<litercola>
Just curious what the difference in performance of an ltsp server is using 1 nic instead of 2?
11:59
Is it significant?
12:01alkisg has joined #ltsp
12:02jhutchins_lt has quit IRC
12:05
<alkisg>
litercola: depending on the hardware (nics, pci-e bus...), the wiring & the configuration (just for internet or for bonding etc) it can vary from totally insignificant to doubling the network speed.
12:06
For the typical setup, 1 nic for ltsp clients and 1 for internet, it usually doesn't make any difference in speed at all
12:07
(unless your internet connection is more than 1% of the lan speed :))
12:07
<litercola>
I have 2 gig nics in the server, gig switches, but the clients only have 100m cards, should i upgrade them?
12:08
<alkisg>
You should definitely disable flow control, that gives you 10 times the speed: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/FlowControl
12:08
How many clients, and how many switches?
12:09
(and those 2 gig nics on the server, are they pci-e or plain pci?)
12:10
<litercola>
pcie on the server, trafic goes through 2 switches at the most, 10 clients is all I will ever need, I think now I have 8
12:10
<alkisg>
8 clients x 100 mbps == at most 800 mbps
12:10
One nic is more than enough
12:10
But you definitely need to disable flow control, if your switch doesn't come with it disabled
12:11
Otherwise you'll get at most 100 mbps, even if the server is gig.
12:11
<litercola>
good deal, with that example, you explained how I should be looking at this, I will check on the switches and look into disabling flow control
12:11
<alkisg>
Of course if your switches are gigabit, then the easiest way is to put gig nics on the clients
12:12
With the best setup, you can get 2000 mbps out of the server
12:12
<litercola>
right, thats what I figured too
12:12
<alkisg>
So, either 100mbps with flow control = on, 800 mbps with flow control = off, or 2000 with some clever nic/switch setup + client nic upgrade
