hi
04:14
does the current ltsp work with slackware ?
04:19
<johnny>
rauz, it would have to be created for slackware
04:19
it's distro specific
04:19
each distro has to build a build-client plugin which builds the chroot and write init scripts to boot the client environment
04:20
quite a few people have came in here to ask about a slackware build, but nobody wants to write one

<elias_a>
rauz: What is it gonna be this time? :D
04:22
Just teasing. Is there really a reason not to use Ubuntu or Debian?
04:31
<rauz>
i have no problem to use debian i'm not realy familiar with debian so i thought i ask for slackware
04:33
<elias_a>
I would set up my first LTSP on Ubuntu. After that I would think over.
04:35
<rauz>
ok i will try it with ubuntu thx for helping me
04:37
<elias_a>
rauz: You're welcome. Stay on the channel! :)

Can you attach files to emails directed to ltsp-discuss ?
09:48
<vagrantc>
Blinny: i think so, though there may be some size limits or something
09:48
Blinny: in general, better to post a URL
09:50
<Blinny>
D'oh
09:50
just clicked send
09:51
I just pasted into the email. That's probably a nono. I have no netiquette.
09:53
vagrantc: Perhaps you can answer - to what package should I file that nbd bug?
09:53
tcpd, inetd, ltsp?
09:54jhutchins_lt has joined #ltsp
09:54
<vagrantc>
Blinny: if it's just plain text, probably fine.
09:54
Blinny: which nbd bug?
09:55
<Blinny>
I've been detailed in ltsp-discuss the last few days. nbd-server processes aren't being killed after client shutdown.
09:56
I see it on Hardy, but another user reported similar results on Lucid.
09:56
abeehc- (in this channel) reported 600+ nbd-server processes yesterday on his 30-client server.
10:06
<vagrantc>
wow
10:06* vagrantc should try and confirm on debian
10:06
<vagrantc>
seems like something borked the keepalive stuff
10:07
i wonder if there's some other service you could test keepalive with, to test if it's just nbd that's having the problem
10:08
<Blinny>
Yeah. I have tons of RAM, but on Hardy nbd_swap fills up my 8GB /tmp pretty quickly and I'm considering cron'ing server reboots.
10:09
<vagrantc>
ouch
10:10* vagrantc wonders if somehow the name matching in /etc/hosts.allow is borked
10:10
<Blinny>
The thing is, I can't figure out what update was the first domino.
10:10
Yeah.
10:10
<vagrantc>
Blinny: have you tried an older kernel?
10:11
i.e. a security update might have caused the issue
10:11
<Blinny>
I don't think so: http://pastebin.com/S0eB3ZD6
10:11
I have tried the -27 kernel. Not yet -26 or earlier
10:11
<vagrantc>
Blinny: another thing worth exploring is switching to NFS until it can get sorted out...
10:12
though you'd still have the nbdswap problems...
10:12
<Blinny>
Right. And those are the only show-stoppers for me.
10:12
(Speaking selfishly of course ;)
10:13
<vagrantc>
ah
10:13
the nbdroot isn't causing so much trouble?
10:13
<Blinny>
Like I said, I have tons of RAM.
10:14
I was fortunate to over-engineer in planning for future growth.
10:15
<vagrantc>
i wonder if you'd need to try an older kernel on both the server and the clients, too ...
10:15
<Blinny>
Hmm. I am fully up to date on the client side too.
10:16
Did you read that thread in ltsp-discuss?
10:16
<vagrantc>
since it affects both lucid and hardy, you could probably figure out which packages between the two dists have recently recieved the same/similar updates
10:16
<Blinny>
Looks to me like the server isn't sending the keepalive requests
10:16
<vagrantc>
Blinny: i've read over it... but haven't had too many ideas to contribute that weren't already said
10:17
<Blinny>
I take that as a compliment!
10:17
I must be doing the gruntwork correctly then.
10:17
<vagrantc>
Blinny: sounds fairly good.
10:17cyberorg has quit IRC
10:17
<vagrantc>
i don't know why, but my hunch is trying older kernel versions
10:17MornignSon has joined #ltsp
10:18
<Blinny>
Yeah, that was my first hunch too. I guess I should have followed it further than one version regression.
10:18
<vagrantc>
i think it's the one thing i know gets updated semi-regularly
10:18
Blinny: you can check /var/log/dpkg.log* to determine when a given package was updated
10:19
you can try to compare it to when the problem started happening
10:20
<Blinny>
Yeh. I went to 2.6.24-28.71 on July 9th. That's when things hit the fan, so that's why I tried downgrading to -27
10:21
Interesting idea that I should downgrade both client and server kernels
10:25
I'm now kicking them both back to -26 on one of my servers.
10:36
OK. Tonight we'll be back to -26
