06:23 | Hi im running ubuntu 9.04 ltsp, im connected through thin client. Now I installed Latest flash plugin from adobe site and every time i use Firefox to view youtube vids the firfox browser closes or disapears after 30 seconds
| |
06:23 | whats the problem here
| |
06:31 | <alkisg> garymc: don't go to the adobe site for the flash plugin, do this instead: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras.
| |
06:32 | <garymc> do i have to uninstall the one ive already installed?

| |
09:09 | 1) build the launcher and then copy it to /etc/xdg/autostart
| |
09:09 | 2) create a user and put all the stuff on the desktop that you want, then you can write a quick script that will copy /Desktop to each new user

09:56 | <cliebow> garymc..ive used a hack that does an ls of /home and copies to a file ..then reads the file and cuts the username out..and feeds that to a loop whic copies a file to /home/username/Desktop
| |
09:56 | <garymc> is it easy to implement
| |
09:56 | <Blinny> /etc/xdg/autostart doesn't put a launcher on users' desktops
| |
09:57 | <garymc> I just want Add customer.html to be on the desktop each time an employee logs in

| |
09:59 | <Blinny> garymc: for i in `ls /home`; do cp /path/to/launcher.desktop $i/Desktop; done

15:19 | <johnny> davew, the profile editor works the same on others.. as in.. it doesn't..
| |
15:20 | davew, i'd recommend trying sbalneav's ppa package on ubuntu
| |
15:20 | the next version for gnome 2.28 should have some much needed fixes
| |
15:20 | * Ryan52 is still coming down from an adrenaline rush when my database got DoSed...
15:20 | <davew> because of a Sabayon problem - Bug No 150068 it doesn't - but as I say I have had to leave ubuntu behind.
| |
15:21 | <johnny> that bug exists in general.. on all distros
| |
15:21 | unless those folks have patches they aren't sharing
| |
15:21 | * Ryan52 wonders if johnny is going to explain why he pinged me..
15:21 | <davew> I have tried sbalneav's package but it made no difference on mu Ubuntu.
| |
15:21 | <johnny> davew, but as said.. there's an ubuntu package to fix it
| |
15:21 | well.. talk to him to see if you can get him to bump it
| |
15:21 | you're not likely to get a fixed version on other distros as you are on ubuntu
| |
15:23 | <davew> So I can't use LTSP - if these people are creating packages which are not complete or checked aren't we all stuffed ?
| |
15:23 | <johnny> well.. they didn't have to publish the new version..
| |
15:23 | and coul have just ripped it out of the distro
| |
15:23 | but.. it isn't installed by default or anything
| |
15:24 | davew, it turns out there is a HUGE mismatch between the number of those who need the program and those who are interested in developing it
| |
15:24 | davew, if you and other people who needed that program so bad.. would all pony up some loot.. you could probably hire somebody to fix all the bugs
| |
15:25 | but as i said.. most of the big time issues are fixed in the next version
| |
15:25 | <davew> When I started this I took open suse got it installed and I find that on 15 machines (Dell Optiplex) LTSP works fine, but on the Dimension 2400's it won't.
| |
15:26 | <Lns> davew: there *are* other ways to lock down/configure profiles beyond Sabayon, that people have been using (think gconf)...
| |
15:26 | though sabayon greatly reduces the learning curve to doing this, what's being done under the hood can still be done by an admin
| |
15:28 | <davew> Anything can be done - but what is easier than making all clients part of a group, and then setting up a profile for the group/
| |
15:29 | <Lns> davew: nothing I can think of =) Of course we're not talking about simplicity right now, we're talking about actually getting the goal accomplished, right?
| |
15:29 | <johnny> Lns, i was developing on sabayon.. but i got stumped at what happens between the main sabayon wrapper app and the xnest/xephyr window
| |
15:29 | and that was where the problems were
| |
15:29 | but.. now sabayon will always use xephyr
| |
15:29 | which is awesome
| |
15:29 | <Lns> sbalneav is working wonders for sabayon..he's put so much time into fixing it, we should all send him a pint =)
| |
15:29 | <alkisg> davew: well, right clicking on a group and selecting a task :) (instead of a profile which would take some time to prepare)
| |
15:29 | <johnny> it supports all the X extensions that Xnest never could
| |
15:30 | like damange
| |
15:30 | damage*
| |
15:30 | perhaps i'll be able to work on it again
| |
15:30 | davew, i myself put some work in fixing some things in sabayon.. but i just didn't know enough X internals and python xlib interaction to be able to complete it
| |
15:30 | somebody else finally did.. just not soon enough for Jaunty
| |
15:31 | <Lns> davew: check out https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/GnomeOptimize in the meantime, and check the links out at the bottom too. You'll find a lot of useful information.
| |
15:31 | <davew> The real problem with this is that apart from Ubuntu, all of the other distros I have used seem to have problems with the Dimension 2400 - have you any thoghts on that ?
| |
15:31 | <Lns> davew: you need to give us more info on why they're not working
| |
15:31 | have you troubleshot at all?
| |
15:33 | <Ahmuck-Sr> afternoon
| |
15:34 | <davew> I honestly don't know. I did get a few pointers from cyberorg to try with Open Suse, but not enough to clear the proble. I am a bit up against it. I need a system that works and having half that won't is no good at all hence the ubuntu and K12 Linux attempts
| |
15:34 | <Ahmuck-Sr> davew, considered LDAP and NFS ?
| |
15:35 | davew: why do you want a ltsp system. what do you gain?
| |
15:35 | davew: i'm asking to find out where you are and why? i'm using ltsp and am interested
| |
15:37 | <davew> Control. I am using a Fedora Core Server and Windows XP clients which communicate via Samba. This is for educational use and I don't want to have to treat each machine as a n individualk and lock it down via Windows
| |
15:40 | There are also financial restrictions on hardware and we are working on a shoe string
| |
15:40 | <johnny> who isn't...
| |
15:40 | <Ahmuck-Sr> so, fedora server, windows clients, and ltsp to control them all
| |
15:41 | brb, need to pick up parents
| |
15:41 | <Lns> davew: what are the specific aspects of the environment you need to lock down?
| |
15:42 | <johnny> i'm confused.. windows clients and linux clients right?
| |
15:42 | <davew> No - That's what we are currently using. Idea is new LTSP server and use the existing machines as Thin Clients
| |
15:42 | <johnny> ok yes
| |
15:43 | <davew> Being honest having seen todays episode I have no option but to fall back to Ubuntu and try to come up with the mechanisms for managing the clients
| |
15:44 | If I drop back to the earlier version of Ubuntu, did the LTSP management software work on that ?
| |
15:45 | bobby_C has joined #ltsp
15:45 | <johnny> there's nothing wrong with ubuntu..
| |
15:45 | <alkisg> "LTSP management software" ==> ?
| |
15:45 | * Lns uses ubuntu 8.04 all the time w/ltsp
15:45 | <davew> But there so obviously is
| |
