Hi, I've set up a fully working ltsp-system. Only when I put a cd or usb in the server, I get a pop-up on the client that he can't mount the cd or usb, that I'm not authorized. Has anyone an idea how to fix this ?

Is the user in the cdrom group?
06:19
<andygraybeal>
i know i dont' know that much but... does the fuse group have to do with this sort of thing also? no one could access the usb jump drives until they were in the fuse group on my system
06:24
<Lynn>
I didn't try to add the user in the cdrom group
06:24
<alkisg>
They are added by default, if you use the gnome tool for user creation (users-admin)

I work with an ldapserver
06:26

ok
06:31
grep Groups /etc/gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf

does anyone know on how to edit the user name requirments in Edubuntu?
08:42
we are wanting to use 4 characters instead of 5
08:42
<andygraybeal>
i know you can do a force-badname at the command prompt.. i dont' know if that is helpful
08:43
it might not be exactly --force-badname .. but it's something like that
08:43
<majormatt>
no a way to modify the config files to allow shorter usernames

wait for somenoe else, i don't know that much about the system

i know it is of no matter, why 4 characters for a username?
08:45

well we have LTSP on CentOS

Can anyone here assist me in setting up my dual network cards to work properly with LTSP. When I ran a test environment on VMWare it worked fine. But now that I have a real server, it is not liking the second card.
13:12
<andygraybeal>
hi dlbass!!
13:12
<dlbass>
greetings
13:13
<andygraybeal>
pastie your /etc/network/interfaces file
13:13
<dlbass>
ok one sec
13:13
auto lo
13:14
iface lo inet loopback
13:14
auto eth0
13:14
iface eth0 inet static
13:14
address 192.168.0.254
13:14
netmask 255.255.255.0
13:14
that's it. sorry for not being able to paste it,
13:15
eth1 is the card I want to connect to the internet with
13:15
<alkisg>
What is your actual problem? Error messages etc?
13:15alexqwesa (~alex@alexo-veto.broker.freenet6.net) joined #ltsp.
13:16
<dlbass>
alkisg, it just does not connect, IP stays 0.0.0.0
13:16
So I cannot go online.
13:16
<alkisg>
What does not connect? The server to the internet? Or the client to the server?
13:16
OK. Try this:
13:16
sudo dhclient eth1
13:16
<dlbass>
Server to internet, sorry
13:17
ok it is now doing that
13:17
repeating the same line over and over
13:17
<alkisg>
Maybe you put the cables in the wrong NICs
13:17
Let it finish
13:17
If it fails, then try with: sudo dhclient eth0
13:18
<dlbass>
DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval XX
13:18
<alkisg>
Right, it's asking for an IP and noone gives it one
13:18
<dlbass>
I suppose it just failed, no DHCP offers recieved
13:18
aah
13:18
<alkisg>
OK, try with: sudo dhclient eth0
13:19
<dlbass>
that one worked
13:19
<alkisg>
Then change your /etc/network/interfaces so that it says "eth1" instead of "eth0"
13:19
And reboot your server
13:19
I.e. eth0 == connected to the internet, eth1 == faces ltsp clients
13:20
Or switch the cables, whatever you prefer
13:20
<dlbass>
Oh ok. I will do that
13:20mistik1 (mistik1@unaffiliated/mistik1) joined #ltsp.
13:20
<dlbass>
switching the cables would do nothing, they both run to the same switch, that isnt the problem is it?
13:20
<alkisg>
That doesn't sound right
13:20
If they were on the same switch, then why didn't eth1 get an IP address?
13:20
And eth0 did?
13:21
<dlbass>
That is what is puzzling me, I suppose the card may be bad
13:21
<alkisg>
And also, yes, it's usually a problem to connect both cards to the same switch, unless you want to do "bonding"
13:21
<dlbass>
What is bonding?
13:22
<alkisg>
Advanced networking stuff, to "bond" several NICs into one, with only 1 IP etc
13:24
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/Trunking
13:24
So in other words, don't connect both of them to the same switch
13:24
<dlbass>
Ah. we were planning on putting the server in the server room and letting it host to clients in a different part of the building. So we were going to let it feed out one port into the switch and let it get internet access from another port on the same switch. Is this not a good way to run LTSP?
13:24
<alkisg>
Use only 1 nic in that case
13:25
The primary rule is: you can't have 2 dhcp servers in one subnet
13:25
So the way you plan it, you'll have the ltsp dhcp server and your "internet" dhcp server on the same switch
13:26
<dlbass>
Yes pretty much
13:26
<alkisg>
In that case, turn off one of those dhcp servers and keep only one
13:26
And also keep only one NIC
13:27
<dlbass>
That sounds good. Is there a guide for making LTSP work with a Windows DHCP server?
13:27
<alkisg>
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPWindowsDHCP
13:27
<dlbass>
oh you are fantastic
13:27
<alkisg>
Just pasting wiki links :)
13:28
<dlbass>
Sometimes it takes skill just to find them
13:30
But, before I leave you alone, vagrantc talked me through how to setup my server to work with LDM_AUTOLOGIN. I put together a guide using his methods, and as far as I can tell, there isnt one already out there. Is there someone that I can give this one to so it can get modified and put in the documentation?
13:32
here is a link to it https://docs.google.com/document/pub?id=1SBVIywwUid9ElFa1uOAGI1ILYrrxu_wNWwGIu1QnMNU

<alkisg>
dlbass: the ubuntultsp wiki is a wiki
13:36
You just go there and write what you think would be useful to others
13:36
I wrote a dozen of pages there, other people here wrote other pages etc etc
13:37
So just go ahead and create a page for that
13:37
The LDM_AUTOLOGIN part isn't really important, it's in the lts.conf manpage
13:37
But the ssh keys part with no passwords, I don't think it's documented
13:37
<dlbass>
oh ok, so I just need to sign up and then post it myself? Pretty simple.
13:37
<alkisg>
So mention that in the page title
13:38
<dlbass>
So
13:38
oops, hit wrong key
13:38
what I meant to type was, thanks for your help!

<alkisg>
You're welcome. Do post the wiki link after you're done
13:44
Hmmm security wise, I don't think it's much safer than using LDM_PASSWORD in lts.conf
13:45
<dlbass>
He said the point was that children cannot change their password
13:45
<vagrantc>
alkisg: well, if dlbass had a smart switch, it could configure different ports into logical networks
13:46
<alkisg>
Ah isn't there a policy to prevent that?
13:46
<vagrantc>
vlans, and such
13:46
but that requires a configurable switch
13:47
<dlbass>
ours are configurable
13:47
my boss had mentioned setting up a vlan for it to live in
13:47
that stuff is over my head though'
13:47
<vagrantc>
yes, in that case, it's basically a separate switch, just happens to be housed in the same case
13:47
<alkisg>
OK, but a usb stick on an unmonitored thin client inside that vlan, would be all that's needed to access any user account later on...
13:48
Anyway, it's an interesting method nevertheless
13:49
<vagrantc>
ssh keys can be restricted to a single ip address, whereas i don't think passwords can
13:49
i suppose there are ways to do it
13:49
<dlbass>
Have you ever had your ubuntu tell you that it cannot update because of untrusted packages
13:50
<vagrantc>
but it is a fundamental compromise of ssh to have a shared key.

<alkisg>
You probably put some ppa without inserting its key
13:51
ls -l /etc/apt/sources.list.d
13:51
sudo apt-key list
13:51
...or use the update UI
13:52
<dlbass>
the UI is what i'm using
13:52
<alkisg>
I mean, to see which sources you have, that you don't have the keys for
13:53
System > settings > software sources, or something like that
13:54
<dlbass>
there are three sources all showing "automatic key signing
13:54
<alkisg>
Check the "other software" tab
13:54
<dlbass>
I may just rebuild this machine, it drops to busybox during boot, but type exit and it will boot anyway
13:54
<vagrantc>
if you do an update at the exact wrong moment, sometimes you can end up with an out of sync mirror
13:55
apt-get update usually fixes that
13:55
<dlbass>
ah! they were unchecked under other software!
13:55
<alkisg>
Any source that you're using, must have a key in "Authentication" tab
13:56
If there's no key there, you'll have "untrusted packages"
13:56
<andygraybeal>
vagrantc, i noticed your part of freegeek! very fun. i am going to my local freegeek in july :)
13:56
<alkisg>
But also do try what vagrantc said, i.e. apt-get update
13:56
<andygraybeal>
"local" is two hours away
13:56
<vagrantc>
andygraybeal: where's that?
13:56
<andygraybeal>
columbus
13:56
i'm in athens
13:56
ohio
13:56
<vagrantc>
andygraybeal: visited that freegeek a few years back
13:57
<dlbass>
im getting unable to resolve us.archive.ubuntu.com
13:57
<alkisg>
Do you have internet access currently?
13:58
<dlbass>
it does
13:58
<andygraybeal>
vagrantc, :) my first time will be in july. they are having a lug meeting there. i'm bringing some machines that need cap jobs to donate. maybe they can bother to fixthem up and get rid of them again.. or not. it doesn't matter.
14:02
dlbass, sometimes i can't resolve that also ;(
14:02
i wait a bit and it's back
14:03
vlans are easy on hp switches with 'menu'

14:09
Mine is not as fancy as it should be, but hopefully it will help someone like it did me. Thanks vagrantc!!
14:11

14:36
it was helpful to review my documentation of the process
14:39
<dlbass>
vagrantc, now it is on the wiki!
14:39
<vagrantc>
dlbass: technically, all LDM uses ssh ... the key point is using *ssh keys*
14:39
might want to rename the page
14:39
<dlbass>
ahhhhh nooooooooo!!! I wonder if it can be fixed?
14:41
I don't guess I can rename it
14:41
oh well
14:41
<vagrantc>
and the mkhomedir stuff isn't *necessary*
14:41
it's a separate issue
14:41
<dlbass>

When it gets to the ubuntu logon screen it says invalid card and reboots
15:10
I'm having a problem with when trying to boot a dumb terminal via ltsp in edubuntu. When it gets to the ubuntu logon screen it says invalid card and reboots, this is on a dell gx150
15:12patrickmw (pwright@71-223-149-129.phnx.qwest.net) left #ltsp ("Ex-Chat").
15:25
<vagrantc>
dumb terminal?
15:28
<zarrku_>
sorry, thin client
15:29
we call them dumb terminals
15:30
They all worked fine with ltsp 4.2
15:31
of course, 4.2 is very different to 5+
15:32
I think its something to do with the video
15:39
<vagrantc>
what is it that says invalid card?
16:15
<zarrku_>
the actual thin client on the ubuntu 10.10 boot screen
16:17
When booting a thin client, ubuntu begins to boot, it then says invalid card and reboots
16:19
<staffencasa>
when we ran GX150's, we had similar issues until we setup specific xorg.conf files for them.
16:20
I would bet it's video as well.
16:22
<zarrku_>
can someone help me with that
16:22
I believe it is video as well
16:22
<staffencasa>
do you have agp cards or onboard?
16:22
<zarrku_>
no agp cards, it is on board video
16:23
<staffencasa>
looking...
16:29
zarrku_, I can't find a copy, but I know where I can get one, it will just take until tomorrow to do. I have to leave in 15 minutes and I have to reimage a computer to get it, which would take longer than I have
16:30
<zarrku_>
hey I can wait
16:30
<staffencasa>
k, do you want me to email you a copy?
16:30
<zarrku_>
yes please
16:31
my email is zarrku@hotmail.com
16:32
<staffencasa>
k, I'll try and get this to you sometime tomorrow morning (PDT)
16:32
<zarrku_>
Thanks so much
16:32
<staffencasa>
no prob
16:33
<zarrku_>
I would go 11.04 edubuntu but the user profile editor crashes everytime
