Hmm?
08:37
<alkisg>
RAM swap? Or NBD swap?
08:38
<muppis>
RAM swap.
08:38
<alkisg>
I don't think compcache or ramz are used by default now...

<ltsp>
nocompcache: compcache is a module that compresses 25% of the client RAM and uses it as swap space. In LTSP we have NBD_SWAP though, so it's better to disable compcache by putting nocompcache as a kernel parameter in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default

good morning
08:50
i need some suggestions
08:50
i have a squeeze filesystem and I'm opening terminal sessions using LDM
08:51
the problem is that some aplications like firefox, thunderbird don't have the same appearence or the same theme
08:51
what can I do to force these applications to have the same theme that is selected on the ubuntu?
08:55
<alkisg>
Are they running locally, as localapps, or normally on the server, through the thin session?
08:56
<ltspuser_76>
they are running on the server...
08:56
i only opens a LDM session on the server
08:57
<alkisg>
And e.g. gnome-terminal has the correct theme, while firefox doesn't?
08:57
And the server is Ubuntu?

<markit>
hi alkisg :) I've not been able to ssh in the fat client yesterday, even if I set a root password in chroot and rebuild the nbd image
11:24
I got an error about broken pipe or something like that (I'm at work now)
11:24
I've googled and changed ssh_config as suggested but without success
11:24
are you sure it works? I can ping the fat from the server, and I've no firewall
11:25
nmap fatip shows port 22 open|filtered
11:43
<alkisg>
markit: yes, I'm sure it works, and also right click => root terminal from epoptes works
11:43
And finally, SCREEN_02=shell also works
11:43
<markit>
SCREEN_02=shell works fine
11:44
but I need to ssh from my PC to the fat client
11:44
<alkisg>
How did you set the root password?
11:44
<markit>
so I can capture video or do other stuff with more ease
11:44
<alkisg>
You can't capture video with ssh
11:44
<markit>
alkisg: ltsp-chroot someparams
11:44
<alkisg>
You have no access to the user DISPLAY there
11:44
Although with epoptes, you do
11:44
<markit>
alkisg: I capture terminal with KRecordDesktop or whatever
11:44
I just need the terminal output
11:44
<alkisg>
KRecordDesktop can access any user display?
11:45
<markit>
no no :)
11:45
I record the black terminal :)
11:45
but then I can re-view in slow motion the iotop -o
11:45
<alkisg>
Haha
11:45
<markit>
or iftop
11:45
so I chrooted and issued # passwd
11:45
setting the password, correct?
11:46
<alkisg>
That's to be able to login to the client
11:46
<markit>
in chroot I was root... or am I wrong?
11:46
<alkisg>
In order to ssh, you'll also need to install sshd, and enable remote root logins
11:46
<markit>
yes, I want to login in the fat client
11:46
I've also installed in chroot the openssh-server
11:46
and checked /etc/ssh/sshD-config
11:46
and "permitrootlogin" was "yes"
11:46
I rebuild the NBD image
11:47
<alkisg>
Can you test things now?
11:47
<markit>
no unfortunately I'm at work
11:47
<alkisg>
OK, ping me when you can
11:47
<markit>
hope to meet you tonight
11:47
thanks in advance :)
11:47
I've emailed in KDE devs and they ask more info
11:47
so I need to ssh there and see what is plasma doing
11:48
alkisg: last question
11:48
you told me that iftop shows only 35MB when you login from LDM to gnome
11:48
but how can it be that all the gnome DE is only 35MB of code?
11:48
<alkisg>
It's not
11:48
A login only accesses the stuff it needs
11:49
You don't need to load the gnome-calculator or totem in order to login...
11:49
<markit>
well, and in only 35MB it has a working DE?
11:49
with menu, theme, icons...
11:49
incredible
11:49
<alkisg>
Sure. But remember that thin clients use shared libraries
11:50
So if a library (gnome*) is already loaded, then the user doesn't need to load it again
11:50
<markit>
well, FAT has to grab it
11:50
<alkisg>
Ah yes we tried fats
11:50
<markit>
each FAT has to get one copy from the server
11:50
yep :)
11:50
with thin kde works fine too
11:50
<alkisg>
Then sure, 35mb it is
11:51
<markit>
so also if you boot from hd, you load linux + gnome that is only 35 MB...
11:51
should boot superfast
11:51
but that sounds incredible... it should also eat only some MB of ram
11:51
<alkisg>
We measured *after* ldm, right?
11:51
<markit>
yes
11:51
<alkisg>
So linux was already loaded
11:52
<markit>
but Linux is 60MB more or less (I measured from boot to ldm)
11:52
<alkisg>
I think I onced measured 50mb there, right
11:52
So in total, 85 mb for me
11:52
<markit>
isn't that ldm uses some gnome libs itself?
11:52
<alkisg>
That's about 10 seconds disk access for 100mbps clients
11:52
Yes, ldm uses gtk
11:52
<markit>
I boot with kde in my workstation in about 1 minute :(
11:52
<alkisg>
I've had fat clients boot in 12 secs
11:53
<markit>
we are in different planets :)
11:53
wondering lxde what would do
11:53
<alkisg>
Maybe ditch KDE then and switch to Gnome or LXDE
11:54
<markit>
alkisg: well, I've instaleld kde everywhere, teachers have learned it
11:54
and also I've spent a lot of time for global settings etc
11:54
I whould start it again...
11:54
<alkisg>
Global settings are not even needed with gnome :D
11:54
<markit>
no?
11:54
<alkisg>
(the stuff about caching etc)
11:55
I think i've read about optimizing some parts of kde for ltsp
11:55
I haven't seen anyone need that with gnome
11:55
<markit>
how can it be? If I want to "impose" a menu to all clients? or disabling some behaviour?
11:55
<alkisg>
No, not those
11:55
Some global kde* caches, indexing etc
11:55
<markit>
I see
11:55Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955
11:55
<alkisg>
You do have to do that, right?
11:55
That part isn't needed in gnome
11:56
<markit>
well, my only hope is collect meaningful data and have some kde dev take care
11:56
the first answer for my message was from the chief kde architect, so is enocuraging :)
11:56
<alkisg>
Btw, for so much disk access, you should switch to nfs...
11:56
Otherwise you'll kill the server CPU
11:57
<markit>
my global settins are some for reducing resources usage, other to customize the DE (like menu, double click to open folders, etc)
11:57
I've to go, see you

does anyone know if you can take an ltsp-cluster and have users authenticate to another AFS network? For example, we control two networks. Right now the ltsp-cluster is set up on our test network, but our production environment is using AFS users and file space. Is there a way we could configure LTSP cluster to authenticate to afs (krb5) that has existing users? Does this make sense? We basically want to integrate LTSP cluster into an existing networ

Hi, I have an Edubuntu 12.04 ltsp system which it is intended will be used with numbers of student classes. In starting to set this up and add clients I attempted to install Thin Client Manager only to bei informed that there seems to be some Python related problem with it
20:29
My intention was to use this to set up the users and groups and then use the grouping with Menu Editor to apply restrictions. Anybody suggest a way forward ?
20:30
<||cw>
I've not used thin client manager, but I do know 12.04 got a pyton update, so maybe it wasn't also updated?
20:30
or maybe just need to install an older python? should be a package for it
20:30
<stgraber>
Davew: oh, I forgot that tcm is still in the archive, someone really needs to remove it...
20:30
Davew: epoptes is probably closer to what you're looking for
20:31
<Davew>
Forgive me but I have not used it, can I add users and groups from here ?
20:34
You have also raised an issue here. How is a mere mortal supposed to know what is current and what isn't ?
20:35
And also what is relevant to what version ?
20:35
<stgraber>
well, what isn't current shouldn't be in the archive, that's the problem here, we apparently forgot to kill it with fire a while ago ;)
20:35
ogra_: I'm not sure, was tcm one of your projects? if so, any reason why we shouldn't get it pulled from the archive for quantal?
20:36
<Davew>
Which archive is this, I have a flame thrower.
20:37
<stgraber>
the ubuntu archive, where all the packages come from by default
20:37
<Davew>
OK I understand.
20:39
<stgraber>
highvoltage, mgariepy: Davew is the author of the latest e-mail to contact@edubuntu.org (just in case one of you is typing an answer)
20:40
<Davew>
I feel that there is a big issue with knowing what programs can be used with what version. Am I correct in saying then that Epoptes should be used with 12.04
20:40
And nothing else.
20:41
<stgraber>
epoptes is the tool we recommend for Edubuntu 12.04, it's installed by default and feature in our documentation and installation slideshow
20:41
<Davew>
And Menu Editor is still relevant to 12.04 ?
20:42
<stgraber>
tcm is an old unsupported tool that unfortunately appears to still show up on the software center... I'll try to have it killed for good in 12.10 (we can't retroactively pull something from a released version)
