<vagrantc>
heh
14:31
well, you're wiser than many
14:32
i'd suggest reverting to a working chroot and seeing if that fixes anything
14:33
Nubae: you installed flteachertool on the server, or in the chroot ?
14:33
<Nubae>
on the server
14:34
but it seems to have messed things up quite a bit... I didnt know sessions depended on vnc
14:34
anyway I'm reverting to a backup and hopefully wont need to change too much in the backed up chroot.... if that even works...
14:36
<vagrantc>
if the vnc stuff dropped some things in /etc/X11/Xsession.d it might mess things up ...
14:40
<Nubae>
I changed /etc/rc.local in the chroot
14:40
do u think that could do anything?
14:41
<vagrantc>
depends on how you changed it :P
14:41
if it couldn't do anything, why would you bother to change it? :)
14:42
<Joe90>
vagrantc: no change with new CD and latest boot rom. As an aside, can I restart dhcpd without shutting down, if so How? tks
14:43
<vagrantc>
Joe90: invoke-rc.d dhcp3-server restart
14:43
<Nubae>
well, the backed up chroot is looping even before getting to ldm
14:44
so its not in the chroot its somewhere else... this is looking bad
14:45
<vagrantc>
Nubae: it's not even booting anymore ?
14:45
Nubae: where is it "looping" ?
14:45
<Nubae>
nope, gets stuck at ip-config
14:45
well, I took out directx=false and switched back to true...
14:45
oh... now its going again
14:45
<vagrantc>
no, that's well before lts.conf gets read
14:46
<Joe90>
command failed, client now complaining about no IP Address, maybe a quick shut down would be better???
14:46
<Nubae>
nope... now its stuck and wont even load display manager
14:46
<vagrantc>
Nubae: where is it stuck ?
14:46
<Nubae>
right before it loads the display manager
14:47
I get a message saying the display server has been shut down about 6 times in the last 90 seconds
14:47
it is likely something bad is going on.
14:47
<vagrantc>
sounds like your X server didn't get properly configured
14:48
Joe90: if restarting dhcp manually fails, rebooting probably will not fix it ... look in /var/log/syslog to see why it failed
14:48
<Joe90>
How do I get out of this channel in a nice way?
14:48
<Nubae>
nah... cause I see the small ubuntu hourglass thingie
14:48
for about a millisecond
14:48
<vagrantc>
Nubae: is gdm installed in the chroot?
14:48
<Nubae>
shouldnt be
14:49
<vagrantc>
just checking
14:49
<Nubae>
oops... it is
14:49
<vagrantc>
well, i'm not so familiar with ubuntu's LTSP ... i mostly work on debian, which is similar, but there are enough differences that i can only help so much
14:50
Nubae: sounds like your chroot contains lots of modifications ... i would start with a clean chroot, modify things one at a time, and start over :)
14:50
<Joe90>
vagrantc: may be something to do with the second NIC (wireless) ? Anyway, reboot, back later

<Nubae>
I'm not so sure its the chroot though, I'll go to the other backup and see if thats different
14:51
<vagrantc>
i'm not sure either ...
14:51
there's the chroot, in /opt/ltsp/ARCH, and the images, in /opt/ltsp/images/ARCH.img ... so they coculd easily get out of sync.
14:51
<Nubae>
well, thanks for your help...
14:52
<vagrantc>
Nubae: you could mount the image with something like: mount -t squashfs -o loop /opt/ltsp/images/ARCH.img /mnt
14:52
<Nubae>
well, I always build the images after any changes
14:52
how would that help me?
