hi, is there any possibility to launch a thin client against a ltsp server remotely? (via any vpn that tunnels ethernet or something?)

<DJUnreal>
or the way PXE works :P
17:49
only way i could see that working is a point-to-point firewall based VPN lol
17:51
<Hyperbyte>
DJUnreal, no
17:52
LTSP doesn't have to PXE
17:52
You can write the whole LTSP chroot including lts.conf to a USB stick, for example
17:52
And then boot that
17:52
<DJUnreal>
true
17:52
<Hyperbyte>
Doesn't even need VPN, it can work over the internet.
17:52
Just not the PXE part.
17:52
<DJUnreal>
but he specifically said a 'thin client'
17:52
:P
17:53
<Hyperbyte>
Well it all depends if you define thin client as a computer without any storage medium, or as a computer which runs it's software on a central server
17:58
<DJUnreal>
true that

We almost ended up to use ltsp in our cloud enviroment, but nbd failed in critical point.

20:36
<muppis>
DJUnreal, yep. We use that now.
20:38
<alkisg>
muppis: what was the reason nbd failed?
20:39
<muppis>
alkisg, switching from server to another.
20:40
<alkisg>
You mean when one server goes down, another to take its place?
20:40
<muppis>
Even using same IP all the time, didn't survive from that.
20:40
Yez.
20:40
(I hate onscreen kb..)
20:41
<alkisg>
I think the reconnection feature of nbd is broken, so you'd have to use nbd-proxy or xnbd for that..
20:41
...or find/submit the proper bug fix for the nbd module
20:42
<muppis>
That was a year ago, running good now. :)

<alkisg>
Well, for the future, I want to look on how to export btrfs snapshots without exporting the whole disk
20:44
E.g. the btrfs formatted server boots, then one does a btrfs snapshot, runs a cleanup phase (removing passwords etc), and exports the result in a couple of seconds,
20:45
I don't know which network-exportable file system will be best suited for that...
20:45
<muppis>
Me neither.
20:47
But now to catch some sxleep.
20:49
<baptiste>
what about sshfs, it's kind of dumb using it for anything but it's what I end up doing for my personal and small scale uses.
20:50komunista has joined IRC (komunista!~slavko@adsl-195-168-246-126.dynamic.nextra.sk)
20:51
<alkisg>
Btrfs offers compression, but if it's exported via nfs or sshfs, then it's decompressed on the server, not on the client, so that makes it require more network bandwidth
20:51
NBD exports the whole device as a block, so the decompression then happens on the client
20:52
I guess the best implementation would be "NBD but with the sectors not within the snapshot to be reported as zero-filled"

21:00
<||cw>
did you install and configure it?
21:01

i used "plain" ltsp installation
21:01
<||cw>
well, if you want client usb on the host, you use ltspfs, as I understand it. I've not done it myself
21:02
just like if you want a client printer on the host, you use CUPS
21:02
<uskerine>
so what should i do?
21:04
<||cw>
uh, install it?
21:06

is there anyone who has actually managed to get usb memory sticks running on the thin client?

<baptiste>
I've done something stupid to use a hard drive plugged in the ltsp fat client (not thin client). I mounted it and launched a sshd as root (copy missing ssh keys with scp from /etc/ssh on the server). then I can access the hard drive partition with sshfs. this has no relation to using memory sticks on thin clients but it's fun and useful (80GB of free storage for movies)
21:23
<uskerine>
i would definitively fell more comfortable with someone who has actually previously installed
21:24
i would definitively feel more comfortable with someone who has actually previously installed (i mean usb memory stick support in thin/fat clients)

Nor localapps... either plain thin, or plain fat
21:32
Fat clients automatically see usb sticks without ltspfs
21:33
baptiste: users in the sudo group have local disk access for fat clients without ltspfs/sshfs etc
21:33
If you want non-sudoers to have access too, you'd have to adjust policykit
21:34
<uskerine>

21:35
what's happening ?
21:35
<alkisg>
That's because it's mounted by the user on the server
21:35
Normal udisks behavior, disks are readable only for the user that mounted them, not related to ltsp

AFAIK usb sticks on the client should be automatically mounted even on xubuntu, but desktop shortcuts for them only appear in gnome
21:37

alright. but to be clear, I'm accessing the hard drive from the server (my workstation). I'm using ltsp as a poor man's NAS

just in case somebody is interested, adding LOCAL_STORAGE=yes in lts.conf will auto mount on /media/username/ the usb stick
21:51
this can be accessed directly from the thin client, although no icon is automatically created in the file manager (at least in xubuntu)
