Looking for opinions: I have an LTSP server still running 16.04.6. I waited to upgrade this one until all the dust settled. Any chance I can just "do-release-upgrade" and half-expect LTSP to keep working on the other side of the upgrade?
15:32
<alkisg>
sutula: sure, as long as you add the greek schools ppa after the upgrade
15:32
<sutula>
alkisg: I think it may be there already, but does that go away in an upgrade?
15:33
<alkisg>
Yes, do-release-upgrade removes all outside sources, and you need to re-add them
15:33
<sutula>
OK, thanks so much! That'd have been a mystery to me.

<eddytv>
Question: are there known DNS issues with using Ubuntu 18.04.2 as an LTSP client? Even though "/run/net-eth0.conf" on the clients has a valid "DNS_SERVER" entry, /etc/resolv.conf is pointing to /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf which contains "nameserver 127.0.0.53"
18:52
<mwalters>
I think it's more about how systemd-resolved works
18:53
let me see if I can remember how I fixed all this zaniness...
18:53
`systemd-resolve --status` will show you what dns server you're *really* using
18:54
<eddytv>
Thanks. I found quite a few articles on "fixing" this issue on a "real" 18.04 install, but nothing seems to apply to when it's an LTSP client.
18:55
<mwalters>
Are you using a chrootless install?
18:55
<eddytv>
Right... and under "Link 2 (eth0)", there is no "DNS Servers" line
18:56
No, 18.04 is in a chroot
18:56
<mwalters>
I ended up adding `DNS_SERVER="server1 server2 etc` after getting super fed up with how ubuntu handles dns now ;)
18:57
<alkisg>
Do you have the greek schools ppa in the chroot?
18:57
<eddytv>
Yes indeed
18:57
<mwalters>
eer... `DNS_SERVER="server1 server2 server3"` to lts.conf
18:57
but in my case, I wanted the dns servers to NOT be the ltsp server
18:58
I'm sure alkisg can show you the *right* way... I'm sure my config is super goofed up thanks to my tinkering ;)
18:59
But works after sufficient amounts of bubblegum and tape
18:59
<eddytv>
Oops, I have to run to a meeting at the top of the hour. I'll be back in about 30 minutes. I'd appreciate any pointers. I spent a bunch of time this weekend trying to track down the issue with no luck.
18:59* alkisg will be back in 30 too :D
19:10
<section1>
i solve this disabling systemd resolver and remove the /etc/resolv.conf link and making a real resolv.conf file with the correct dns of my lan
19:10
<alkisg>
!ipappend
19:10
<ltsp>
ipappend: o temporarily solve DHCP problems in the initramfs, try putting IPAPPEND 3 after the APPEND line in /var/lib/tftpboot/ltsp/i386/pxelinux.cfg/default. More info: http://www.syslinux.org/wiki/index.php/SYSLINUX#IPAPPEND_flag_val_.5BPXELINUX_only.5D
19:11
<alkisg>
eddytv: so, ltsp now defaults to "ipappend 3", which means that it doesn't really use the server dhcp offer, but it's reusing the ip from the pxe stack
19:11
This in turn means that DNS is ignored, and you need to put DNS_SERVER in lts.conf,
19:12
unless you revert to using IPAPPEND 2, in which case the usual second dhcp request will fetch the DNS server
19:12
although, hmm, this doesn't explain why you see it in /run/net-eth0.conf
19:16
eddytv: so anyway, when you're ready, pastebin the output of the following commands on the client:
19:16
cat /proc/cmdline
19:16
getltscfg -a | grep DNS
19:16
ls -l /etc/resolv.conf
19:16
cat /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf
19:17
These should be enough to locate the issue...
19:32
<eddytv>
I definitely had to add "IPAPPEND 2" to "update-kernels.conf". That was another problem I ran in to, but I ended up finding a discussion about it in the LTSP mailing list archives.
19:37
I'll have the output of those commands in a few; have to deal with something else that just came up first. Thanks!

20:38
<alkisg>
eddytv: uninstall resolvconf, and let ubuntu use the default systemd-resolved service
20:38
This is what the symlink should say: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 39 Ιουλ 19 11:10 /etc/resolv.conf -> ../run/systemd/resolve/stub-resolv.conf
20:39
If you didn't manually install resolvconf and broke this, it would be interesting to find out what pulled resolvconf; it's not installed by default
20:40
Anyways, it's late here, /me waves...
20:40
<eddytv>
Hmm. This was an update from an earlier ubuntu release
20:41
In any case, thanks for the help! I will give it a try.
20:43Faith has left IRC (Faith!~Paty_@unaffiliated/faith, Quit: Leaving)
20:56
<eddytv>
So, after removing resolvconf, the client now has an actual /etc/resolv.conf file (that is, it's not a symlink) which contains "# Generated by LTSP" and has the nameserver that (appears to be) from /run/net-eth0.conf... and DNS works. /shrug? It's progress...
