hello, does anyone know how to get the vnc X module running on ltsp5 (edubuntu) ?
12:03
<Lns>
maxi_: module? Have you looked at iTalc?
12:03
<maxi_>
no... does it use vnc?
12:04
we need vnc because we want the teachers to be able to use vnc from windows
12:04
<Lns>
maxi yes. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuLTSP/iTalc
12:04
maxi_: hrm. maybe not then, dont' have much exp. with italc and plain windows vnc client.
12:05
or italc at all for that matter.. i just like to point people in the right direction ;)
12:05
<maxi_>
ok :-)
12:06
i tried vnc4server's libvnc.so but it seems broken, i also tried x0vncserver but it is very very slow
12:07
<Lns>
maxi_: you're trying to control the TCs right? not the server?
12:07
<maxi_>
yes i do
12:09
<Lns>
yeah..i mean, i don't know why just installing vnc in the chroot wouldn't work. there used to be thin-client-manager but that's pretty outdated
12:14
<maxi_>
i also think it should work, but there is a bug that prevents me from using it: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vnc4/+bug/260815
12:27
<johnny>
thin client manager will not work anymore.. ogra was gonna rip the vnc part out
12:27
and just leave the basic monitoring/shutdown/messaging capabilities
12:27
<ogra>
has ripped :)
12:27
about 8months ago
12:27
<johnny>
oh.. has ripped :)
12:27
<ogra>
before intrepid released
12:28
<johnny>
and it went into intrepid that way?
12:28* johnny hasn't looked in awhile
12:28
<ogra>
yep
12:28
<maxi_>
and is there any recommended way to get vnc working on the clients?
12:29
vnc doesn't depend on the thinclient manager, it is a server program, isn't it?
12:29
<ogra>
italc
12:29
<maxi_>
can i use windows vnc clients with italc?
12:30
<ogra>
no, you can use italc windows client with italc
12:30
it uses vnc internally but doesnt expose a port for normal vnc
12:30
<maxi_>
so italc does not build on vnc, but has its own protocol?
12:30
<ogra>
no
12:30
<maxi_>
ah
12:30
ok
12:30
can i get it to expose a port?
12:31
<ogra>
it exposes a ssl protected port italc clients can connect to
12:31* ogra points to italc.sourceforge.net
12:32
<maxi_>
ok i'll look at it
12:32
does it implement its own vnc server or does it use some other software?

Hello all!
19:53
So I'll ask again: Anyone using FreeNX on a regular basis?
19:54
I've got a Term1520 from diskless workstations and I'm thinking about putting a CF card in it and booting it straight into X running FreeNX to connect to my remote server.
19:55
Over DSL/cablemodem I'm hoping the performance is good enough for email, web browsing, coding, etc.

SDuensin: Cool. Could you actually code, email, browse the web, just as if it were a local machine?
21:58
I might try DSL or Debian netinstall and put freenx on it.
21:58
<SDuensin>
tessier - pretty close
21:59
<tessier>
So hopefully over DSL/cablemodem to a well connected datacenter it will work.
22:01
<SDuensin>
It should be fine. I was really impressed with it.
22:03
I'm going to be integrating it with my LTSP install here somehow. Not got it all worked out yet.
22:04
<loather-work>
yeah, the only problem with NX is that it's based on a relatively old version of X11, and newer applications which are compiled against newer X11 headers have more and more trouble working with NX.
22:04
<SDuensin>
:-(
22:04
So when is someone going to liberate it and create a completely FLOSS implementation?
22:04
<loather-work>
nomachine, even after repeated customer feedback, has little plan to update NX to something reasonably current.
22:05
<SDuensin>
Why should they? It does what they want.
22:06
Is there anything else that compares to it?
22:08
<loather-work>
not really. but as their market share decreases because their product no longer works, people will stop using it
22:09
personally, i absolutely loathe being stuck on old software because package X isn't compatible.
22:11
<vagrantc>
seems like whatever conceptual ideas NX has implemented should be more directly integrated into X.org
22:12
<loather-work>
i wholeheartedly agree
22:12
however, that's nomachine's bread and butter
22:15
<SDuensin>
Still seems to me that you could optimize something simpler like VNC instead of going through all that NX stuff. Using a tile cache and such.
22:18
<vagrantc>
i don't expect nomachine to do it, i am thinking an implementation without any of nomachine's code.
22:18
but doing the sorts of things they're doing
22:20
<SDuensin>
Go for it. Can you get it done by Friday? :-)
22:22* SDuensin needs to read about X. He knows nothing of the protocol.
22:22
<vagrantc>
heh
22:24
<SDuensin>
Seems to me, again knowing nothing of X, that you could cache window contents and extents. Then when you drag or scroll or such, you could pull most of the data from the cache.
22:42
Anybody ever try this? http://www.jcraft.com/jdxpc/index.html
