<krinns>
hi all
00:11
am using ltsp 4.1.1 from last year i have a sun machine with 5 gb RAM
00:11
i have 60 users
00:11
now am getting annoied
00:11
users r complaining abt slowlessness more often
00:11
it takes some time 10 mins to boot a thin clinet
00:12
any idea how i make it faster
00:12
even 60 users is not as much load for sun server
00:13
<vagrantc>
wow. that's even slower than ltsp5! :)
00:14
<krinns>
YA
00:14
really users are saying move us to windows
00:14
vagrant any idea
00:15
i have upgrade to 6 gb ram
00:15
even its slower
00:15
<vagrantc>
well, that sounds like a disk problem or network problem ... especially if it just started to be a problem recently but worked before
00:15
<krinns>
i mean suner poer server would have to support atlest 90+ users
00:15
well previously i have 30 users
00:16
but now my users increse to obviously load increses to thats the point to go for high end server machine
00:16
<vagrantc>
but that really shouldn't significantly increase boot times.
00:16
<krinns>
sure but 10 mins to boot
00:17
daily in earlt morining when most of users came in n boot thier clients
00:17
<vagrantc>
sounds like something is broken or misconfigured.
00:17
<krinns>
thats the scene to see am gettings calls my system not working
00:17
users have to wait to get login
00:18
and even if they login their desktop wont come up
00:18
what should i check its simple configuration though
00:19
<vagrantc>
my gut would say hard drive errors ...
00:20
or incompatible ram timing issues
00:21
also, if at all possible, can you try and get it back down to 30 users just for a day or two to test and make sure it really isn't just overloaded?
00:21
or, just long enough to figure out weather the load is the problem
00:22
the dstat program is also useful to figure out what type of problem is causing the load
00:24
it can show you your disk/net/cpu/swap usage over time, so if somethings always overloaded, you can get an idea what type of resource is the problem
00:27
i should really probably start running tftpd-hpa and dhcp3-server, seeing as those are the defaults for ltsp-server in debian.
00:39
<krinns>
no am using novel linux desktop
00:40
vagrant i have notice one thing
00:40
as i add another 1 gb ram
00:40
<vagrantc>
that last comment was essentially talking to myself
00:40
<krinns>
my cpu utilization is more now
01:09
<mistik1>
vagrantc: what would happen if you ripped perl out of a debain box?
01:09
Would apt, debconf and friends be affected?
01:10
<vagrantc>
i think the current version of debconf is written in perl
01:10
<Bhaskar>
Can i shutdown particular client ? how
01:10
<vagrantc>
so, probably
01:10
<mistik1>
ok
01:10
<Bhaskar>
ogra, Can i shutdown particular client ? how
01:10
<mistik1>
vagrantc: Is building OSes not fun?
01:11
<vagrantc>
mistik1: generally, that's why i like debian. it's already mostly there. :)

Hi. I have a problem with LOCALE_STORAGE. I have an error when turning it on and do not know why. It does not look like a complex option to use and I have found no reference to such a problem on google or LTSP docs.
05:14
Does that option need other options to be set, before ?

<antgel>
hi all, having a terrible time with assigning hostnames via dns - i have grabbed the check_hostname script from http://wiki.ltsp.org/twiki/bin/view/Ltsp/DHCP#Automatically_assigning_hostname and it returns the right answer, but still, in lts.conf, i can only get the workstation configured by mac address or ip address
06:07
also, i was hoping to get printing working with ltsp5 on debian - someone sent me the jetpipe script but i have no idea how to integrate it - any help appreciated
06:08
<sep>
antgel, just install the printer on the server and it works ?
06:09
<antgel>
sep: when i do an nmap on the client, it's not listening on the jetdirect port
06:09
<sep>
i never bother with local printers on thin clients. i use network printers
06:09
<antgel>
not an option here
06:10
<sep>
antgel, i guess you neet to put the script into the chroot.
06:10
and start it when the client boot
06:10
look into the /etc/rcS.d inside the chroot
06:11
<antgel>
sep: with respect, guesses are no good to me today, i'm under intense pressure :)
06:12
my lts.conf is here http://www.pastebin.ca/387478
06:12
<sep>
antgel, sorry then, i'l keep my mounth shut
06:12
<antgel>
sep: really, thanks for trying, and sorry if i appeared rude
06:12
i wish i had time to mess about with the config more
06:12
<sep>
no offence was taken
06:14
i just never mess with such things since they usualy consume more time then it's worth. when a simple printer with a network interfaces does the job so easily
06:15
what ltsp version are you running btw ?
06:15
<antgel>
5, muekow
06:15
<sep>
the packages in etch ?
06:15
<antgel>
yep
06:16
i have PRINTER_0_DEVICE = /dev/usb/lp0 and PRINTER_0_TYPE= U
06:16
but it's not listening on :9100
06:19
<sep>
have yuo ssh'd to the client and tested that usb modules are loaded and that /dev/usb/lp0 works ?
06:20jammcq has quit IRC
06:20
<antgel>
sep: how can i ssh to it? don't know the root password
06:21
in fact, it's not even listening on ssh port
06:21
<sep>
antgel, you have to set the root pw inside the chroot
06:21
you migth have to install the ssh package too
06:21
<antgel>
ah, didn't know that was standard practice
06:21
<sep>
ssh is nice when your troubleshooting, but not neessecary otherways
06:21
<antgel>
i'm very close to downgrading to 4.2 - not sure if printing is supported in muekow/etch
06:21
i have console access
06:22
<sep>
you can wait for vagrantc if you need knowledge
06:22
i only deal in guesswork :]
06:23
<antgel>
heh
06:25
<sep>
atlest then you can try running your script manually
06:25
<antgel>
sep: just checked - /dev/usb/lp0 is present and correct
06:26
<sep>
and can you start the jetpipe script ?
06:33
<antgel>
sep: i don't know where to put the jetpipe script
06:34
<sep>
antgel, you can try with /opt/ltsp/i386/usr/local/sbin
06:34
put it in there
06:34
then you should see it on the client as /usr/local/sbin/...
06:35
<antgel>
sep: i'll have a go
06:40dellin has joined #ltsp
06:43
<antgel>
sep: hmm, manually running jetpipe gets it listening on :9100
06:43
i'll try and set up a network printer
06:44
<sep>
then you can just add /usr/local/sbin/jetpipe in one of the chroot boot scripts
06:44
and it will start on boot
06:51

07:30
<mrchicken>
anybody's looking at the dhcpd.conf I pasted?
07:30
<jammcq>
mrchicken: ok, 2 things. it's still possible that another dhcp server answered, cuz LTSP makes 2 dhcp queries. once from the bootrom, and again after the kernel is loaded. 2nd thing is, are you sure that dhcpd.conf file you sent me is actually the one being used?
07:31
<mrchicken>
jammcq ... I just double checked for other dhcpd... I had one on a BSD box, but I shut it off... and yes thats the one being used
07:31
<antgel>
sep: i don't see how it's any good to start jetpipe from a boot script - i have to hard-code the device and port which means that PRINTER* entries in lts.conf are ignored
07:32
<jammcq>
just double checked, when? just in the last 5 minutes?
07:32

does /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh not get executed in muekow? i have put a line in there to start jetpipe, but when the client boots, ps ax doesn't show it
08:02

antgel, jetpipe gets started from your ltsp-client-stup initscript

<antgel>
ogra: thought that was only in ubuntu, this is debian etch

08:03
oh, right
08:03
<antgel>
ogra: but any way i can get printing working will do me :)
08:03
<ogra>
then you need some more tweaks to the start_printer script
08:04
well, jetpipe /dev/lp0 9100 should theoretically work
08:04
or /dev/usblp0 ... depending on the printer :)
08:04
<antgel>
ogra: does, but i can't get it to start automatically
08:04

jetpipe has no serial support yet
08:04

debian has probs with the non existent lp_server license

your root-path is specifying /opt/ltsp-4.2/i386, but your /etc/exports file is exporting /opt/ltsp
08:42
<mrchicken>
but I 777d it
08:42
<jammcq>
that's NOT the problem
08:43
the problem is, the /etc/exports file controls what directories can be mounted via NFS, and /opt/ltsp-4.2 ISN'T ONE OF THEM
08:44
<ogra>
jammcq, doesnt 4.2 set the entry in /etc/exports ?
08:44
<jammcq>
yes, it's supposed to
08:44* ogra wonders if there is muecow involved anywhere

not very

heh.
09:46

but i started a lot of stuff for feisty+1 which is still in development ... like new ldm ith cairo support
09:46
(lots faster)
09:46
<vagrantc>
ah, that's good.
09:47
when i've paid attention to the boot speed, the majority of the slowness seems to be ldm.
09:47
<ogra>
yep
09:48
also svg is a lot less mem hungry
09:48
<vagrantc>
excellent.
09:48

oh, and indeed python-ltsp is in feisty

10:21
<jammcq>
cliebow: that's a question for ogra
10:21
<ogra>
cliebow, ltsp-update-kernels should ...
10:21
<cliebow>
k
10:21
<ogra>
which is run by ltsp-build-client as last command
10:21
so yes, it should
10:21
unles you do cross arch stuff
10:22
<vagrantc>
well, even if you do cross arch stuff
10:23mrchicken has quit IRC
10:23
<ogra>
then you run ltsp-build-client on the client arch ...
10:23
<vagrantc>
ah, yes. but ltsp-update-kernels will still copy the kernels and such
10:23
<ogra>
so ltsp-update-kernels wont run on the server and you need to run it manually
10:24
<vagrantc>
i really wish i had finished my ltsp-update-kernels patches in time for etch so that you almost never need to run ltsp-update-kernels
10:24
i think it works, but i haven't tested it much, as other issues took priority
10:24
<ogra>
well, there is always etch+1 :)
10:25
<vagrantc>
ogra: not neccesarily... :)
10:25
<ogra>
heh
10:25
<vagrantc>
this is the point in the debian release cycle where ... things are very frustrating
10:26
its close enough to release i dont want to break anything, and yet... gah. its stalled.
10:27
<jammcq>
ogra: if ltsp-update-kernels only copies files, why can't it run cross-architecture?
10:27
<ogra>
yeah
10:27
jammcq, it can
10:28* jammcq must be confused
10:28
<ogra>
the prob is that yu nfs mount /opt/ltsp from the server to the client to run ltsp-build-client
10:28
so you dont have access to /var/lib/tftpboot ...
10:28
<jammcq>
ah
10:29
<ogra>
if you export both and mount both rw it will work
10:29
but usualy you have a tarball or something ... so you need to run the copying command after untarring

<Davo_Dinkum>
Which would be better for an ltsp server: a Pentium III 800Mhz or a Celeron 1.1Ghz?
22:21
<jammcq>
the most important thing is how much ram in the server
22:22
<Davo_Dinkum>
i know, but, P3 or cel?
22:22
<jammcq>
after that, i'd check the bus speed on the motherboard
22:22
<Davo_Dinkum>
They're probably both 13Mhz
22:22
133
22:23
<jammcq>
hmm, they'd probably perform about the same
22:31
<Lumiere>
I'd say the PIII
22:31
it probably has more L2 Cache
22:31
which is what would make the difference between the 2
22:34
<Davo_Dinkum>
Yeah I was thinking that
22:38
800Mhz PIIIs have a 256k L2 cache
22:39
<vagrantc>
sbalneav, jammcq : sooooo.... why not put them in /opt/ltsp/ubuntu-feisty-i386 and /opt/ltsp/debian-etch-i386 and put things into $TFTPDIR/ltsp/ubuntu-feisty-i386 and $TFTPDIR/ltsp/debian-etch-i386 ... ?
22:39
that would be more similar to how the ltsp-update-kernels works on ubuntu and debian
22:40
<jammcq>
vagrantc: that's zackly what I was thinking
22:40
<vagrantc>
jammcq: including a sub-dir in the tftpdir...
22:41
<jammcq>
yepper
22:41
<vagrantc>
why do you need a different script at all?
22:41
<Davo_Dinkum>
The celeron has a 100Mhz FSB I think
22:41
<jammcq>
does the script already do that?
22:41
<vagrantc>
yes.
22:41
<jammcq>
well then, maybe it's ok
22:42
<vagrantc>
well, the one in debian and ubuntu, anyways.
22:43
it basically copies /opt/ltsp/*/boot/ to /var/lib/tftpboot/*
22:43
<jammcq>
I'll test it in a bit
22:43
<vagrantc>
with /opt/ltsp and /var/lib/tftpboot being variabalized
22:43
<jammcq>
watching a movie right now
22:43
<vagrantc>
watch away, i've got to do dishes :)
22:44
<jammcq>
for file in $CHROOT/boot/vmlinu* $CHROOT/boot/initrd.img* $CHROOT/bo
22:44
if [ -f "$file" ]; then
22:44
cp -a -v "$file" $TFTP_CHROOT
22:44
umm, that' ain't gonna do it
22:45
<Davo_Dinkum>
Tualatin-256 Celerons can be easily overclocked it seems.
22:45
<vagrantc>
jammcq: that is like so last year
22:45
<jammcq>
that's from edgy. I'll grab the one from feisty and see if it's better
22:47
if [ "$COPYTFTP" = "true" ]; then
22:47
mkdir -p $TFTPBOOT/$CHROOT_NAME
22:47
cp -a -v $CHROOT/boot/. $TFTPBOOT/$CHROOT_NAME/
22:47
fi
22:47* vagrantc wonders what kind of movie jammcq is watching that involves perusing code
22:47
<jammcq>
heh
22:48
the Client
22:48
not Thin Client :)
22:48
<vagrantc>
heh
