<lifeboy>
Good morning!
08:06
Alkisg, after copying and extracting the tarball correctly, I got the file permissions & ownership to be the same as on the other server where things work. However, even after deleting /opt/ltsp/i386/etc/ssh/ssh_known_hosts and running ltsp-update-sshkeys and then ltsp-update-image, I still get an authentication failure.
08:07staffencasa has left IRC (staffencasa!~staffenca@8-220.ptpg.oregonstate.edu, Ping timeout: 252 seconds)
08:09
<lifeboy>
If I ssh into the booting thin client and ssh to the server from there (ssh user@192.168.1.100), I get authenticated without any problem, when in the ldm when the user tries to log in, the server's /var/log/auth.log reports "authentication failure" due to "failed password".
08:09
<alkisg>
lifeboy: try ssh user@server
08:09
Don't replace server.
08:09
Don't use ip.
08:10
Ah, if you see failed password then it's a failed password
08:10
Try resetting it to 1234
08:11
<lifeboy>
I have set a simple password and ssh user@server also lets the logon happen correctly
08:12mattcen has left IRC (mattcen!~mattcen@c110-22-201-130.sunsh4.vic.optusnet.com.au, Ping timeout: 246 seconds)

<lifeboy>
I have even asked the user to type her password into the username field just to visually verify that the correct password is actually typed, and it is correct.
08:13
Let me change the password again...
08:20
Ah, figured it out. UK keyboard settings instead of US. " instead of @ in the password! I did ask the user twice to type the password into the username field to verify that the correct characters are displayed, and she confirmed it twice! No, when I let her do one letter as a time she saw the difference :-)

What else am I missing to allow me to access a thin client via ssh (ie get openssh-server running and be accessible)?
09:38
In /etc/ltsp/ltsp-update-image.excludes, I have commented out the ssh keys, I have openssh-server installed and configured in the chroot
09:38
<alkisg>
/etc/ltsp/ltsp-update-image.excludes, and KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES
09:40
<lifeboy>
Ah, in lts.conf, right?
09:41
<alkisg>
Yup
09:42
<lifeboy>
Hmm... at site A I don't have KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES in lts.conf, but can access tc's via ssh?
09:43
I don't remember exactly, but it had something to do with the ssh keys I think
09:44

Alkisg, something else that may help with troubleshooting: If I configure remote logging by setting SYSLOG_HOST, can I push the full Xorg.7.log to the server? Or will it just log to syslog once the client connects to the remote logger?
10:06
I still can't connect to the thin-client using ssh, although I have KEEP_SYSTEM_SERVICES="ssh" in lts.conf. I get ssh: connect to host 172.16.0.20 port 22: Connection refused

hi im using ubuntu 12.04 with ltsp and am trying to use pam_mkhomedir.so to populate a new home folder with /etc/skel. i added the following to '/etc/pam.d/common-session' 'session required pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0022' but when i login with lightdm the folder will be created but no files will be copied from /etc/skel when i login via ssh or tty it works fine.
12:20
do i have to change some other file so lightdm will execute mkhomedir? as i see it /etc/pam.d/lightdm is importing common-session so it should work

Alkisg: Just some feedback: The matter of the chroot image that works on one site and but not on another: It transpired that both hardware devices I was using for test went faulty at the same time. the Vesa xorg driver selects a vertical resolution (1024 pixels) that the 900 pixel LCD does not support and then it flickers. Since it doesn't detect the capabilities, it refuses to set the 1440 x 900 resolution.

alkisg: Yes, I'm aware of X_HORZSYNC/X_VERTREFRESH, etc, but since there are so many of these clients that have failed (due to the client not wanting to invest in a decent UPS for everything), I think replacing them with never clients (like the Gigabyte Brix or Intel NUC) is probably the best way to go. Then we don't battle with RDC display drivers or 'cmov' troubles anymore.

I've managed to set up a working Ubuntu 8.04 LTSP server(the reason for using such old release are graphics/driver issues). Now I'd like to move the chroot/image to my 12.04 server, can I and how do I do that? Which files do I have to move?
22:26* vagrantc cries
22:26
<ncom0pl>
vagrantc: What happened?
22:28
<vagrantc>
8.04 is just too obsolete.
22:29
it'll be hard to support... the NBD support is entirely different now
22:30
<ncom0pl>
I know, I'd really like to use the current release, but it just doesn't seem to want to cooperate with my not-so-young thin client...
22:30
<vagrantc>
the NBD support is essentially incompatible with any recent version
22:30
ncom0pl: 10.04 doesn't work either? at least that's theoretically supported for another year

I tried and it crashed at ldm login, I gave up cause 8.04 was fine.
22:31
So the main problem here would be setting it up to worrk with current NBD?
22:32
<vagrantc>
that's one of the many problems..
22:33
<ncom0pl>
Ok, so let's say I resolved the ldm login crash issue on 10.04.
22:34
Would it then be possible to move the 10.04 chroot/image to my 12.04 server?
22:35
Or maybe I could even build a 10.04 chroot on the 12.04 server, as you say it's still supported.
22:35
<vagrantc>
i think that's incompatible too, honestly...
22:35
i think 12.04 changed to name based NBD exports
22:36
whereas previously it was port-based NBD exports
22:36
<ncom0pl>
Yeah, I've read about it somewhere.
22:36
:/
22:36
<vagrantc>
i *think* an NBD server will only serve one or the other
22:37
so, you've just got some old clients that don't work with 12.04 ?
22:37
because of video card, or other issues?
22:37
<ncom0pl>
Yeah, they just hang when using graphics.
22:38
Most probably video card.
22:38
<vagrantc>
no errors or anything?
22:39
<ncom0pl>
I've had some but I think I've resolved most of them with the help of alkisg.
22:39
He then adised me to try some older distros, and debian.
22:39
So maybe debian is the way to go.
22:41
<vagrantc>
debian tends to support older hardware a little better
22:44
<ncom0pl>
I'll try it with squeeze then.
22:45
<vagrantc>
wheezy doesn't work?
22:45
squeeze is end-of-life in a few months
22:46
<ncom0pl>
alkisg adviced to rather try squeeze with this old clients.
22:46* vagrantc would recommend trying the most recent thing that works
22:46
<vagrantc>
well, most recent stable release
22:47
<ncom0pl>
Yeah I'd like to use the most recent release too, but then again those thin clients have only 128MB of RAM, and older releases seem to run smoother.
22:49
<highvoltage>
won't make that much of a difference. it's the web browser's with large pages stored in local X that kills thin client memory
22:49
the difference between squeeze and wheezy will be neglible
22:51
<ncom0pl>
Well with ubuntu 12.04 after login there was about 2MB of RAM left, and then it quickly began swapping...
22:51
On 8.04 or it seemed much smoother.
22:51
Not so much swapping.
22:53
I think I'll try with squeeze first.
22:53
If I get it to work and have some spare time I'll try wheezy.
22:54
<vagrantc>
at least use squeeze-backports, then
22:54
<ncom0pl>
Sure.
