<mwalters>
Hi, recently inherited an ltsp environment. I have a couple client boxes (diskless, pxe booting thingies) that launch the desktop as multihead, even though there's one monitor attached. Can't find anything in the client bios, any direction where to look first?
17:31
<alkisg>
mwalters: what do you mean "multihead"? Just output to 2 monitors?
17:31
mwalters: what's the output of `xrandr` ?
17:34* alkisg guesses you'd need something like this in lts.conf: XRANDR_COMMAND_0="xrandr --output edp-0 --off"
17:34alkisg has left IRC (alkisg!~alkisg@ubuntu/member/alkisg, Quit: Leaving.)
17:41alkisg has joined IRC (alkisg!bc04dad8@ubuntu/member/alkisg)
17:44
<mwalters>
alkisg: yes, I mean the login splash appears to be multimonitor (prompts are "centered" between two), despite only 1 monitor being attached. running xrandr from a virtual terminal outputs "cannot locate display", which is probably expected from a vt
17:44
<alkisg>
mwalters: you'd need to login to run xrandr
17:44
(or, use epoptes if you have it installed)
17:45
Btw, I've fixed the "login centered" about a year ago, which distro/version is this?
17:45
<mwalters>
we have both multimonitor and single monitor clients that all seem to run correctly. It's just a few of these spare boxes I have sitting around that do this
17:45
ubuntu 14.04
17:45
<alkisg>
OK, you don't have the fix then
17:45
Login, run xrandr, pastebin the output, and I'll tell you the correct XRANDR command for lts.conf
17:46
<mwalters>
not all of our single monitor clients are doing this. The deployed single monitor clients don't have this issue, only these few boxes I have laying around
18:06
<alkisg>
mwalters: you'd need to paste the output of xrandr for me to help
18:40
<mwalters>
alkisg: understood, getting pulled off on other things
18:43
alkisg: https://pastebin.com/3Cehz17Y
18:44
I'm guessing the LVDS-0 display is causing the issue. Only the VGA port has anything connected.
18:45
<alkisg>
mwalters: correct, so put this in lts.conf: XRANDR_COMMAND_0="xrandr --output LVDS-0 --off"
18:47
And, file a bug report in your graphics driver, although it's been probably solved years ago
18:47
<mwalters>
alkisg: where is that "normally" found? I looked around for it a bit when researching earlier (I appologize for my ignorance, this is my first exposure to ltsp)
18:49
<alkisg>
What, lts.conf? Usually in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/lts.conf
18:49
<mwalters>
yes, thank you!
18:49
Appreciate your help
19:01

19:30
<hyperion488>
Hi, I'm using LTSP with Ubuntu Mate 18.04. How should I shutdown a thin client properly?
19:39
<Helenah>
Oh, alkisg, yo, hi, hows it goin'?
19:39
hyperion488: Yo yo, long time, no chat, hows ya doin' also?
19:39
hyperion488: With mate, mate-session-save
19:40
You can do mate-session-save --shutdown-dialog and --logout-dialog
19:40
and you can do --logout for just logout, no dialog, and --force-logout for if your system has got stuck in some way where you have access to that command still.
19:43
<hyperion488>
So, there insn't a way to use the default shutdown button? Should I disable it?
19:43
<Helenah>
Those buttons are mapped to that command, however I thought I'd give you the command for reference.
19:44
Both will be safe.
19:45
hyperion488: Some nice advice, whatever DE you adopt to use, whether it's mate now, and something else in the future. Always look into the session-manager of that DE. For mate, that would be mate-session. There are usually commands with the DE which send calls to the session manager for things such as safe logouts.
19:47
<hyperion488>
But if i click on the shutdown button the session restart automatically
19:47
<Helenah>
Rather than just logging out of the session via Xorg, which can be brutal with DE environments, and even more so for LTSP clients, these commands allow the session-manager to gracefully end the session more properly.
19:47
Really? It might have been mapped to restart. In dconf, where the DE stores session variables, you can change what commands these buttons execute.
19:48
<vagrantc>
on a thin client, almost none of the desktop environments support shutting down LTSP
19:48
<Helenah>
Take a look into dbus, dconf, and dconf-editor.
19:48
vagrantc: Yo, thansk for the reminder.
19:48
<vagrantc>
should generally work fine on a fat client, though
19:48
<Helenah>
I'm used to my fat client LAN
19:48
<hyperion488>
I'm using thin client
19:49
<Helenah>
Yeah, that would explain the restart.
19:49
<vagrantc>
yes, i'd recommend chrootless fat clients unless you've got a really recent install
19:49
er, unless you have a really old install ...
19:49
and even then, i'd generally recommend exploring upgrading
19:49
<Helenah>
vagrantc: I had to learn about dconf, etc to get my LTSP setup to work nicely with i3wm by running it in a mate-session.
19:50
<vagrantc>
wow. :)
19:50
lxde and lxqt are the only desktops i know of that specifically implement shutdown/restart buttons that work with LTSP thin clients
19:50
<Helenah>
I basically purged marco, and used i3wm as the WM for the session manager.
19:51
vagrantc: mate will too, and unity.
19:51
<vagrantc>
at one point, i think someone wrote some .desktop files to support it for gnome or something
19:51
Helenah: thin client?
19:51
<Helenah>
It's just a matter of finding out what commands send what calls to the DE's session manager.
19:51
vagrantc: both thin and fat
19:51
But, I don't use thin clients, I know the setup works cause I did use them.
19:52
<vagrantc>
for thin clients, the desktop environment needs to set a value with xprop
19:52
<Helenah>
Yeah, I love xprop
19:52
<vagrantc>
i'd be shocked if mate added that
19:52
and unity
19:52
<Helenah>
I'm using it with i3wm
19:52
<vagrantc>
on a thin client?
19:52
<Helenah>
Both
19:52
<alkisg>
hyperion488: epoptes has a script called "endsession" which supports thin clients in all DEs
19:53* vagrantc is skeptical
19:53
<alkisg>
hyperion488: e.g. endsession --shutdown will do what you want
19:53
!epoptes
19:53
<ltsp>
epoptes: Epoptes is a computer lab administration and monitoring tool. It works on Ubuntu and Debian based labs with LTSP or non-LTSP servers, thin and fat clients, standalone workstations, NX clients etc. More info: http://www.epoptes.org
19:53
<Helenah>
Like I said, I have both environments working, however I don't typically use thin clients. I can't guarantee the stability of my thin client environment, however the fat client one is flawless.
19:53
And when I last checked, the thin client one was too
19:54
Does anyone here like to keep an eye on their overlay size?
19:56
<hyperion488>
I'll create a .desktop file with endsession --shutdown
19:56
Thank you guys
19:56
<Helenah>
There is endsession?
19:56* Helenah takes a look
19:56
<Helenah>
hyperion488: Which DE again, mate?
19:58
<hyperion488>
Yes. I think the command is /usr/share/epoptes-client/endsession --shutdown
19:58
<Helenah>
Aaaaah, interesting.
19:59* Helenah installs epoptes
20:11
<Helenah>
What does /usr/share/apoptes-client/share-terminal do?
20:18
<alkisg>
Helenah: it allows you to share a terminal between a user and a tech support guy
20:19
Like teamviewer, but for terminals

20:22
alkisg: Nice, I didn't know epoptes could be used from the command line.
20:22
<alkisg>
It can't
20:22
This is just a utility to share a terminal, unrelated to anything else in epoptes
