I have just installed ltsp on my feisty machine. It works fine, I was able to connect a client to in instantly with no problems on the client side. However when I come to login to the server directly, it take ages to login and complains that it can not connect to gnome-settings-daemon. Once logged in, everything runs really slowly. Can anyone help?

<BlueRaid>

09:32
<Dorphalsig>
My LTSP server shuts down after some time of inactivity
09:33
I'm unsure if it is ACPI
09:33
<BlueRaid>
what is you distri?
09:33
<Dorphalsig>
umm feisty
09:33

09:34
<BlueRaid>

Is there anyway to utilize gdm as the login screen and still have sound and local mounting of usb sticks?

<boxrock>
can someone tell me how to add firefox extensions (like adblock) to my LTSP server so all users will access them?
11:31
<sbalneav>
boxrock: You'd put them into the /usr/lib/firefox directory.
11:32
<boxrock>
under components or extensions perhaps?
11:32
<sbalneav>
mattwalston: what version of ltsp are you using?
11:33
boxrock: There should be a plugins dir.
11:37
<mattwalston>
5.0 from the ltsp-standalone package in ubuntu 7.04
11:37
<sbalneav>
mattwalston: Well, if you use gdm, you won't get sound and localdevices. Any reason why you want gdm?
11:38
<mattwalston>
sbalneav: the ability for users to choose another server
11:39
<sbalneav>
Just so you're aware, we're hoping to have server selection as an option for Gutsy, with the standard ldm.
11:39
<mattwalston>
sbalneav: and the thin clients only have a 400 MHz via proc so I am concerned about all the ssh encryption
11:39
sbalneav: looking foward to it
11:39
<sbalneav>
Well, if you can do without the server choosing, there's an updated ldm you can download for feisty that allows you to use standard x
11:40
<mattwalston>
sbalneav: will definetly look at it, where is it located?
11:41
<sbalneav>
!ldm
11:41
<ltspbot`>
sbalneav: Error: "ldm" is not a valid command.
11:41
<sbalneav>
hm
11:41
ltspbot`: learn ldm as You can find the updated ldm that supports the LDM_DIRECTX parameter for bypassing ssh encryption at http://alburg.net/ldm
11:41
<ltspbot`>
sbalneav: The operation succeeded.
11:41

sbalneav: "ldm" is You can find the updated ldm that supports the LDM_DIRECTX parameter for bypassing ssh encryption at http://alburg.net/ldm
11:41
<sbalneav>
right there :)
11:42
<mattwalston>
thanks
11:43
sbalneav: I think I need to learn more about python, that is a huge help as i want to make some minor tweaks and had no idea ldm was in an interperated language
11:43
<sbalneav>
Well, it's currently being re-written
11:43
by me :)
11:43
It'll be in C for speed in Gutsy.
11:44
<mattwalston>
sbalneav: oh ok
11:44
<sbalneav>
The python version was slow on older machines.
11:44
<mattwalston>
well a nice option would be to be able to relocate the widgets and hide them depending on the theme used
11:44
<sbalneav>
Which widgets?
11:45
<mattwalston>
the restart, shutdown, and language and session
11:46
<sbalneav>
I don't think we have any plans to hide them, you pretty much need them all :)
11:46
<mattwalston>
i don't deal with very technically gifted users and hiding session and language would save me a couple of headaches
11:47
if the client is diskless, why can't you just hit the power button after logging off?
11:47
<sbalneav>
Well, file a wishlist bug, if you'd like.
11:48
<mattwalston>
sbalneav: i might, maybe a few generations away
11:48
sbalneav: do you think anyone is receptive to the idea of being able to move the controls around via the theme, like in gdm?
11:50
<sbalneav>
Someone would have to program it. Currently the greeter's in C, so we'd have to add in a lot more theming than we've got. Which, of course, makes the the greeter more complicated, and hence slower.
11:51
Probably the way to go would be to write multiple greeters.
11:51
<mattwalston>
oh, i am much of a programmer but would it be possible to have a backend and multiple front end components to the greeter to increase maintainablity?
11:51
<sbalneav>
A less complicated one with less configurability, and more complicated one with better theming.
11:51
Well, that's what we have now.
11:52
The greeter is separate from the display manager itself.
11:52
So you can rewrite the greeter without affecting the display manager proper.
11:53
Certainly, for gutsy, it would be fairly easy to just grab the source of the greeter, and simply REMOVE the elements you don't want, and maintain your own local greeter.
11:53
That would be a possible option.
