<TFDL>
Hello, I will just ask you to give me a pointer of what next to do or troubleshoot
17:27
I followed this instruction: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ProxyDHCP
17:28
because our library must use existing DHCP server of the university of Calgary
17:30
I had the LTSP server running confirm from here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/Troubleshooting/TFTP
17:31
and Dnsmasq server running confirm from here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ProxyDHCP
17:33
Here is the issue: When i PXE boot the PXE client will not find the server Ubuntu 12.04 to download the OS files from. Can you tell me how to troubleshoot or what else to do to find out the issue, please?

I also want to include that UbuntuLTSP and ProxyDHCP are on the same Ubuntu server 12.04

17:45
<vagrantc>
TFDL: is the university providing network boot services that interfere with LTSP ?
17:46
TFDL: if you turn off dnsmasq, do you get a network boot of some form?
17:47
<TFDL>
hi Vagrantc
17:48Parker955_Away is now known as Parker955
17:49
<TFDL>
yes the university provides network boot services, i know this because i use openthinclient and it PXE boot successfully and i got a client on my thinclient machine as expected.
17:49
yes even turning the entire server off - power off ubuntu i still get a network boot.
17:51
<vagrantc>
i don't think proxydhcp should be configured on a network that already provides network boot
17:51
that's going to cause problems
17:52
<TFDL>
Vagrantc, from this page: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/ProxyDHCP
17:52
<vagrantc>
at best, it will take over the network boot services, at worst it will break them both.
17:52
<TFDL>
i read: A proxy DHCP server is defined by the PXE specification as a server which sends auxiliary boot information to clients, like the boot filename, tftp server or rootpath, but leaves the task of IP leasing to the normal DHCP server. This functionality perfectly matches certain LTSP configurations where an external, unmodifiable DHCP server is present (e.g. a router).
17:52
<vagrantc>
TFDL: yes, but not where you have existing network boot services
17:53
<TFDL>
ah
17:53
<vagrantc>
TFDL: if i were a sysadmin on that network, i would be very, very angry if someone set that up.
17:53
<TFDL>
ok, thanks so much Vagrantc
17:53
i know what to do next now
17:54
remove proxy DHCP server
17:54
boot PXE clients normally
17:55
thanks for your time.
17:55
<vagrantc>
TFDL: i would reccomend setting up a separate network in your case
17:55
TFDL: or talking to the sysadmmins and seeing if they'd be willing to set up a boot menu entry for your needs.
17:55
<TFDL>
if you have other suggestions please also let me know, LTSP will help our library alot TFDL at UofC.
17:57
talking to sysadmins is almost impossible because the University IT will not accomodate for our smalll devision library.
17:57
setting up a separate network is possible because we build our own thing.
17:57
<vagrantc>
put a second network card in your server and set up your own LTSP network then.
17:58
it's a more traditional setup for LTSP :)
17:59
<TFDL>
can you clarify that setting up a separate network is setting up an dhcp server for our usage and from there we can set up a boot menu entry for our needs as the second suggestion?
17:59
<vagrantc>
a second network card in the server that's not connected to the "main" network, and you can do whatever you want with your own isolated network.
18:00
<TFDL>
yes, putting a second netowrk card is tradition all i read that here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/LTSPQuickInstall#Comments_and_hints
18:00
<vagrantc>
TFDL: you would need DHCP, TFTP on your own network, yes. be sure not to giveout DHCP leases on the "main" network, though!
18:02
<TFDL>
Vagrantc, if not connected to the main network how can i get internet access? I do not need internet access right?
18:03
<vagrantc>
TFDL: two network cards, one connected to the main network/internet, one connected to your LTSP network. configure your DHCP server to only listen on the LTSP network.
18:04
TFDL: in a two-nic LTSP server, only the server needs internet access, the thin clients just need access to the server.
18:04
<TFDL>
yes, i agree and understand
18:05
before you go, i wonder if you provide paid support?
18:05
i just want to pay back to your for your help.
18:06
i may or may not need your service in the future but if there is a paid service for LTSP i sure want to know?
18:06
or even buy you a few songs on itunes? :)
18:07
i will do what you just told me
18:07
my email dule@ucalgary.ca if you know of a paid support service please let me know.
18:08
Thanks Vagrantc so much for your help!
18:13
<vagrantc>
yes, i'd be happy to do consulting
18:15
<TFDL>
can i have your email?
18:15* vagrantc takes this private
18:15
<vagrantc>
TFDL: i'll email you some contact information :)
18:16
<TFDL>
yes you got mine dule@ucalgary.ca

||cw: Can I change an existing ltsp installation from nbd to nfs? finding guides that all reference files that I don't have...
20:55
<||cw>
I've never tried
20:55
<Zaphoid>
||cw: Ok. I'll figure something out.
20:56
<||cw>
I suspect it won't be trivial though, if it is possible
20:56
btw, did toy disable selinux, or tweak it to allow nbd to work?
20:56
toy/you/
20:56
<Zaphoid>
||cw: Well, I'm not against re-creating it, but I'm not sure what options I can use to make it use NFS vs NBD in the setup scripts in Ubuntu Precise
20:57
<||cw>
I thought you were using centos?
20:57
<Zaphoid>
||cw: I can't find a nbd-server configuration for CentOS 5 at all.
20:57
||cw: Long story. Want Ubuntu guest running on CentOS 5 host
20:57
So I have more troubles ahead of me
20:57
<||cw>
:(
20:58
<Zaphoid>
Running fat client, of course
20:58
<||cw>
getting ltsp5 to work on that old centos will be an issue too. you'd be better off running a newer ubuntu in a vm on it
20:58TFDL has left IRC (TFDL!889fa006@gateway/web/freenode/ip.136.159.160.6, Quit: Page closed)
20:59
<Zaphoid>
||cw: I was thinking that, as well, but I want to exaust other possibilities first.
21:00
I have an existing setup of about 500 CentOS 5 systems in the field, and the least disruptive method will be the best.
21:01
<vagrantc>
recent versions of LTSP allow switching between NBD and NFS pretty easy, but it was a bit more of an ordeal beforre
21:01
<||cw>
but... why
21:01
why not centos 6?
21:01
<Zaphoid>
Because CentOS 6 wasn't a thing when most of these were installed.
21:03
<||cw>
well, 6 has been out for 3 years now, maybe time to plan an upgrade since you seem to want new features
21:04
sorry, 2 years, rhel as about 3
21:04
<Zaphoid>
Hell, CentOS 5 wasn't a thing when most of these were installed. Took 350 site visits to get their hardware and OS upgraded to CentOS 5 4 years back.
21:04
Trying to keep these moving along until 7 comes out.
21:04
<||cw>
:/. I remote update deb based all the time. I'd not do it for centos, and it's one fo the reasons I dislike it so
21:05
<Zaphoid>
We keep them rolling along with the new 5 releases, all are on 5.9 now, but can't do it for major versions. Not to mention our software will all need to be tested.
21:06
Just a matter of resources. The hope is giving them a Modernish GUI with Ubuntu LTS.
21:07
<slackish>
Zaphoid: look at /usr/share/initramfs-tools/{init,scripts/nfs} . That should show you how to get nfsroot going.
21:07

Zaphoid, Is your issue trying to build a fat client to issue to the current CentOS 5 machines, or you want to set up 500 CentOS servers to each serve clients?
21:08
<Zaphoid>
I was hoping to build an image I could distribute to the CentOS systems to run the fat clients
21:08
<bennabiy>
With a CentOS host issuing the client images?
21:08
<Zaphoid>
I have a fat client going on 12.04 now (Well, Mint 13), and am trying to figure out how to host it on a CentOS system
21:08
bennabiy: yes
21:09
<bennabiy>

21:10
<Zaphoid>
Ok. I wouldn't object to it.
21:11
I just gravitate towards LTS naturally

Yes.
