Hello, I'm migrating from ltsp 4.2 to 5, I dont know where is the lts.conf located and if it has the same structure, besides I'm having troubles setting up the autologin with specific users, is the same way that ltsp 4.2?
09:48
<Gadi>
quiet room today.
09:48
irule: what version of LTSP?
09:48
<g333k_work>
Gadi, yep :(
09:49
<jammcq>
nice and quiet
09:49FernandoMM has joined #ltsp
09:49
<irule>
how can I know the version?
09:49
<Gadi>
g333k_work: same structure as 4.2, but not all configs supported
09:49
irule: how did you install it?
09:49
<irule>
good morning all lol
09:49
a cdrom :D
09:49
<Gadi>
heh. which one?
09:49
:P
09:49
<irule>
I downloaded from ltsp.org
09:49
<g333k_work>
Gadi, is located ion the same place? how can I know what options are not supported?
09:50
<Gadi>
g333k_work: LTSP 5 (ubuntu's version) does not need an lts.conf
09:50
but you can put one in the same place as 4.2
09:50
there should be an lts-parameters.txt file somehwere
09:50
er, somewhere
09:50
jammcq: is there a CD on ltsp.org?
09:51
<irule>
it contains the tsp-kernel-2.6.17.3-ltsp-1-0-i386.ltsp
09:51
among other things ;)
09:51
<Gadi>
hmm, well it sounds like 4.2
09:52
do you remember running a command called "ltsp-build-client" or one called ltspadmin?
09:52
<irule>
/root/ltsp-4.2u2-0.iso du, lol
09:52
<Gadi>
ah
09:52
there ya go
09:52
:)
09:52FernandoMM has quit IRC
09:52
<irule>
ltspadmin only, Ive gone through that already
09:53
<Gadi>
so, whats the point where you get hung up?
09:53
<irule>
where is "ltsp-build-client"?
09:53
<Gadi>
its not
09:53
thats ltsp5
09:53
dont mind that
09:53
<irule>
ramdisk at $%&$%&%, size $%&///7
09:53
<Gadi>
we like to keep things confusing for job security ;)
09:53
<irule>
ok?
09:53
<Gadi>
jk
09:53
<irule>
:s
09:54
well at least you got me confused already lol
09:54
<Gadi>
are there numbers where charlie brown is cursing?
09:54
<irule>
yes
09:54
<Gadi>
are there any lines that precede that one?
09:54
<irule>
and before that it says "top of ramdisk is 0X21632362..."
09:55
yes there are many lines before that, is there a logfile I can pastebin to you?
09:55
dotted lines ;)
09:55
<Gadi>
heh. given that they are ramdisk issues, my first suspicion is bad ram
09:55
do you have a second terminal handy?
09:56
<irule>
not yet :s
09:56
<Gadi>
if its a hardware problem, best not to tear your hair out up front
09:56
hmm...
09:56
what kind of machine?
09:56
can you add/remove/replace any RAM?
09:56
<irule>
but the terminal does have windows 98 installed and I am using an eb-xxx-.com
09:56
and win98 is not complaining about the ram
09:57
should I still replace ram?
09:57
<Gadi>
so you set up your bootloader to dual boot between network and win98?
09:57
or you have the etherboot on a disk?
09:58
<irule>
even easyer, I added the eb-xxx.com into autoexec.bat before it runs win.com so I got a quick terminal ;)
09:58
<Gadi>
hmm... can you try with a straight etherboot disk
09:58
<irule>
nope, eb-xxx.com is on the same hard disk as the win98
09:58
<g333k_work>
Gadi, what about the autologin feature... can you help me to se it up well? when I restart the gdm daemon my clients didnt restart... they keep connected
09:58
<Gadi>
g333k_work: you need to set SCREEN_07=startx
09:58
<irule>
straight etherboot? sounds like I am using a gay disk? lol
09:58
<Gadi>
otherwise you will use ldm by default
09:59
irule: heh. not that there's anything wrong with that. if you have a floppy/cd drive,I would burn a disk and etherboot that way
09:59
(or if you have PXE in the bios....)
09:59
<irule>
ok thanks Gadi Ill try that :)
10:00* Gadi worries about the RAM to load the kernel image not being available because autoexec.bat is already loading
10:00* Gadi never booted that way
10:00
<irule>
my girlfriend's best friend is a hopeless homo, I send them shopping together sometimes and she comes back sparklingly happy afterwards lol
10:01
<jammcq>
wait a sec, your girlfriends best friend.... shouldn't that be you ?
10:02
<irule>
ok, seconf best friend ;) ...it actually was my idea that the go shopping together, so I can do usefull stuff while they try clothes on together
10:02
I still get to take the clothes off at home tho lol
10:03
my girlfriend's clothes only, of course! ;)
10:03
<g333k_work>
Gadi, Oooh, is not working like ltsp 4.2 anymore? from screen_01 in advance?
10:04
<Gadi>
g333k_work: on Ubuntu, ldm runs on screen_07 by default. Im not sure if the lower screens have tty's available
10:04
but, I know screen_07 should work
10:05
note: until sbalneav shares his XDMCP removable media support, you will not have removable media with XDMCP (not sure if he's released this yet or not?)
10:06
but, ldm has no autologin feature
10:06
so if you are looking for autologin + removable media + LTSP5, you will need some hacking atm

10:30
no replies to the mailing list posting
10:30
am i barking up the wrong tree?
10:32
<jammcq>
budgee: what are you expecting?
10:32
<budgee>
jammcq: well, the gentoo guys want to remove ltsp-4.2 from the tree unless it is updated to fix the vnc exploit.
10:32
<jammcq>
ok, what is your proposal?
10:32
<budgee>
must i bypass the ltsp supplied vnc pakage and make gentoo use another?
10:33
<jammcq>
or remove vnc altogether
10:33
all work is going towards LTSP-5
10:33
<budgee>
yes, i understand that.
10:33
<jammcq>
that's where i'd like people to spend their time
10:33
libvnc is used by a very small number of people
10:33
just remove it from the ebuild and move on

if someone had replied to my mail with a "dude, you've go no chance of any work being here, we're all working on ltsp5" i would not have go to such great effort to try "fix" 4.2

10:36
<g333k_work>
Hey buddies! can you help me please? I have lots of doubts about ltsp 5, beginning from where the list of my clients? in the same /etc/hosts file?
10:36
<jammcq>
budgee: I don't think I saw your mail on that. I saw emails a few days ago, but nobody offering to do anything about it
10:36
<sbalneav>
pscheie: Huge new program. Poorly written. Lots of fixes needed to make it usable.
10:37
We went live on Jan 2, it's been hell since then.
10:37
<budgee>
jammcq: kewl thanks, i didn't have any idea ltsp was effectively unmaintained. no problem, but if i did, i would never have bothered trying to provide you guys with a "fix"
10:37
<sbalneav>
g333k_work: Yep, same /etc/hosts
10:37
<jammcq>
it's not so much that it's un-maintained
10:37
<budgee>
jammcq: np, thanks - will workaround for gentoo ebuild and work toward 5
10:37
<jammcq>
but, we never came out with a version for Gentoo. somebody else did that
10:37
<budgee>
jammcq: just that next to nobody uses libnvc
10:38
<jammcq>
the gentoo port was never an official LTSP port
10:38
<g333k_work>
When I put SCREEN_07 = startx in my lts.conf the clients load and I see a X in the middle of the screen
10:38
<budgee>
jammcq: yes, but it is not the gentoo "version" that is the issue, it is the fact that 4.2 uses an exploitable vnc library compiled into x11vnx binary
10:38
<g333k_work>
btw I'm using Xubuntu edgy + ltsp5
10:38
<pscheie>
jammcq: doesn't fl_teachertool use libvnc? (which wouldn't affect the gentoo folks unless they wanted it)
10:39
<budgee>
jammcq: just as far as i can see, the gentoo guys identified it.
10:39
<sbalneav>
g333k_work: Well, you'll need some kind of display manager on the server.
10:39
<jammcq>
budgee: yes, but we don't even load the x11vnc binary
10:39
it's only used by a select few, and even then, they have to do some gymnastics to get it loaded
10:39
<sbalneav>
g333k_work: Either that, or don't use startx, use ldm
10:39
<budgee>
jammcq: then why include it? i assume it was included to allow for "Remote Asssistance"?
10:39
<jammcq>
we included it, cuz we *thought* we'd have remote assistance easily available
10:40
that never happened
10:40
<budgee>
jammcq: oook
10:40
jammcq: never knew that
10:40
<jammcq>
it's what we call "Kruft" :)
10:40
<g333k_work>
sbalneav, Well I'm just commenting that line... but when I restart the gdm daemon my clients keep connected... they dont see the changes in gdm.conf
10:40
<budgee>
jammcq: i just saw them bitchin about the exploit and wanting it fixed otherwise they'd remove it
10:40
jammcq: if it is not useful, i'll just remove the libvncserver package from the ebuild
10:40
<sbalneav>
g333k_work: You'll probably need to enable xdmcp in gdm
10:41
<budgee>
jammcq: thanks
10:41
<jammcq>
budgee: we didn't put LTSP into gentoo, we we weren't really concerned about it being removed. For 4.2, we'd rather have people install it the "official" way with ltspadmin
10:42
<budgee>
jammcq: ok, i get you there.

pscheie: What does your udev rules file look like

i m askin u because i think u mantain that code, im doin a vmware xubuntu ltsp test instal and i was wondering if that code is feisty specific or if it might worh with edgy as well ogra
10:54
<g333k_work>
sbalneav, have yo ever tried to set up autologin with ltsp 5? I tried to follow this guide but I cant make it works... http://www.k12ltsp.org/mediawiki/index.php/A_more_complete_How-To_for_setting_up_autologin_of_clients_using_Gnome_&_GDM
10:54
<pscheie>
it's the stock 4.2, I haven't modified it. lemme look
10:54
<ogra>
bip, its feisty specific and not ready yet ...
10:54
<bip>
ok
10:55
do u know if that might work buy the time first beta will be released ?
10:55
<pscheie>
sbalneav: what's the pastebot address?
10:55
<ogra>
we already released the second beta fo feisty ... so no
10:55
<bip>
as we have discussed in the past im highly interested in testing fat clients and fat/thin clients integration
10:55
<ogra>
its missing the network authentication parts yet
10:56
<pscheie>
?pastebot
10:56
<bip>
well the last imagae release was stil labeled alpha or maybe i have missed something ogra
10:56
<ogra>
you can work without network auth though
10:57
<bip>
can i work w/out it ?
10:57
<ogra>
just do your user maintenance in the client chroot ...
10:57
<sbalneav>
g333k_work: No, I never use autologin
10:57
<bip>
well i sorta need to integrate that ino a ms AD structure ...
10:57
<ogra>
sudo chroot /opt/ltsp/i386 adduser bleh
10:57
<bip>
so im really lookin foward to see the auth part solved too
10:57
<g333k_work>
Well maybe my question should have been: Does anybody here have set up autologin with ltsp 5?
10:57
<ogra>
will just create local user called bleh in the client environment
10:58
<sbalneav>
g333k_work: If you're going to use GDM + startx, then it should be the same.
10:58
<bip>
ok could act as workaround
10:58
<sbalneav>
It's just a gdm configuration issue.
10:58
<ogra>
apart from that the code i the spec should work right ...
10:58
<g333k_work>
sbalneav, The same what?
10:58
<bip>
ok i ll play a bit with it and let u know what i get out of it ...
10:59
<sbalneav>
It should be the same way to do things. I.e. autologin's handled by gdm.
10:59
<bip>
keep with the good work i hope to see the auth and fat client thing working soon ogra :)
11:00
<ogra>
me too ... feature freeze is feb 8th ... i need to have *something* until then ... and life is keeping me away from coding atm ... cross your fingers

On LTSP5 Ubuntu I'd like to put LDM on screen_02 and startx on screen_01 would point to the XDMCP server on the LTSP box that I've enabled with GDM.

HA! I got LTSP5 to do startx instead of ldm by renaming the ldm script then creating a symlink of ldm to startx.

hello. I am using ltsp-4.2. I'm trying to use international keyboards, but setxkbmap doesn't work, and nor does kxkb (from kde). If I follow the manual and do setxkbmap -print us | xkbcomp - $DISPLAY, it works OK. What should I do to make kxkb work?

Anyone here who knows a bit about ALSA
12:48
I have tried to GET ESD working and it works on all of my thin stations
12:49
<joebaker>
troels: I've just used it in an LTSP environment. I set alsa to use ESD and set up an environment variable of ESPEAKER=hostname:xxxx
12:49
I think alsa speaks to artsd --- I could be wrong.

macjunki1: You need to update your dhcpd.conf file.
13:01
Look in the ltsp 4.2 installation guide, it's got a sample dhcpd.conf in there.
13:01
<troels>
cervajs i havent solved the problem yet, but when i do i will send you a mail

thx :)

<troels>
macjunki1 i think its because your dhcp server points to the old kernel, remember to change the version name of the kernel
13:05
<macjunki1>
yeah it is :)
13:05
just fixed it and testing
13:08
like i said its been about 2-3 yrs since i last looked at this beacuse its worked so well and its used for a beginining linux class so i can't realy touch it during the term
13:09
now i'm getting an error that the bzImage-2.6.9-ltsp-3 isn't a valid image
