maslak: the distro is served by the server, not the chroot
03:37
Unless you use fat clients, that is...
03:38
So even if you had 5 different chroots, each one from its own distro, the users would still be seeing the server distro
03:44
<maslak>
alkisg : maybe you don't understand what i ment. I want to run ubuntu enviroment as it is now, but want to have some debian-baset thin clients with some speciffic apps (we talked ab. one of those yesterday / today at night) that's what i want to get - my users will be using simple ltsp configuration, but some diskless stations are going to be just for my testing purposes ...

I probably don't :) Could you tell me in bullet style what distros do you need? e.g. (1) ubuntu server (2) ubuntu clients with gui (3) debian clients without gui - or something similar?

<alkisg>
maslak: will you be needing debian GUI on your toy-clients?
03:59
If so, you'd need a second server, as the GUI is offered by the server
03:59
<maslak>
i don't wanna mess up with my working ltsp env.. toy-clients will be console only machines... no connections via X...
04:00
<alkisg>
OK, then yeah, that would work
04:00
<maslak>
but how to make it happen ;P
04:02
<alkisg>
One way that would certainly work would be to build the chroot in a debian server, and then copy it :)

Hello again everybody! I'm completely done with the testing phase for getting LTSP ready for our kiosks here at the Community College I work for. However, we have one small problem. They currently have a unified print server that has a centralized database allowing certain computers access to certain network printers. I have sent an e-mail asking for a detailed account of exactly how the printers are set up, but was wondering: How c
12:55
<alkisg>
mordocai: your sentence was too long and it was cut in "but was wondering: How c"
12:56
<mordocai>
Hmm... the webchat client keeps doing that... i need to remember that it does. Xchat at home doesn't -.-. Anyways, that was "How can I either connect to something like this/replicate it with LTSP kiosks?"

Hello, I was wondering if anyone has seen anyone making the ability to change passwords available from the xdm?
12:59
I am setting up a password policy for my users via an ldap server and would like to make their passwords expire at certain times but if they do not change before that they would be blocked from loging onto their terminals to do so.
13:01
<Lns>
mordocai: it totally depends on how that database is set up and whether Linux can 'talk' to it or not
13:01
<alkisg>
grantk: you mean ldm?
13:01
<grantk>
sorry, ment LDM ,
13:02
<mordocai>
Lns: That's what i figured. Hopefully i'll get an answer soon.
13:02
<grantk>
meant, wow, can not type right now.
13:02
<alkisg>
grantk: this will be done when sbalneav finds some time to reimplement ldm with libssh2
13:03
<grantk>
cool, I was going to be slightly less aggressive to get around this, but I was thinking I might be able to add the option to run a python script to change the password to the options menu
13:03
just been about 5 months since I played with the themes and could not remember if I had seen anything like this.
13:27jhutchins_lt has joined #ltsp

Okay, so apparently they have a windows server that shares all the printers. Then, they use a login script that goes up to a Microsoft SQL database, looks up the computer, finds what printers are supposed to be accessed from that computer, and enables them. I assume this would be possible with a similar script on linux?
13:28
<grantk>
no script needed, you could do that with CUPS
13:29
<mordocai>
Hmm... okay. I'm not familiar with cups beyond just the GUI and adding a local or network printer to my own box... looks like i have some research to do then :)
13:32
Any chance there is a HOWTO relavent to waht i want to do?
13:33
wow, relevent*
13:33
<grantk>
ahh, I doubt it, cups is a bit of a pain in the ass

<grantk>
excuse the language, forgot where I was.
13:34
<mordocai>

13:34
<grantk>
with their latest version per user restriction is really easy
13:34bobby_C has joined #ltsp
13:35
<grantk>
mordocai: are they still going to use windows machines? if so you could probably restrict them using samba as well
13:35
<mordocai>
grantk: Yeah, the kiosks will be the minority in the system. Most will be Windows 7 machines.
13:35
<grantk>
http://www.cups.org/articles.php?L265+THow-To+Q
13:36
mordocai: you could still track the computers in MS sql database and write a script to create your cupsd.conf and schedule a cronjob to update/restart cups.
13:38
<mordocai>
Hmm... okay. The script idea will require the least changes i think... so i'll probably try that. (Even though it's probably not the best solution). The less i have to deal with the windows guys, the better...
13:39
<grantk>

Can anyone point me to an article about using ltsp over wireless?
21:43
<vagrantc>
!wireless
21:43
<ltspbot>
vagrantc: "wireless" :: http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/WirelessLtsp
21:43
<vagrantc>
short answer: forget it
21:43
long answer: it's a good deal of work
21:44
<sweetpi>
I got a 404 on that page
21:45
I didnt really think it would be that bad. If I can bring up the wireless connection from the initrd that is.
21:48
I'm not worried about pxe booting, just booting the kernel and initrd on the client and bring up wireless and mount over nbd.
21:50
vagrantc: Is it a latency issue from wireless that the short answer is "forget it"?
21:52
<vagrantc>
oh, right. that's the old wiki
21:53
<sweetpi>
yeah, I read one article that suggested using a wireless bridge.. I dont really see the advantage other than pxe boot
21:53
<vagrantc>
latency definitely a problem. also that all wireless machines on the same network share bandwidth
21:55
<sweetpi>
Im only aiming for 2-3 laptops, so hopefully it wouldnt be that bad
21:59
I would just try it, but im not sure how to bring the drivers and wpasupplicant into the initrd image
22:01
<vagrantc>
that's the other part of "it's a good deal of work"
