<muppis>
antilyman, in use. Why so?
05:02
<antilyman>
@muppis when booting the client hangs after "........done"
05:02
seems like it's a kernel panic as numlock stops working
05:03
but the client can be booted with lubuntu live cd
05:04
<muppis>
antilyman, remove quiet splash from /var/lib/tftboot/ltsp/<arch>/pxelinux.cfg/default so you can see reason for hang.
05:06
<antilyman>
muppis, I did it already but still don't have message, it still hangs after ".......................................done"
05:07
do I have to rebuild image after changing this file ?
05:08
<muppis>
No.
05:11litlebuda has quit IRC

<antilyman>
it seems like the client use the "nbi.img" then decompressing it, then hangs
05:13
<muppis>
Ok, try this: Comment out if -statement from /etc/ltsp/dhcpd.conf, except line filename " .../pxelinux.0";
05:13
<antilyman>
ok, gonne try
05:19mikkel has joined #ltsp
05:19
<antilyman>
it boots now, thank you, I thought this if statement was important (because it depends on clients card)
05:20
I still have problems with drm, nouveau but I'll try to fix it
05:20
(but if you have any advice to help me start searching...)
05:22
<muppis>
I'm sorry, but I have no idea.
05:25

no problem, it boots now :) I was stuck at this boot problem, now that it's more X problem, i think I find out :) thanx again

<Hyperbyte>
Hi muppis. :-) On monday you were helping me with a problem regarding ownership of the /home/<user>/ directory on thin clients... would you mind helping me a little bit more? ;-)
06:19
<muppis>
Sure.
06:19
<Hyperbyte>
This is the output of the 'mount' command on the ltsp client
06:19
http://secondary.recreatie-zorg.nl/jan/ltsp-mount-client.txt
06:20
The /home/jan/ directory shows with ownership nobody.nobody, but the 'jan' user -is- able to write to it without problems
06:21
Only some programs don't run because they complain about the /home/jan/ directory not owned by jan
06:21Zanchey has left #ltsp

<Hyperbyte>
Aaaand... the /home/ on the terminal server is mounted with NFSv4 from a file server. I'm also running NIS across the servers, it's all working fine so it seems to me.
06:22
But somehow the LTSP terminal's /home/jan/ dir is nobody.nobody.
06:23
<muppis>
Does server show correct owner and group?
06:27
<Hyperbyte>
Yessir.
06:28
Wait
06:28
It did.
06:28
It doesn't anymore.
06:28
Oh that's embarassing.
06:28
I checked it when I set up NFS and since then I didn't look at it again assuming it was still ok
06:29
Ok so then it's an NFS problem.
06:30pmatulis has joined #ltsp

<muppis>
If it shows something big number for both, you need idmapd running. Enable it from /etc/default/nfs-common on both.
06:32
<Hyperbyte>
It's running on both
06:32
Last time I had this it was an NFS protocol mismatch... server with NFSv3 and client with NFSv4
06:32
Now both server and client are running the same NFS version though
06:35
<muppis>
What distro you are using?
06:36
<Hyperbyte>
Fedora 13, x86_64
06:37
<muppis>
Sorry, no much experience from that, but try look out place where sshfs parameters are set.
06:38
<Hyperbyte>
Well, you know... since it's not an #ltsp problem I should probably head over to #fedora. :-)

06:38
<alkisg>
sshfs over nfs4? cool :D though it makes a lot of roundtrips, why not use just nfs4?
06:39
<Hyperbyte>
alkisg, I was actually wondering about that
06:39
alkisg, I thought it might make more sense to mount the entire /home/ directory on the thin clients over NFS
06:39
<alkisg>
You'd need to patch a couple of lines in some initscripts, but it should work otherwise..
06:39
<Hyperbyte>
Which scripts? :-)
06:39
<alkisg>
(don't know about fedora though, but for ubuntu it's exactly 2 lines that need to be changed)
06:40
<Hyperbyte>
Because that's the part where I got stuck with this idea.
06:40katsuwi has quit IRC
06:40
<alkisg>
Hmmm I can't look into the source code right now, if you're around in a couple of hours..
06:40
<Hyperbyte>
Sure, I'll stick around. :-)
06:40
Or if you could give me a hint on what I can search for, I could just do a grep on /etc/
06:41
<alkisg>
on chroot, /usr/share/ltsp, grep for NFS_HOME
06:41
*or /usr/share/initramfs-tools or whatever else (dracut?) fedora uses
06:41
(again in the chroot)
06:43
...and if it doesn't have that part of the ltsp code, you could search for sshfs, i.e. the line where it mounts the user dir
06:43
bbl
06:43
<Hyperbyte>
Thanks!
06:45
Seems to be in /usr/share/ldm/rc.d/X01-localapps on the chroot. :-)
06:46
<pmatulis>
alkisg: so i upgraded my rig to lucid and i'm able to launch a remote app manually but when i plug in '/usr/bin/remoteapps evince' in the (localapp) FF dialog it complains (does not exist essentially)
06:46
<alkisg>
You need that part commented out, and nfs mounted before that in some additional script
06:46
Again bbl :D

pmatulis: there was a bug in the remoteapps launcher and it didn't process parameters correctly, so either manually update the related ltsp script or make a two-lines script named "launch-evince" that contains "ltsp-remoteapps evince" within it.
08:02

09:21
<alkisg>
Yes
09:21
ltsp-remoteapps evince $1
09:21
<pmatulis>
ah right
09:21
<alkisg>
"$1" is better actually
09:25
<pmatulis>

<alkisg>
Can that file be accessed from the localapp?
09:26
A sorry no, the server app?
09:26
...so ignore that... :)
09:27
You can temporarily replace /usr/bin/evince on the server with a shell script that does: echo "$@" >> /tmp/localapps.output
09:27
So you'll be able to see exactly what is passed to evince
09:28

I'm mounting local usb hd but my user cannot umount its, why?
09:29
<alkisg>
Uzzi: ltspfsd doesn't support unmounting, it flushes data every 2 seconds so you just wait 2 secs and then directly unplug any sticks/HDs
09:31
<pmatulis>
well i did a find on the client and the file is stored in /tmp (locally) so i don't see how the server app can access it

good evening all....
14:09
<Lns>
hi robb_
14:10
<robb_>
anyone can explain why a newly created standar user can't login to ltsp?.... with my own (root priveliges) account I have no problems
14:10
what do I need to change? does a user need certain rights?
14:10
<Lns>
robb_: nope..should "just work". have you been able to log in with that user to the server itself?
14:11
<robb_>
yup
14:11
<alkisg>
!compiz
14:11
<ltspbot`>
alkisg: "compiz" :: if compiz is giving you problems, one way to disable it for all users is: sudo gconftool-2 --direct --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory --type string --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager metacity
14:11
<Lns>
lol alkisg
14:11
<robb_>
I allso updated ssh-keys and image
14:11
<Lns>
would compiz actually prevent the user from logging in?
14:11cliebow has joined #ltsp

<alkisg>
It would accept the password and then crash X causing ldm to reappear
14:12
<abeehc>
compiz will eat your young
14:12
<alkisg>
It's the most common cause for 1 user logging in and another not
14:12
<cliebow>
jammcq: anything to know before bts?
14:12
<robb_>
I don't think I have compiz active....
14:12
<mgariepy>
i've seen compiz crashing X when the video card doesn't support dual screen with compiz and stuff.
14:13
<robb_>
and on the same terminal.. I can log in with my own account and not with the newly created account
14:14
so I'm a bit puzzled why
14:14
<mgariepy>
robb_, do you uses dual screens ?
14:14
<alkisg>
robb_: it's enabled by default, so if that's the problem, you need to disable it
14:14
<robb_>
no
14:14
no dual screens
14:15salomon_ has joined #ltsp

<robb_>
is there a console command to disable compiz?
14:15
<alkisg>
Actually I don't think that's exactly compiz but the default window manager, whatever that is... gnomewm? Replacing it with metacity works though
14:15
Yes, see above
14:15
<robb_>
gnome
14:15
<jammcq>
cliebow: HEY !!!!
14:16
<alkisg>
We need to file a bug for that, causes grief to many ltsp users :)
14:17
<robb_>
so I can edit in gconf-editor....??
14:17
<alkisg>
robb_: I wrote a command above, you can try that.
14:17
OK let me write it again

14:18
<mgariepy>
robb_, yes you can set is as mandatory with gconf-editor if you have root access
14:18
but the commands is quite easy to copy/paste too :)
14:18

Hi alkisg, I read that the LTSP has problem with OpenBox, which is the window manager that LXDE uses, do you think LTSP works fine with XFCE instead of LXDE?
14:21

No idea, you can ask in the channel though, maybe other people know :)

Took months of digging, but we finally figured it out. Dbus was locking up after it hit the 1024 per-process file handle limit at around 50 users. Just wondering how widespread those same symptoms are within the LTSP fold.

Once it locks up, no users can log in and existing application slowly become unusable. Very annoying and tough to diagnose since DBUS creating almost no usable logging.

Is there a way to set up 4 or 5 PCs to function as an LTSP server? I've read up on the cluster, and it looks like things are distributed across the cluster, such that if any server died, the whole thing would go down. I'm wondering if it would be possible to setup the ltsp servers sort of like RAID, where if one of machines died, the clients would just boot from another server.
15:09
<mgariepy>
atkuepker, adding the configuration to /etc/security/limits.conf works quite well too.

yes, it was 1) the user didn't have write access to that directory or 2) they weren't putting a file extension on it and OO3.1 was complaing or 3) we never did figure it out and remove and re-installed OO.org completely which fixed it.
