Hello. I'm trying to get working an LTSP server from a virtual CentOS 6 machine. After following all instructions in http://wiki.ltsp.org/wiki/Category:Fedora and in README.rpminstall, the client cannot boot with this error: "mount.nfs: Connection timed out"
08:19
Where can be the problem?

My network setup is at work (no school). We only have one subnet, and there's a Windows DHCP server, which has already been configured to serve a specific MAC (the thin client test-machine) to the CentOS server. Also, on the CentOS side the dhcpd and dhcpd6 services have been stopped.
08:23
I would thank any help, please.

Hi all. I have a question regarding LTSP. Can I use USB ports on the clients? I need to use smartcard readers to log in to government web services.... So the reader should plug in to the client and Firefox should be able to access the reader

anyone ever use Mac's as clients?
13:19
I can get 'em up using iPXE on a disk
13:19
I'd love to not do that though
13:20
<||cw>
other_other_joe: depends on the mac
13:21
EFI based ones it would be technically possible to have EFI pxe boot, but I don't know if apple has locked out some bits to make it not possible
13:21
G5 and older, you need ipxe locally
13:22
<other_other_joe>
they're intel EFI's
13:22
as far as I know though, apple has some weird EFI 1.5/EFI 2 custom hybrid

hello :)
20:17
<alkisg>
Hi
20:18
<Chris_____>
May i ask a couple of things?
20:18
<alkisg>
!ask
20:18
<ltsp`>
ask: Don't ask to ask a question, simply ask it, and if someone knows the answer, they'll respond. Please hang around for at least a full hour after asking a question, as not everybody constantly monitors the channel.
20:19
<Chris_____>
Ok, thanks. I would like to know the best way to give the shutdown and reboot command from a terminal (for itself)
20:20
<alkisg>
Is this related to LTSP at all?
20:20
<Chris_____>
i'm using openbox with only a browser, and on a touch panel where i must remap F1~F4
20:20
<alkisg>
With "terminal" you mean "ltsp client"?
20:20
<Chris_____>
oh sorry, yes, i'm using debian for it
20:21
<alkisg>
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~epoptes/epoptes/trunk/view/head:/epoptes-client/endsession
20:21
Save this somewhere and call it to shutdown/reboot whatever
20:21
It works in most environments, not only lxde
20:21
It's part of...
20:21
!epoptes
20:21
<ltsp`>
epoptes: Epoptes is a computer lab administration and monitoring tool. It works on Ubuntu and Debian based labs with LTSP or non-LTSP servers, thin and fat clients, standalone workstations, NX clients etc. More info: http://www.epoptes.org
20:22
<Chris_____>
i read about that, but i mean, i want only to use shutdown and reboot command
20:22
<alkisg>
Yup, it has shutdown, reboot and logout
20:22
So just don't use the logout command.
20:23
<Chris_____>
ok, i will try it, because ssh works but on this client i think is really too slow
20:23
thankyou
20:23
<alkisg>
You're welcome
20:24
<Chris_____>
and the last, is, i noticed that the client (it's old and is with a transmeta crosue... a panic) is really slow in connecting to xorg

20:25
<alkisg>
!directx

<ltsp`>
directx: If you want to turn off encryption to the workstation, which will speed up performance at the cost of security, you need to specify LDM_DIRECTX=True in your lts.conf file. Type !docs in IRC to get a link to the current documentation
20:25
<alkisg>
Directx has the same speed as xdmcp
20:25
So there's no need to use xdmcp at all

hi, who can tell me how to capture the client's screenshot using command line? thank you in advance.
20:28
<vagrantc>
that wouldn't be helped by directx
20:28
<steven_lkz>
i installed epoptes, and can see the client's screen
20:29
<Chris_____>
i', not used to irc, i read now about encryption, it's because that i asek for xdmcp
20:29
I'm
20:30
<alkisg>
steven_lkz: Phantomas is planning a new epoptes version that will have a console front-end... until then, you could do it with ssh + epoptes' /usr/share/epoptes-client/get-display
20:30
<vagrantc>
Chris_____: yes, but xdmcp wouldn't help much either
20:30
Chris_____: it *might* help to use NBD instead of NFS
20:31
<Chris_____>
:D yes, i noticed that ubuntu used that solution, instead of nfs with debian
20:31
<vagrantc>
it has it's trade-offs, but is definitely a bit faster to boot
20:31
debian wheezy should be fairly easy to switch back and forth between the two... although i haven't yet written up good documentation about it
20:32
<Chris_____>
but i think that the real problem is the hardware... a strange mainboard made here in italy,
20:32
i think that it's a miracle that it still works :D
20:32
<vagrantc>
quite possible... works fine on other hardware?
20:33
<Chris_____>
in virtualbox is perfect, but i remember also the past, clients are faster than this one
20:33
<steven_lkz>
alkisg: thank you very much.
20:34
<Chris_____>
So vagrantc you are a developper, thankyou very much for the very good work!
20:36
Just for info, if you have time, i read about a connection (cripted or not) from the client to the user on the server, why don't have a sort of command receiver on the client in order to receive commands ? (like shutdown)
20:36
<vagrantc>
Chris_____: glad it works for you :)
20:37
Chris_____: we have great plans for LTSP6 :)
20:37
but maybe integrating something like parts of epoptes directly into LTSP would be a good idea...
20:38
<steven_lkz>
alkisg: i've found get-display script, but how to use it?
20:38
<alkisg>
steven_lkz: export $(/path/to/get-display); now you have access to X

in my case, i must install about 34 touch panels, each one near a press (for plastic mouldings)
20:40
<alkisg>
steven_lkz: do you know how to automatically get screenshots in a non-ltsp environment?
20:40
<steven_lkz>
alking: no, can u give me a link?

<alkisg>
Nope, I don't have any
20:41
<Chris_____>
only browser & pdf reader. Now the last problem is how to manage people that cutoff the power on the terminals :D
20:41
<steven_lkz>
alkisg: thank u anyway. i'll try
20:41
<alkisg>
steven_lkz: you'd need a cronjob or shell script that would get access to the X display, and then call a screenshot program
20:42
get-display is the first part, and screenshot/imagemagick the second part
20:42
But you'll need a bit of shell knowledge to fill in the missing bits...
20:43
<steven_lkz>
you mean i need to export get-display?
20:43
<alkisg>
Yes, that's one of the parts needed
20:44
<steven_lkz>
can u give me complete export command?
20:44
<Chris_____>
Thankyou again guys, see you ^^
20:44
<alkisg>
(11:38:25 μμ) alkisg: steven_lkz: export $(/path/to/get-display); now you have access to X

Ah, you mean the path?
20:45
<steven_lkz>
export $(/usr/share/epoptes-client/get-display)?
20:45
<alkisg>
export $(/usr/share/epoptes-client/get-display)
20:45
Yeah
20:45
<steven_lkz>
thank u, i'll try
20:45
<alkisg>
!flash-no-sse2 | echo vagrantc:
20:45
<ltsp`>
vagrantc: flash-no-sse2: The latest flash plugin is compiled with SSE2 instructions and thus segfaults on older CPUs. A workaround for LTSP fat clients/localapps is available in http://ts.sch.gr/repo/pool/main/f/flashplugin-no-sse2/flashplugin-no-sse2_11.1.102.63-2_i386.deb (to be installed in i386 chroots).
20:46
<alkisg>
;)
20:46
(contains the init-ltsp.d script)
20:46
(as well as the flash.so)
20:46
<vagrantc>
ah.
20:47
that makes it pretty simple.
20:47
<alkisg>
Yup, a dpkg -i away...
20:47
It indeed made more sense that way, instead of including it to upstream ltsp
20:47
Although... you know.
20:48
<vagrantc>
well, we certainly couldn't include the flash.so
20:48
in ltsp
20:49
<alkisg>
Of course not; it's not even an ltsp-specific problem, it affects any non-sse2-capable cpu
20:49
(it also generates a settings.js for firefox to ignore the old plugin version)
20:52
<steven_lkz>
alkisg: i've exported get-display, then i run screenshot, where is screen saved?
20:53
alkisg: what is the format of screenshot? i want to capture a user's screen.
