good morning
08:04
i have an ltsp server on ubuntu 1204 (precise) 64-bit, with ltsp client in /opt/ltsp/i386 for i386 pxe clients... however they only boot into initramfs, what could i do to debug, get it to work?

<markit>
hi, a friend of mine has all clients x86_64. Is it better have a chroot of 32 bit or 64? and the host?
09:58
I've heard and seen some tests where 64 bit reduce latency and increase performances, but I think eats more memory (in theory, just for integers...)
10:01
<Hyperbyte>
It's simple. You use 64-bit when your processor supports it and 32-bit when it doesn't.
10:03
If you have a 64-bit capable host, you use a 64-bit os on the host. If you have 64-bit capable clients, you use a 64-bit client chroot.

Hyperbyte: hi, as I said, I've been asked for a suggestion by a friend
13:34
so far I've always deployed 32 bit in chroot, since my clients are not 64 bit
13:35
and following alkisg's suggestion, 32bit pae for the server too
13:54

Where did alkisg suggest that?

Hyperbyte: because 32 bits saves ram, and if you have to update the server and then the chroot, you can share the same apt cache, with a big bandwidth, time and effort savings

<vagrantc>
so, with lightdm on xubuntu 12.04, somehow the login managerdistinguishes between xfce and xubuntu.
20:19
with LDM, it doesn't seem to be the case.
20:19
both xfce.desktop and xubuntu.desktop have Exec=startxfce4
20:19
i think LDM only pays attention to the Exec line, not whatever magic distinguishes the two
20:19
so even if you select xubuntu, it just logs in with xfce.
20:19* vagrantc wonders if lubuntu has similar problems.
20:20
<vagrantc>
and i really wonder, what magic does lightdm do that makes it work.
20:20
i haven't tested with newer versions of LDM, which re-worked that code a lot, but i sus pect it has the same problem- it doesn't seem to do anything except run the Exec line.

<alkisg>
vagrantc: ldm doesn't run /etc/profile*, could that be related?
20:22
<vagrantc>
dunno how
20:22
<alkisg>
By setting env vars or something...
20:23
<vagrantc>
don't see any such vars
20:24
<alkisg>
Not in profile.d/ either, right?
