<cheche>
I am stil having problems with LTSP. I am able to boot up from the net using a new laptop. But try to boot up with a PII 350mhz/128Mb RAM fails
00:34
it reboot itselfs when the kernel loads. no error just reboot.. try to modify image and add SHELL_02=true but no luck on this one

00:58
<cheche>
looks like 128M was not enough. Adding 64Mb was enought to boot up.
01:03mischko has left IRC (mischko!~schapman@205.247.25.89, Quit: Ex-Chat)

<cheche>
andygraybeal: it was a shame that no error pop up somewhere.. Enable rsyslog but still no-error. This was just a lucky shot.
01:31
<andygraybeal>
:)
01:31
go cheche
01:31
i'm still having no luck with my venture w/ ltsp and ldap at this moment - i've gotten further along but still no go.
01:31
i will keep working. i've been at it since 4am friday morning.. and everyone can laugh, i don't care.

01:32vagrantc has joined IRC (vagrantc!~vagrant@c-71-237-213-89.hsd1.or.comcast.net)
01:32
<andygraybeal>
i did, but someone told me i had it convoluted. he told me how to straighten it out, it just hasn't worked.
01:32
<cheche>
so, what is the problem?
01:33
<andygraybeal>
basically i have no clue as to what i'm doing :) ... um.. and probably need to pay more attention.
01:33
<cheche>
:-)
01:34
<andygraybeal>
i dunno man, i'll get it soon.
01:34
i'm almost there.
01:34
<cheche>
try to start from basic and move up..
01:34
<andygraybeal>
i hvae plenty of coffee
01:34
yes, i overstretched myself.. and failed.. now i'm backing up
01:35
kind of want to start from scratch for the ninth time
01:35
i'll get it man, i am confident.
01:35
it just takes me time, longer than the others.
01:35
<cheche>
well, I am not sure... ok, so you are able to use LTSP without auth from ldap right?
01:36
<andygraybeal>
naw, i failed this time at that.
01:36
i got it previously
01:36
time and time before, but not this time :)
01:36
i know right, i can auth on the ltsp server with ldap, but the client doesn't auth with or without ldap
01:37
so ldap isn't even at play in this.
01:37
right now i'm just trying to back track until i can get auth with straight ltsp
01:37
brb
01:38
<cheche>
is the client able to auth with local username/pasword?
01:39
<andygraybeal>
client isn't authing with anything
01:39
it boots up to ldm thouhg, so that is plusses
01:40
i want to remake the image for the hey of it man.
01:40
unless you got a better idea..
01:41
i guess i can try to update kernels and ssh keys
01:41
<cheche>
still learinig how all those pieces fit together...
01:42
<bixter>
anyone have plymouth working with nvidia drivers?
01:43
<andygraybeal>
i figure tailing /var/log/auth.log would help me out, but it isn't... you got an idea of what i could watch to fin d the problem?
01:44
<cheche>
andygraybeal: if as default it uses the localhost. I guess that you changed something on the /etc/nsswitch.conf
01:45
andygraybeal: still. not sure how LTSP fit together...
01:45
<andygraybeal>
maybe so, lemme look - i've never heard of that file, but i notice it might get changed with zentyal
01:45
<cheche>
mine is "passwd: compat"
01:46
<andygraybeal>
mine: 'passwd: compat ldap'
01:47
i auth just fine on the server itself, but the client, i don't auth
01:47
to repeat myself.. sorry if you got that befor.
01:47vagrantc has left IRC (vagrantc!~vagrant@c-71-237-213-89.hsd1.or.comcast.net, Ping timeout: 240 seconds)
01:48
<cheche>
comment that line and put "passwd: compat" . see if you can auth locally
01:48
<andygraybeal>
i'm updating image for the heck of it -- i will comment that line and substitute what you said, in a sec.
01:49
<cheche>
andygraybeal: that line is on the server. so no need to update image for that
01:50
<andygraybeal>
oh i gotcha, i already started the update, befor i read your post
01:51
it took man, i got in w/ local auth -- i hvaen't done what you said -- i did ltsp-update-kernel and ltsp-update-image
01:51
lemme try ldap auth now.
01:52
i'm in w/ ldap auth!
01:52
hooray!! omg yes !
01:52
<cheche>
i have not done anything...
01:52
<andygraybeal>
it's not kludged this time!
01:52
cheche: :))
01:52
i dunno man.. i just don't get it - but i keep trying.
01:53
thanksfor the help anyway.
01:53
i'm glad that your getting along well.
01:53
the more people that use this the awesomer it becomes :) thanks very much to the devs.

shouldn't be that hard from here on out now that i got auth
02:10

09:37
<khildin>
would love to read your documentation.... are you going to post it in TRAC?
09:38
<andygraybeal>
possibly, i need to do this operation like 2 or 3 more times to make sure
09:38
<khildin>
as community documentation?
09:38
<andygraybeal>
i don't know man :) howerver is best.
09:38
so i'd ask before i did anything
09:38
i've never documented anything for ltsp
09:39
<khildin>
just write down what you do, how you do it and what the result is... :)

09:40
<khildin>
syntax isn't that difficult.... I hate it... but not difficult... :P
09:40
<andygraybeal>
what is the ltsp trac?
09:41
<khildin>
ltsp documentation is rather fragmented... I was thinking of zentyal trac... ;)
09:41
<andygraybeal>
aaah
09:41
zentyal trac
09:42
yes, i will do both
09:42
ltsp and zentyals
09:43
<khildin>
ltsp documentation for ubuntu is on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP
09:43
<andygraybeal>
yea yea :)
09:43
i read that over and over and over. i wondered what you meant when you said trac :)
09:43
i was like huh?
09:43
<khildin>
^^
09:44
<andygraybeal>
i was like.. oh.. developer stuff.... of course i don't know.
09:44
but yes, i'm used to reading zentyal's trac
09:45
now for coffee!! i have a wiring project this morning.
09:46
have to be ready by 6am :) the restaurant that i co-own is closed today.
09:46
it's the only time i can work on the infrastructure when we close. it's rare enough.
09:46
<khildin>
hehe
09:46
<andygraybeal>
wiring that is
09:47
<khildin>
installing a lot of AP's? or Wall outlets?
09:47
<andygraybeal>
where going to replace our 2.4ghz phone with a 1.9ghz phone - but we want it in a different place than it is. we also want to replace the wire to another phone that was spliced by a contractor some years ago.
09:48
<khildin>
plain pstn or voip?
09:48
<andygraybeal>
proprietary hybrid. before voip... it's digital.. it's very stupid.. we are going to move to voip soon enough - but not there yet.
09:49
some phones run off of ATA some phones run direct to digital box
09:49
<khildin>
I use a simple linsys ATA
09:49
linksys*
09:50
<andygraybeal>
aah i have one of those
09:50
err.. i think i know what your talking about atleast.
09:50
you use that for home? or for business?
09:50
<khildin>
have been yelling on those dialplans long enough... lol
09:50
home
09:51
<andygraybeal>
yea, it's great for home.
09:51
give me a couple of weeks to practice this installation before i feel comfortable documenting it
09:52
i'm just happy i got it to work
09:52
<khildin>
fair enough... :P
09:52
<andygraybeal>
have you tried otrs-itsm ?
09:52
i got that integrated into zentyal ldap the other day! i was like.. woohoo!
09:53
so.. as far as it goes.. i'm getting the hang of this ldap compared to where i was a year ago. i'm gonna keep going....we have so many apps we use a tthe restaurant that i need to integrate.
09:53
i'm so excited.
09:55
<khildin>
ohh... nice!!...
09:56
I just hear you have a LOT of documenting to do!!

18:15
<Hyperbyte>
JerryNJ, you can use anything with LTSP really
18:15
LTSP uses screen scripts to determine what to launch in the X screens
18:16
Take a look at the (if memory serves) /opt/ltsp/<arch>/usr/share/ltsp/screen.d/ directory
18:16
You can create new scripts there if you want, for basically anything, and then configure it on a thin client using the SCREEN_* variables in lts.conf
18:18
As for upgrading rdesktop, "apt-get upgrade rdesktop" should probably do it, if there's an upgrade available. But I think the first thing you should be telling us is, -why- do ou want to upgrade rdesktop, and -why- do you want to use tsclient (whatever that is)?
18:19
Just read a bit back in the log, if you're having a problem with rdesktop not giving you a proper login prompt, see if it does it also when you use Windows' own remote desktop tool. If it does, your problem lies with Windows 2000, not Linux or rdesktop.
18:19
<JerryNJ>
the reason is that when I connect to a W2008 R2 TS , I have a black mouse pointer
18:20
this is a problem for the end users
18:20
<Hyperbyte>

18:27
<Hyperbyte>
Are you using the rdesktop screen script, or rdesktop from Gnome? And are you using thin clients or fat?
18:27
<_UsUrPeR_>
^^^ these are important questions
18:28
JerryNJ: if you are using screen_07 = rdesktop, I believe you will need to install the rdesktop fix on your client image.
18:28
<Hyperbyte>
Yes, and if you are using fat clients, you will need to install the binary in the client image as well, in /opt/ltsp/<arch>/
18:28
And then afterwards ltsp-update-image
18:29
And then reboot clients
18:29
*client
18:29
Server you don't have to reboot at all for this...
18:30
If you're using rdesktop from Gnome, and thin clients, you don't have to do anything after applying the fix.

18:48
yes it reads : SCREEN_07="rdesktop...........

18:50
<_UsUrPeR_>
JerryNJ: the reason this is not working for you is: rdesktop is running on your client
18:50
not your server
18:50
in order to make changes to the client image, you will need to make the same changes on your server, but you will need to do them in /opt/ltsp/i386
18:50
you may do this by running chroot /opt/ltsp/i386
18:51
and proceeding from that point, inside the chroot'd file system

there appears to be a working binary for i386 at ppa:otto-kesselgulasch/testbildtest

<Hyperbyte>
JerryNJ, you were given it.
21:28
If you want to work with Linux, you have to learn to analyse what your problem is, and work to fix it... without getting frustrated and yelling in all caps to strangers on the internet.
21:29
The fix you were given by _UsUrPeR_, was to copy an rdesktop binary to the client chroot. Where exactly are you getting stuck?

<JerryNJ>
well
21:29
it looks like i was able to get the client updated
21:29
(i think)
21:30
but the issue still remains
21:30
unless I did something wrong
21:30
any idea how i can check if the client is the right one?
21:30
<bixter>
anyone know how i can assign better hostnames (not mac address) to thin clients? or is it best to write a script?
21:30
<JerryNJ>
i.e. the one that is fixed?
21:31
<bixter>
yeah
21:32
<Hyperbyte>
JerryNJ, get a local root shell on the client, compare file sizes of the rdesktop executable on there, with the file size of the executable it should be.
21:32
<bixter>
not sure if ltsp has something built in
21:32
<Hyperbyte>
!screen_02 | echo JerryNJ
21:32
<ltsp>
JerryNJ screen_02: To get a root shell on an Ubuntu thin client: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ClientTroubleshooting#Using_a_shell_SCREEN
21:32
<Hyperbyte>
bixter, what will determine the client hostname then, if not mac address?
21:33
<bixter>
a text file. didnt know if there was a config file one could write like mac = hostname
21:33
i can write onr
21:33
err on e
21:33
<Hyperbyte>
Then all your clients will have the same hostname?

21:33
<bixter>
nah
21:34
they can look at a text file to determine their hostname
21:34
from their macs
21:34
<Hyperbyte>
Rightr
21:34
Why do you want this?
21:34
<bixter>
u know what. ill just put it in my hosts file.
21:34
<JerryNJ>
so if i get to the root shell...
21:35
<bixter>
do some aliases
21:35
<JerryNJ>
then i can tell what version i have?
21:35
<Hyperbyte>
bixter, so basically, you don't want to change the client hostnames
21:35
You want to change the DNS entries?
21:35
<bixter>
both
21:35
<Hyperbyte>
You could have your DHCPD hand out static IP addresses based on MAC, and map DNS entries to those...
21:35
<bixter>
yeah
21:36
<Hyperbyte>
As for client hostname, I don't think it's configurable.
21:36
<bixter>
yeah, thats not as important. dns will do it for me
21:36
<Hyperbyte>
Although it would be fairly easy to hack the LTSP source code to read hostname from lts.conf
21:37
JerryNJ, please read my previous comment. If you get stuck on what to do, ask... but don't make me repeat the same thing, please.

so i wouldnt know how to compare
21:40
im sorry - im not a nix proficient person
21:42
<bixter>
one more question. i have a 2GB fat client for myth that uses about 1GB of that, any reason for a network swap?>
21:43
<Hyperbyte>
JerryNJ, don't be sorry for asking questions.
21:43
Type 'whereis rdesktop'
21:49
<JerryNJ>
i typed that and it looks like it showed me a path

23:15
So bixter you can set HOSTNAME=xxx In lts.conf, under [mac:address] sections for each of your clients
23:15
But you can also set client hostnames from dhcp
