I do not know about 'ssh', but I do know about these similar topics: 'sshd'

sshd: Exposing sshd host keys over NFS is unsafe, so it's disabled by default and !epoptes is recommended instead. If you insist on running sshd in LTSP clients, read https://github.com/ltsp/ltsp/discussions/310#discussioncomment-101549

<bildo>
alkisg That is what I thought... Shame, it was a very easy way to get lightweight apps working on older hardware with no browsing or video.... Thanks anyway!
10:24
<alkisg>
bildo: it's a problem with the internet, not with the software. Graphics isn't about fonts and arcs anymore, like it was in the past; its about youtube videos :)
10:25
So remote xorg isn't suitable anymore; remote desktop is
10:25
bildo: you can still use ltsp with old hardware and then use remote desktop on top of it
10:26
But if the apps are lightweight and no browsing or video is needed, then you can run them directly on the clients, there's no need for anything remote
10:26
(i.e. diskless fat clients, as we call them)
10:27
<bildo>
alkisg: That is very true. In my specific use case it was very handy, I had a bunch of old computer, set up Hexchat with a specific server and just added users, they could use any pc and get the same pesonalised setup
10:27
<alkisg>
bildo: they can still do that, it's what ltsp exists for
10:27
You don't need remote xorg to do that
10:29
<bildo>
alkisg: I have to do some more research on the topic, would you happen to have any resources you could point me to?
10:29
<alkisg>
bildo: just do a typical ltsp installation and test; it takes less than an hour, and most of it is just waiting....
10:30
<bildo>
Ok, thanks
10:30
<alkisg>
https://ltsp.org/docs/installation/
10:30
Follow the "chrootless" part. What hardware do you clients have, do you know the exact CPU and RAM?
10:32
<bildo>
I have an assorted collection of old donated hardware, anything from EEE 701 through Asus i3
10:33
<alkisg>
Eh, that's not old hardware :D
10:33
Anything 64bit with 2+ GB RAM runs fine as fat clients
10:33
So just do a typical e.g. Ubuntu MATE 22.04 installation, then follow the ltsp installation instructions
10:34
<bildo>
Ok, I will try that
10:34
<alkisg>
Ah, if the eee pc is 32bit, then you'll need ubuntu 18.04 32bit instead
10:34
<bildo>
Yes, it is
10:35
I think many of the computers are 32bit
10:35
<alkisg>
OK then download ubuntu mate 18.04.5 and install your server with that one
10:35
(or any recent 32bit debian, if you don't mind the boot time)
10:36
<bildo>
It is starting to become a problem to find a recent Linux distribution that supports 32bit
10:36
Personally, I prefer Debian to Ubuntu
10:38
alkisg: Thanks for you help, it has been illuminating!
10:38
<alkisg>
Last I checked in some old PC, a local debian bullseye needed 2 minutes, and ubuntu 18 needed 1 minute
10:38
<bildo>
That is completely acceptable
10:38
<alkisg>
Go for bookworm 32bit then :)
10:38
<bildo>
in my opininon
10:39
Heh :)
